BUSH TELE LETTERSDear BT,RE: the Game and Feral Animal Control Act2002 TBTW 28/2/13Feral pests and animals do great harm to ourfauna.Last year, NPWS removed over 54,000 feralanimals including pigs, dogs, cats, foxes, deerand goats from our national parks and reserves. This work was undertaken by NPWS rangers withthe assistance of contracted shooters. This existing program will now be extended byinviting restricted licensed shooters to assist withpest eradication and control in 79 out of 799 parksand reserves across the State. Similar programshave operated in Victoria and South Australia formany years.Only those persons who hold a restricted gamelicence will be permitted to help remove feralanimals from our national parks. Under nocircumstances will this program operate in anymetropolitan, wilderness or World Heritage area. This new program will commence later in 2013under strict conditions mandated by the Ministerfor the Environment.Further information in relation to how the programwill operate in individual parks will be available inthe lead up to the commencement of the program- www.environment.nsw.gov.au.This is a responsible conservation program thatwill build on existing pest eradication programs inour national parks.Barry O’Farrell MP, PremierDear BT,Imagine my shock (being a new rabbit owner)when I heard about the imminent release of thecontroversial Calici virus into public areas, whichwas due to happen on 1st March!vet. It was suggested that I have my rabbitvaccinated for $96. The intentional release ofthe virus is intended to kill off the wild rabbits butunfortunately can be transmitted to pet rabbitsby “biting insect, inhalation, or contact with aninfected rabbit”. Death is usually 30-40 hours aftercontracting the virus.I understand the need to reduce feral rabbits butdoing it with a virus that was accidently releasedfrom a South Australian island in 1995 surerings alarm bells for me. In an article I found, itsays that the vaccine for the Calici virus has notreduced the incidence of the disease. This couldmean the vaccine does not work, or the vaccinewas given to animals that were not at risk anyway.Fox baiting is in sign-posted areas where localswalk their dogs, so if you keep your dog awayfrom those areas you’re pretty safe. However, theCalici virus, is spread by biting insects and in onearticle I found, this offers an answer for how thevirus accidently escaped the quarantine island inmethods!) may be to blame. And also reading upon more info, I see there is a Feline Calici virus aswell. Mmmm … wonder how that happened??Then again, in yet another googled article, I amreminded that the myxomatosis disease is still outand about. However, this disease does not seemto have a vaccine so it is recommended that youscreen your rabbit hutch to avoid biting insectsand contact with wild rabbits. I have found that thevirus can live on clothing (in the right conditions)for one month.Any further information others may know aboutthis issue may make for some interesting reading.(Name withheld) Rabbit owner, BerowraProudly sponsored byBEROWRA RSL CLUBwww.clubberowra.comph: 9456 1844reception@clubberowra.comTHURS 7 TH MARCHThe Bush Telegraph WeeklyOUT TODAY!Hawkesbury River Writers (www.hrw.org.au) meet at 7pm at the Club in Kowan Rd,Mooney Mooney. BUSH TELE LETTERSDear BT,I would like to thank Ray Hadley at 2GBand to commend him on his communitymental health. Ray and Chris Smith haveI ring Chris Smith on the open-line at 2GBto discuss many matters which happen inour community.Sean & Kerrie McArdle, Berowra HtsDear BT,I wish to publically convey my thanks tothe doctors, nurses and all levels of staffat Hornsby-Kuring-gai Hospital.Recently I needed major surgery and hadto spend 7 days in hospital.I was so impressed with the quality ofcare and the friendliness of the staff. At all times I received attentive andprofessional care.Hornsby Kuring-gai Hospital provided mewith world class service and support.David Gillan, Mt. Kuring-gaiDear BT,It appears people have different attitudesto nature strips. These are actually ownedby council but generally maintained by theoccupants of the premises they adjoin. Most people in my neighbourhood takecare of their nature strips, sometimesincluding gutters which get clogged withleaves and bark. (When the councilsweeper hasn’t been around.)It concerns me that some nature strips areleft unkempt and weeds are left to seed. Some seeds end up in storm water (whichdrains to Berowra Creek as the stencilson the gutters inform us) and germinatein our bushland which is bad for ourenvironment. At the same time there aregenerous people who go out of their wayto help those who are physically unable tocare for their nature strip. It is great that most people have a senseof pride in caring for our wonderfulbushland suburbs.Paula Geraghty, Mount ColahDear BT,Land in Berowra Hts is currently beingcleared so that 2 x two storey buildingscan be erected. This will affect 10 homesand due to State Legislation, no Councilapproval is required which means