PAGE 12 GAZETTE MARCH 25, 2010Review by Haley PriceThe animated movieHow to Train YourDragon is predictablebut enjoyable. The story aboutwild fire-breathing dragons isbased on the book by CressidaCowell and takes placein the Viking era. Almost everyday dragons come and steallivestock and terrorize thepeople. Most of the village onthe Island of Berk is full of largeVikings, except for Hiccup(voiced by Jay Baruchel); he’sa scrawny, timid teenager.Hiccup intends to train thevillagers not to kill the dragonsbut deal with them so theywon’t take all the food. Butnobody believes him becausehe always aims too high so nobodyin the village thinks muchof him. Neither does his father,Stoick the Vast (voiced by GerardButler), who also happensto be the tribe’s Chief. When Hiccup goes in searchto kill one of the Night Furydragons – one of the worstkind – something happensinside Hiccup. He discoversthat the Night Fury is missinga part of his back wing, soHiccup makes it a fake one. Atthe same time Hiccup is finallyadmitted into dragon trainingschool. He now has mixedemotions because he’s alwayswanted to gain favor with thevillagers by being a bravedragon killer like his dad.Meanwhile Hiccup has adventureswith his friends Astrid(voiced by America Ferrera),Snotlout (voiced by JonahHill), Fishlegs (voiced by ChristopherMintzplasse), and twinsRuffnut (voiced by KristenWiig) and Tuffnut (voiced by— AT THE MOVIES —‘How To Train Your Dragon’ is a great movie for the entire familyHow to Train Your DragonStudio: Paramount PicturesGazette Rating: A-MPAA: “PG” for sequencesof intense actionand some scaryimages, and brief mildlanguage.Who Should Go: Familiesand kids of all ages.Ruffnut, Tuffnut, Astrid and Snotlout look on in awe as Hiccup calms a savage beast in dragon training. Hiccup has to hide thathe knows the dragons’ weaknesseslike that they don’tlike eels, and that when youscratch them underneath thechin, they pass out. It’s onlywhen Hiccup takes Astrid tomeet Toothless, the Night Furydragon, that she begins to seewhat Hiccup is really about. This is a fun, family movieand isn’t too scary for little kids.It has some really good messagesabout judgment. The 3Delements were incredible, andthe animation and special effectsamazing. The backgroundsounds and music were alsovery cool. MARCH 25, 2010 GAZETTE PAGE 13— AT THE MOVIES —‘Repo Men’ is a bizarre and brutal taleReview by Diana SaengerAnyone who thinksthe ongoing debacleabout the health carebill is tedious and implausibleshould get a load of the plot inRepo Men. Set 20 years in ourfuture and adapted from EricGarcia’s The RepossessionMambo, body parts are now amajor business. It’s a dark andbleak world, and everyoneneeds new body parts as theyage. Money is no problem, for“The Union” is happy to negotiatea payment schedule.Repo MenStudio: UniversalPicturesGazette Rating: DMPAA: “R” for strongbloody violence, grislyimages, language andsome sexuality/nudity.Who Should Go: Anyonewanting to avoid rootcanal surgery.Unfortunately, few peoplehave jobs in the society depictedhere, so when their bodypart is scanned by one of theUnion repo men, they are usuallypast their due date on payments. The Union men eitherget the money immediately orwhip out a knife and removethe part to take back to thecompany for sale again.Remy (Jude Law) and Jake(Forest Whitaker) are two of thecompany’s repo men. They’rerecognizable by a companytattoo on their neck. Theytackle each job with the gustoof removing a carburetor froma car. Little focus is placed onJake’s personal life, but Remy’slife fuels much of the plot. He’s happily married to Carol(Carice van Houten), until shedemands Remy stops being arepo man. He tries switchingjobs in the company, but sellingbody parts is not as exciting asretrieving them so he doesn’tmake the switch. When Caroltakes their son Peter (ChandlerCanterbury) and leaves, Remyfeels devastated. While attempting to reclaim aheart from a musician (rapperRZA), Remy gets zapped by afaulty piece of equipment. Hewakes up in the hospital to discoverhe’s now a bonafide customerof The Union. He doesn’teven get a break on the price forhis new heart and wonders howhe will pay for it.A satire way too gruesome,Repo Men is absolutely repulsiveto me. Every few minutesthroughout the film bodies arebeing ripped apart as the repomen bring in the defaultedloot. It’s also preposterous. Forexample, in one scene Remybecomes a one-man killing machineand slashes and stabs aslew of men trying to stop himfrom getting into the top secretsection of the company. The story goes from bad toworse when Remy becomesthe one being chased – alongwith his new gal Beth (AliceBraga), a miserable ex-nightclubsinger who has few of herown body parts left. I don’tknow why seasoned actorssuch as Whitaker or Law wouldwant to appear in a movielike this, but Law explains hismotivation as follows: “I likedthe dark humor mixed with alove story, a buddy movie andsatire, and the challenge thatJude Law and Forest Whitaker star in Repo Men. Photo Credit: Kerry Hayes / UniversalPicturesjuggling all those tones presentedto me as an actor.”Liev Schreiber plays Frank, the heartless and greedy managerof The Union. He’s perfectas the cold, manipulative eyeon-the-prizesupervisor whodoesn’t have a bit of sympathyfor his best repo man.Repo Men comes acrossas a brutal chase, conquerand kill movie. It’s a film withcharacters we care nothingabout because they are callouspeople with no morals orcompassion.

