Education, Race, <strong>and</strong> Ethnicity <strong>of</strong>Away-From-Home ParticipantsAs in the case <strong>of</strong> household income,educational achievement <strong>and</strong> participationin away-from-home wildlifewatching have a direct correlation.<strong>About</strong> 4 percent <strong>of</strong> the U.S. populationwith 11 years <strong>of</strong> education or lessparticipated, compared to 19 percent<strong>of</strong> the population with 5 years or more<strong>of</strong> college. The educational cohort withthe most participants was 4 years <strong>of</strong>college, with 5.4 million recreationists.The educational cohort with the fewestrecreationists was 11 years or less, with1.2 million.The participation rates by race variedgreatly. Approximately 11 percent <strong>of</strong>Whites <strong>and</strong> 5 percent <strong>of</strong> other racesexcept African Americans <strong>and</strong> AsianAmericans took trips to wildlife watch.In contrast, 3 percent <strong>of</strong> African Americans<strong>and</strong> 2 percent <strong>of</strong> Asian Americansparticipated. Of the total 22.5 millionaway-from-home participants, 92percent were White, 3 percent wereAfrican Americans, 1 percent wereAsian Americans, <strong>and</strong> 4 percent wereother races.<strong>About</strong> 1.4 million recreationists wereHispanic, 6 percent <strong>of</strong> all participants.Approximately 4 percent <strong>of</strong> the U.S.Hispanic population took trips toengage in wildlife watching. Of thenon-Hispanic population, 10 percent(21.1 million participants) took trips towildlife watch.