thatthese 10 home owners have no say inthis development. We had a meeting with Council on 23rdFebruary at the block and were told thereis nothing they can do. We contacted aTown Planner who advised that our onlycourse of action would be to take this tocourt which would cost about $50,000and we had little chance of winning. We have no problem with single storeydwellings on this property; everyone hasa right to build on their land, but not toinform the neighbours of their plans dueto State Legislation is a sorry state ofaffairs. This will adversely affect the valueof our homes, sunlight and privacy due todouble storey buildings.Come on Matt Kean MP, have a look atthis State Legislation before Berowrabecomes a concrete jungle.Berowra concerned residentCLUB NEWSOn the 16th February we ran thefor many years. This was a fantastic success forthe club with many kids from allover the shire attending. DON’T TURN ABLIND EYE TO YOURFAMILY MEDICAL HISTORYIn the lead up to this year’s World Glaucoma Week, 10-16 March,Specsavers Hornsby optometrist and co-owner Roland Tan is urgingresidents to talk about their family medical history.“First degree relatives of glaucoma patients have an 8-fold increasedrisk of developing the disease, so it’s important we know the conditionsour family members have been diagnosed with so that we’re not caughtunawares,” Mr Tan said.Alarmingly, 50% of people with glaucoma in Australia are currentlyundiagnosed [i] .“Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, and isknown as the ‘sneak thief of sight’ because it has very few symptoms untilthe condition is advanced,” he added. “If glaucoma goes undetected it cangradually destroy your eyesight, leaving you blind.”Mr Tan reminds the community that simply talking about your family’smedical history and having a regular eye test could save your sight:“Over 300,000 Australians have glaucoma and whilst it is more commonas people get older, it can occur at any age. If caught early, appropriatetreatment can prevent further deterioration to sight, but we cannot undodamage once it has occurred.“Knowing your family medical history will help you and your healthproviders make a more informed decision about prevention and screeningfor a range of conditions and ensure you are able to keep avoidableconditions at bay.”Specsavers recommends everyone, particularlythose over the age of 40 or with family history ofeye conditions includingglaucoma, have acomprehensive eye testevery two years[i]http://www.glaucoma.org.au/ fun rides market stalls kids kornercars junior area international food stallsgames emergency services & more!THOMSON LANDSCAPE& GARDEN SUPPLIES P/LAlso trading as BEROWRA SAND & SOILONLY SITUATED AT44 BEAUMONT RD, MT KURING-GAIHUGE SAVINGS ON . . .Pavers & Masonry Retaining Walls (C&M, Boral,Austral, Erosion Control Stone Masonry, PGH, Hanson.)Treated pine sleepers, Logs & LatticeWater tanks in stockLarge selection of Mulches availableFirewood, sand, soils and composts, landscape& building supplies and much moreMON - FRI - 7 - 5SAT - 7 - 3SUN - 8 - 129457 8016OPEN8The Bush Telegraph Weekly – Thursday 7 March 2013

This is expected tobecome one in every three as mostAustralian homes were protectedfrom termites whenthey were built but they may notbe now. This may come as a shock but let meexplain the dynamics. The high risk areas for termites are those homes close to bushland and thosewith high tree density. The suburbs of the Hawkesbury are at extremely highrisk. The old chemical protection systems used in houses built between the late1950’s and 1995 where chemicals known as Organic Chlorides. They werebanned in 1995 due to their environmental impact, but they did have along life expectancy of up to 30 years. Those chemicals are now breakingdown and their effectiveness is beginning to wear off leaving older homesunprotected. The new chemical barrier products are less toxic for the environment but onlylast up to 10 years and require reapplication.Because of the effectiveness of the organic chlorides a whole generation ofhomeowners never had to give a second thought to the dangers of termitesto their home and gain the knowledge of how to reduce the risk of termiteinfestation. Knowledge is the best weapon in the war on termites.Brad Iranzadi is the author of Termite Tutorials a website dedicated toinforming home owners on the protection and treatment options in the war ontermites.FIND OUT HOW TO WIN THE WAR ON TERMITES:www.termitetutorials.com or call Bradon 9454 7774NEED A SOLICITOR?look no further!ADAM DARKES O L I C I T O RCOLLINS & THOMPSONS O L I C I T O R SOffering friendly and professional service9476 27888 CORONATION STREET, HORNSBYS O L I C I T O R SHOME VISITS BEROWRA, BEROWRA HTS,MOUNT COLAH & MT KURING-GAICONVEYANCING SERVICE - BUYING & SELLING PROPERTYCONVEYANCING - REFINANCING OF PROPERTYPOWERS OF ATTORNEYLEASES WILLS - USUALLY $120PROBATE APPLICATIONSROBERT NAPOLI & CO.9456 14960407 499 931Deceased Estates, Wills, Powers of Attorney & Guardianship AppointmentsSale and Purchase of Homes, Businesses, Commercial & Industrial PropertiesLeasing of Shops & FactoriesFamily Law/De Facto Property Settlements, PreNuptial & Domestic Relationship AgreementsEmployment LawSuite 24, Level 1 The Madison25-29 Hunter Street HORNSBY9477 5077The Bush Telegraph Weekly – Thursday 7 March 2013 11