At the sametime your children probably do not want you overcome bygrief. Every person is different; I cannot tell you how long yourperiod of mourning should be.The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 3:1-4, “To everything thereis a season, a time for every purpose under heaven: a timeto be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time topluck up what is planted; a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up, a time to weep, and a time to laugh;a time to mourn, and a time to dance.”You will always, forever feel something special in your heart, the two have become ONE! God is able to bring healing, andcomfort to your heart. One day you will see your love againin eternity. But while you are on earth, enjoy life to the fullest, for our time is short. You never know if God has someone else that you can onceagain share your heart with. Smile, it is better to have lovedthan never loved at all. He alsothrew 7 touchdown passes forthe blue and gold.Tomlinson said, “It is sad forme, but I’m definitely excitedabout the future.” He thankedthe fans, the organization, thecity, and his family in an emotional, touching speech thatonly L.T. could give.LaDainian Tomlinson wastedlittle time inking a 2-year $5.1million contract with the NewYork Jets.Another tough decision forthe Chargers was the releaseof their 12-year Pro Bowldefensive lineman nose-tackleJamal Williams.“This is a difficult time ofthe year and the most difficultpart of our job,” said GeneralManager A.J. Smith. “Jamalhas been an anchor of ourdefense for 12 seasons. He’sbattled courageously at one ofthe most punishing positionson the field, and I respect himimmensely.”Jamal Williams also wastedlittle time signing a lucrative$6 million guaranteed contractwith the Denver Broncos. These two player’s were thecornerstones of the San DiegoChargers. Also released was runningback Michael Bennett. Thin atthat position the Chargers immediatelyattempted to help fillthe void claiming running backMarcus Mason off waivers fromthe Washington Redskins. The 25-year-old Mason a5’9”, 215-pound college All-American from YoungstownState spent time with the Redskinsand Ravens. In nine NFLgames, the former 2007 freeagent had 32 rushes for 127yards, averaging nearly 4.00yards per carry.“We have a plan for theseason,” said Smith. It’s along off-season and we’ll havemany options. We’re confidentwe’ll be able to add strongdepth at all positions, includingrunning back.”Another tough decisioncame on March 5, when theChargers traded four-yearveterancornerback AntonioCromartie to the New York Jetsfor a conditional third-roundchoice, possibly becoming asecond-round draft pick in2011.A first-round selection by theChargers in 2006 from FloridaState, Cromartie had his bestyear in San Diego when hemade the Pro-Bowl leading theleague with 10 interceptions. He will be remembered for hisathleticism evidenced in a onehandedleaping interception, and for his return of a missedfield goal 109-yards against theMinnesota Vikings, a recordthat will never be broken. The Chargers faced somemore tough decisions regarding21 expired players contracts.Of the 21 players, 7 areUnrestricted Free Agents. Theyinclude linebacker ShawneMerriman, running back/returnspecialist Darren Sproles, widereceivers Vincent Jackson andMalcolm Floyd, and offensivetackle Marcus McNeil. These players may signan offer sheet with anotherteam, but because they weremaximum tendered contracts, the Chargers have a right tomatch any signed offer or becompensated with draft picks(a first and/or third roundpick) based on their tender ifthey choose not to match anyoutside offer.“Our intentions are to haveall out tendered players back,”said Smith. “We feel goodabout these players and continuityis important to us. Therecould be some developmentsin situations and we will waitand see. I don’t know whatactivity will come. I’m surethere will be some interest. We’ll deal with that when itcomes.”The San Diego Chargershold exclusive bargainingrights to free agent linebackerAntoine Applewhite and fullbackMike Tolbert. The Chargers will also beactively looking for depth infree agency. As one of lastseason’s final eight playoffteams they can sign only oneunrestricted free agent witha first year salary of $5.807million or more. They cansign an unlimited number ofplayers with a first year salaryof $3.862 million.San Diego as usual will belooking for depth in the NFLdraft. They hold the 28’thchoice in each round of thedraft’s seven rounds, exceptfor the second round movingup 20 slots after swappingthe second-round choice withthe Seattle Seahawks, gettingthe 40’th overall selection. This is the result of a trademade last Thursday betweenthe two teams sending to theSeahawks backup quarterbackCharlie Whitehurst. In additionSan Diego will also receive andundisclosed 2011 Seattle draftchoice. The Chargers gave uptheir 2010 sixth-round pickto Houston in last season’sacquisition