ASWOperation tasks include responding rapidly and decisively to enemy submarine contacts; employingsensors and weapons to neutralize the target; and providingcommanders with a common tactical picture of the underseabattlespace.Target submarines are detected with active and passive sonarduring an ASW Operation. Submarines almost exclusively usepassive sonar. Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) aircraft, bothhelicopters and fixed-wing, use a combination of passive andactive sonobuoys. Helicopters may also use active dipping sonarwhile hovering.