It is atransition to a different learning environment where a child’s resilienceand self-help skills are important assets in supporting confidence.Research confirms that children who have had the opportunity toaccess a quality early childhood education programme have a greaterchance of a positive start to school life and the impact a quality earlychildhood programme has on learning outcomes is seen to be longlasting. Research in recent years also provides greater understandingof the important brain development that occurs during the early yearsand that this is a pivotal time in a child’s life.At Mt Colah Preschool Kindergarten the qualified and talentedEducators understand the importance of a successful transition toschool, which results in children who like school and who show steadygrowth in academic and social skills. PricelessPearlsBy Ralph EstherbyWHAT WAS THAT???It started with a low growl which almost soundedlike a yawn and was quickly followed by a largecracking sound as the 30 metre tall tree in myneighbour’s garden decided it wanted to behorizontal rather than vertical. As it fell, it demolished a fence line and cameto rest against my neighbour’s garage. Its rootscompletely lifted my fence and rose garden – butit was amazing that it did not do more damage.Everyone was thankful that no-one was hurt.It could have easily been much worse – forinstance, if the tree had fallen the other wayit certainly would have demolished my houseand who knows what could have been theoutcome? When it happened we all rushed outside butit was pretty clear that there was not a lot thatcould be done in the wind and the rain. Soafter the adrenalin wore off we went back tobed and listened to the wind and the rain as itcontinued to buffet the house. The light of daymade the carnage more real and again wewere thankful that it was not much worse. This last week we have had visits from the SES,the Fire Brigade and Arborists and they havestarted the clean up work. Soon will come thefencing contractors and in a couple of weeksI am sure that this will become nothing morethan a memory of a turbulent time.Upheaval comes in a lot of forms and oftenwhen you are least expecting it: Marriageswhich seemed secure can be uprooted;Careers which brought you satisfaction cancome to an abrupt end; Health issues cancompletely change the way you live your life;Financial limitations can force you to have todownsize or even move; Pressures and stresscan invade your life and challenge your mentalhealth – and any one of these is worse than atree falling in your front garden.Often when things go wrong I know that it is upto me to fix them but this was different – therewas no way I could fix this – it needed expertswith heavy machinery to achieve the task andso they got on and did it and I am so thankfulfor their assistance. So in the midst of your troubles don’t forget tolet others help but also don’t forget the Lordwho watches over you… “This poor man criedout, and the LORD heard him, And saved himout of all his troubles.” ..Psalms 34:6DO YOU HAVE A COMMENT OR AQUESTION?ralph.estherby@gmail.com‘Breakthrough Church’, meets at9.30am Sundays at the Performing ArtsCentre (Old Bowling Club) - EdgeworthDavid Ave Hornsby - 9477 7222For theLoveof BeautyREMOVEUNSIGHTLY DARKPIGMENT SPOTSRegardless of where they are -face, chest, arms, legs. The procedure is quick &painless amazing results thatcan last years. We have a solution for yourconcerns: We treat skinirregularites.Call for free consultation.www.fortheloveofbeauty.com.auFOR THE LOVE OF BEAUTY9476 6090Does your childhave difficultywith talking orunderstanding?Children with speech or languagehelp children reach their potential bothspecialises in helping children agedand understanding, using words andis also experienced in supportingPh: 0405 388 274www.smalltalkspeech.com.Mel’s Hair & BeautySpecialising in all areas ofHAIR AND BEAUTYEARS, NOSE & NAVEL PIERCING9456 2188Shop 10, Berowra Village, Turner RoadACUPUNCTURE &HERBAL CLINICWilliam Zhang Yu HuiAcupuncturist & HerbalistGraduated in TCM (Uni Guang Zhou)Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine (UTS)460 Pacific Hwy ASQUITHPh/fax: 9987 2938HEEL PAIN“It is not necessary toput up with HEEL PAIN,”says Mrs ChardPODIATRIST.There are several causes of heelpain, the most common beingPLANTAR FASCIITISPlantar Fasciitis is simply inflammationof the big strong band on the bottomof the foot (the plantar fascia).Symptoms usually begin as a ‘stonebruise’ type of pain, increasing tochronic pain, especially first thing inthe morning or after rest. This kind of pain is easily treated byrealigning the foot and leg, whichreduces the trauma, allowing theinjured foot to repair.FOR AN APPOINTMENT CALL9482 2227.519 Pacific Hwy.
