THE TOURBILLON <strong>RM</strong> <strong>27</strong>-<strong>01</strong> RAFAEL NADAL WATCHThe partnership betwe<strong>en</strong> Rafael Nadal and Richard Mille has led to a string of successes, on the courts forthe Majorcan t<strong>en</strong>nis champion, notably with his 7 th successive victory at the Fr<strong>en</strong>ch Op<strong>en</strong> in 2<strong>01</strong>2, and in thewatchmaking sphere for Richard Mille, with the Tourbillon <strong>RM</strong> 0<strong>27</strong> Rafael Nadal timepiece, r<strong>en</strong>owned for itsextreme lightness, or the Chronofiable ® certified <strong>RM</strong> 035 Rafael Nadal, which can resist accelerations of over5,000 G without detrim<strong>en</strong>t to any aspect of its performance.In 2<strong>01</strong>3, Richard Mille will pres<strong>en</strong>t the Tourbillon <strong>RM</strong> <strong>27</strong>-<strong>01</strong> also designed in collaboration with Rafael Nadal. Anexceptional creation, it pushes the concepts of lightness and str<strong>en</strong>gth to the ultimate extreme.The caliber <strong>RM</strong><strong>27</strong>-<strong>01</strong> is a triumph of <strong>en</strong>gineering and technology. Its complex, original architecture is the resultof Richard Mille’s determination to create a movem<strong>en</strong>t held in total susp<strong>en</strong>sion in the heart of its case. Inspiredby susp<strong>en</strong>ded civil <strong>en</strong>gineering infrastructures, Richard Mille wanted to adapt these modes of constructionto the watchmaking sphere, occupying a space of just a few t<strong>en</strong>s of millimetres. After many months ofdevelopm<strong>en</strong>t, Richard Mille’s movem<strong>en</strong>t <strong>en</strong>gineers gave tangible form to this avant-garde concept, positioningit indisputably as one of the most innovative architectural constructions of rec<strong>en</strong>t years.The <strong>RM</strong> <strong>27</strong>-<strong>01</strong> Rafael Nadal has a baseplate attached to the case by four braided steel cables just 0.35 mmin diameter. This structure combines str<strong>en</strong>gth and flexibility to protect the movem<strong>en</strong>t, which weighs just 3.5grammes, thanks to the use of grade 5 titanium for the baseplate and tourbillon carriage, and of aluminiumlithiumfor the barrel bridges and gear-trains.These cables are held taut by means of an ing<strong>en</strong>ious mechanism of t<strong>en</strong>sioners (located at 3 and 9 o’clock)and pulleys, which act like pylons positioned at the four corners of the movem<strong>en</strong>t. Each cable is fixed to thet<strong>en</strong>sioner, and passes over the upper pulley and into the movem<strong>en</strong>t, before returning via the lower pulley tofinish in the lower flange. Once the watchmaker has threaded the cables, he t<strong>en</strong>sions them by rotating thec<strong>en</strong>tral t<strong>en</strong>sioner ring with a special tool.The installation and t<strong>en</strong>sioning of the cables are extremely delicate operations. Excessive t<strong>en</strong>sion could breakthe cables and attachm<strong>en</strong>ts at any time and damage the movem<strong>en</strong>t, while insuffici<strong>en</strong>t t<strong>en</strong>sion could put themovem<strong>en</strong>t into a resonance phase, disturbing its chronometric performance.Designed to stay in susp<strong>en</strong>sion inside its case, this exceptional caliber can withstand accelerations of over5,000 G.The <strong>RM</strong> <strong>27</strong>-<strong>01</strong> weighs just 19 grammes, Velcro ® strap included. This feat was made possible by the materialselected for the case. Carbon has the place of honour in the composition of the <strong>RM</strong> <strong>27</strong>-<strong>01</strong>’s case, which featuresa monobloc back. Its anthracite colour is due to the high conc<strong>en</strong>tration of carbon nanotubes. The result: perfectresistance to shocks and scratches, and the comfort that is vital to Rafael Nadal during his tournam<strong>en</strong>ts, all ofwhich he now plays with an <strong>RM</strong> <strong>27</strong>-<strong>01</strong> on his wrist.The <strong>RM</strong> <strong>27</strong>-<strong>01</strong>, available in carbon nanotubes and supplied on a Velcro ® strap, is available in a limited edition of50 timepieces.