of defensive linemanTravis Johnson, (a formerfirst-rounder).On Monday, the Chargerswere awarded a compensatory5’th round draft pick(168’th overall) in the 2010NFL draft. This is because theChargers lost more players tofree agency last year than itacquired. (Olshansky and Gofflost, Kevin Burnett signed, 2to 1).Also on Monday the Chargersparted company withwide receiver Demetrius Byrd.A seventh round choice fromLouisiana State, Byrd hadsuffered major injuries from acar accident in 2009 before theNFL draft. The Chargers tooka chance on him and generouslyextended him a contractthrough the 2009 season.Regarding the upcomingNFL draft Smith commented,“It’s a pretty good draft. They’re always good draftsand I say that every year. There’s a lot of good playersfor all of us to go out and get.I’m pretty excited about thelevel of players that they have. The rankings aren’t doneyet, we have plenty of timeto do that. We will hopefullymake some good selectionsand bring some of those fineyoung men in here to beChargers.”“It’s always exciting. Everyyears a new year. I can’t waituntil the Super Bowl is overbecause all those hopes anddreams start again. Our goal isto put together a championshiplevel team, and hopefully getback and win enough gamesto go to the post season. We’lladd some pieces, some newplayers and get at it again.”A.J. Smith has proven tobe a master at adding depthto this team via the draft andfree-agency.Unfortunately, the NFL isa business and has to be runlike a business. As we all know, there are no friends in business.

Not me, butI was a service manager in 1986when Hyundai came to the U.S.and, ugh, what a terrible car.Hyundai was not offended, theyreally listened to their dealersand customers and fast forwardtoday and now has one of thepremier car companies buildingcars that drivers love to drive.Today’s tester car is a brightred Genesis Coupe GT; in factthe real paint color name isTsukuba Red. Since I did notknow what Tsukuba Red meantI called Hyundai America andspoke with Jim Trainor Nationalmanager for Public Relations. He told me all the paint colorsare named after famous racetracks or turns on a famous racetrack..I then Googled the paintname and sure enough it cameup with a very famous race trackin Japan. Pretty cool.My tester car had the 3.8-liter V6 that produces 306horsepower and 266 poundfoot of torque backed by a 6-speed automatic transmissionwith paddle shifters that shiftedas smooth as butter. Buyerscan opt for a 6-speed manual, which is my choice, but I wasvery happy with the automatic. There is a choice of a 2.0-literfour cylinder if you desire, itputs out 210 horsepower and210 pound-foot of torque, plusthey added a turbocharger forthat extra boost. The fuel mileageon the V6 is estimated at17-city and 27-freeway and withthe four cylinder 21 city and 30freeway can be expected. The Genesis Coupe is verywell put together with performancesuspension at all fourcorners and rear wheel drive!Thank you Hyundai, I love rearwheel drive cars, they keep thefun in driving.Inside is leather treatment inthe seating, plus a lot of supportfor those twisty turns one mayencounter. The dash is welldone and at night the blue backlighting is very pleasant, operat-Toyota of Santee celebratesweekend sales eventing the climate controls werea breeze along with the otherfeatures that take a little concentrationto operate. My testerhad a sunroof, worked fine, justnot a sun roof kind of guy. Therear hatch was roomy and easyto open from inside the car orfrom the handy key fob.The only thing that really concernedme was how tinny thedoors sounded when closed, if Ididn’t know better I would havethought they forgotten to putsound insulation in the doors?I will stop by a local dealer andsee if the production cars areany quieter.Their warranty can’t be beat— five-year 50,000 bumper tobumper, 10-year 100,000 mileson the powertrain, five-year unlimitedmiles roadside assistanceand seven-year unlimited milesrust perforation. Now that iswhat I call standing behind theirproduct! The price is reasonable aswell, bases out at $30,000 andwith all the outstanding featuresincluded it’s still $30,000 plustax and license. Now that is theway to build and sell a car ifyou ask me!Bumper-To-Bumperwith Dave StallDave: I have a rather unusual situation, I bought a sixfoot utility trailer so I can haul my riding lawn mower tothe shop when needed and I was thinking about buyinga few Quads. So I bought the trailer, the guy at the shoptook my truck around back hooked up my trailer, gave mea few safety tips and sent me on my way. It towed beautifullyuntil I got home. I tried to unhook the trailer and itwouldn’t budge, I tried everything, so now my truck andnew trailer are permanently joined at the coupler. It is alittle embarrassing to have to tow my trailer everywhere Igo. Any suggestions on what I should do next? Gil.Gil: The first thing I would do is take it back to whereyou bought the trailer and