But as a Medicaid recipient since 2004, her voice is a mere muffle in Olympia, where legislators aregrappling with cuts to services for people like her who are elderly and low income.Older Washingtonians and diverse populations, hit disproportionately by state budget cuts, will see further reductions inaid as lawmakers contend with a budget gap estimated at $5 billion. At Nikkei Concerns, the impact is significant. 69% of residents at Keiro and10% at Nikkei Manor are on Medicaid.I n s i d e T h i s I s s u e“We are looking at up to a $600,000 shortfall,” reports CEO Jeffrey Hattori, “butwe are doing all we can to preserve the services imperative to the well-being andState Budget CutsCalendar of Events13quality of life of our residents.”Nikkei Concerns puts people first. We have made tremendous progress, but this year will have its own challenges. We are entering intowhat could be the toughest financial environment this organization has faced, with State and Federal cutbacks making analready hard economic situation much harder.Several former Board members passed away last year — Hideko Shimomura (1980-1999), Bill Nishimura (1993-2007), Robert Mizukami (1988-2007), Nibs Morio (1995), and Akiko Yamanouchi Reh (2000-2002).I would like to thank two Board members who are transitioning off the Board:- Sharon Sobie Seymour joined the Board in 2005 and served as co-chair of our 35th Anniversary Celebration.- Joe Yabuki joined the Board in 1998 and served as President 2000-01. He also presided over a CEO transition and the30th Anniversary event.Serving on this Board takes great dedication and commitment, and I appreciate both Sharon’s and Joe’s hard work, precious time and leadership through the years. I wish them the best for the future but will leave the door ajar shouldeither want to return.I would like to welcome Julie Ann Oiye and Jan Tsutsumoto Gokami, our newest Board members. Julie Ann is a dedicatedand long-time volunteer of the Ayame Kai Guild, our auxiliary group. Jan co-chaired the 35th Anniversary Celebration withSharon and has strongly supported all of our events. We have been fortunate to have such strong support from our community over the years; support the Board will nevertake for granted and will always strive to keep.Sincerely,David HayasakaBoard PresidentDear Friends,“Protect our People!” This drove our plans and actions as 2011 began with the very sobering prospect of up to a$600,000 shortfall in Medicaid reimbursements from Washington State. Our commitment is to ensure “our people”— meaning residents and staff — do not experience anything different with respect to quality of life, care andcompensation and benefits. We are all experiencing the pain of the current economy, and I do not envy the Governor or the legislature as they havevery difficult decisions to make. For our part, we scrutinize every aspect of our budget, increase our level of productivityand efficiency, and explore fundraising options (through grants, planned giving, and online giving) to help ease theburden. Each and every gift, whether monetary, in-kind or through volunteer hours, make a huge difference. With a combinationof expense reduction and the collective generosity of the community, we will provide residents with the special touchesthat make Keiro their home.I’m reminded of the incredible community response to the challenges of creating Seattle Keiro over 35 years ago. We areturning every stone to ensure “our people” feel anshin (peace of mind). Together with the on-going work of the staff atNikkei Concerns, I am confident we will effectively manage these difficult times with you… our community. We are not standing still. Please know that if I am giving 100% today, I will find a way to give 120%… and I am morethan happy to do so. Ganbarimasu!!!With gratitude,Jeffrey Hattori, CEO2 o TAYORI Winter 2011

State Budget Cuts Impact on Nikkei Concerns Continued from page 1“If I were not here I would be in a cemetery,” Numoto bluntly admits. But it is a stark realityfor many.According to an AARP report, seniors spend on average 300 percent more for healthcarethan consumers aged 18-44. Factor in language and cultural barriers and you can imaginethe difficulty and stress on our elderly to find information, services and healthcare designedspecifically for them.Numoto’s Medicaid reimbursements will drop this year by $25 per day. What’s left fromher pension and disability is a mere $58/month to cover co-pays for medications, andout-of-pocket costs for basics like clothes, slippers, eyeglasses and hearing aids. But being at Keiro, Numoto says she has“anshin,” or peace of mind — a feelingno one can put a price on.Nikkei Concerns is collaborating withother agencies on legislative campaigns. In the meantime, seniors, like Numoto, need the community to speak up on theirbehalf by asking legislators to avoid cutsaffecting those most vulnerable. Furtherreductions to prescription medicationco-pays, adult day care, nursing homes, and assisted-living facilities could affectthe economic security of our communitiesand our state, and will end up costingeveryone more in acute health care inthe long term.JuneAyame Kai Steak DinnerSaturday, June 4,5:00-9:00 p.m.Seattle BetsuinSEPTC a l e n d a r o f E v e n t s10th Annual Founders’Golf BenefitFriday, September 211:00 a.m.-9 p.m.Rainier Golf &Country ClubHow you can help:VolunteerContact Megumi Sherrill206.726.7830, msherrill@nikkeiconcerns.orgLend support to elder health agenciesAging Services - www.agingwa.orgWashington Healthcare Association –www.whca.orgDonate to Nikkei Concerns1601 E. She loved theresidents, and her fluency in both Korean and Japanese helped her to converse with and entertainthem. It was her honor to serve the residents, and Chou-san was deeply thankful for the opportunity.Chou-san expressed her gratitude through her famous kim chee. She mixed her love and care into hersecret recipe, and it was in demand every year at the Ayame Kai Holiday Craft Fair. Last fall, shortlyFu-chin Chou before surgery, Chou-san prepared 22.5 gallons of kim chee at home, to make sure that there wasenough to sell at the Ayame Kai Holiday Craft Fair. From her hospital bed, she couldn’t relax until she knew everything wasfine, asking, “How was the kim chee, did we get it bottled up, and how did it sell?”Over the years, sales of her kim chee generated over $10,000 for the Guild and the residents. This was her “small” wayof returning the kindness shown to her at Seattle Keiro.Chou-san peacefully passed away last December and will be remembered for her kindness, compassion, dedication, andher love to serve others. She will be sorely missed.~ Lillian Hayashi, Chair, Bakery/Food Department - Ayame Kai Guild