ask him to explain why it won’tcome off the trailer ball or you could get a socket wrenchand loosen the bolt that is under the trailer receptacle. Some times from the factory you will find that that boltmay be out of adjustment, either to tight or to lose, yoursis to tight. For all you trailer owners you need to put thatbolt in your rotation when your checking wheel lugs fortightness most people don’t even know it is there. Happytrailering! Do you know the proper way to install the safetychains? Crisscrossed!Dave: Are there really any advantages in leasing a newcar, I’m on the fence and can’t decide. Cheryl.Cheryl: The advantage once you have put down thefirst and last payment is you lease payments are less thata regular payment, a lot of times maintenance is includedand it is easy to trade in and get a new vehicle as long asyou take very good care of the car or you will pay for tiresand repairs, such as scratches, dings and dents. The downside to leasing is mileage and we are all guilty of drivingmore than we should and in leasing you will pay around10 to 20 cents a mile extra so be aware.Come Visit YourMilitary FriendlyNeighborhood Dealership! No Hassle! MARCH 25, 2010 GAZETTE PAGE 23Our Best FriendsThe best method of training … ask a trainerby Nan Arthur,CDBC, CPDT, KPACTPDear Trainer,Ihave a new dog and Iknow you recommendusing food for training, but I do have some concerns.I don’t want my dog to getfat, and won’t I always haveto carry food around if I wantmy dog to behave? Are theselegitimate concerns, or am Iover thinking this?Signed,Concerned Dog MomDear Concerned,Congratulations on yournew dog, and I’m happy tohear that you are consideringpositive reinforcement training. You are not over thinkingthis—those are great questionsthat deserve answers.Like you, many people resistusing food as a reward whentraining, or if they are willingto try food as reinforcement, they are unwilling to keepthe reinforcement rate highenough in the early stages tomake a significant emotionalimpact on their dog’s thoughtprocess. This often happensbecause they don’t alwayshave a detailed understandingof how and when to use food,so the trend is to focus moreon overfeeding issues than thevalue of using one of the mostimportant resources in a dog’slife as a training tool.Simply put, food equalssurvival for dogs, but what reallymakes this fascinating aresome recent studies showingthat dogs were more excited towork for their food than receivingit in a dish each day.Domestic dogs that live as feraldogs have been the subjectof some great studies recently.By observing feral dogs, scientistshave learned that theyspend a good deal of theirday scavenging and lookingfor food, so when humans puttheir kibble in the bowl eachday, we are forcing our dogsinto the unemployment line!Using food during traininghelps dogs, twofold: First, they get to “earn” their foodand satisfy an innate need toscavenge, and, 2nd, the fooditself makes that impact on thebrain that builds new behaviorsfaster and stronger. With that in mind, it’s importantwhen you are first teachingyour dog any new behavior, ortrying to work on modifying anold one, that you are generouswith the food in the beginning. However, your intentionshould be to use less and lessfood as your dog understandsthe connection, and as thedesired behavior builds towardmuscle memory. Once youhave muscle memory, yourdog won’t even have to thinkwhen he hears, “Sit.” It will beautomatic, just like many of thethings we do in our daily lives, such as driving.Unfortunately, when there isresistance to using food rewardsearly on, the dog misses buildingthose strong neuropathwaysfor the new behavior and thatADOPT-A-PEToften allows the old, unwantedbehaviors to surface when yourdog is feeling stressed or overlyexcited by the environment.Stress hormones, whether theymanifest from good or badstress, will always trump unstableor weak behaviors, andin these situations, you mightfind your dog pulling the oldbehaviors out of his toolboxwhen under pressure. That’swhy it’s so important to beliberal with your food rewardsin the beginning. As you progress with yourtraining, the focus can be tofade the food, but only afterthe behavior is strong, andyour dog can do them inmany different situations andenvironments. To ease your mind aboutusing food rewards, look at thefollowing list and their caloriecounts; it should make you feelmuch better that you really arenot going overboard with thefood rewards. Most dogs willquickly burn the extra caloriesduring training, and you canalways reduce their total dailykibble, not to mention thatyou have a much better behaveddog! The size of the treatshould be about pea-sized.Examples of DifferentValued Food Rewards andTheir Calorie Content:Vienna Sausages: One sausageequals 40-50 treats andhas 40 caloriesTurkey Hot Dog: One turkeydog equals 80-100 treats andhas 70 caloriesReina is a sweet & gentle 2-year old 50-pound Dalmatian blend.
