Metropolitan and NonmetropolitanAround-The-Home ParticipantsApproximately 91 percent of aroundthe-homewildlife watchers lived inmetropolitan areas, as defined by theU.S. Census Bureau. Metropolitanstatistical areas, or MSAs 1 , withpopulations of 1 million or more had aparticipation rate of 25 percent, lowerthan any smaller MSA or non-MSA.Nonetheless, recreationists from themost populous MSAs comprised 46percent of all around-the-home wildlifewatchers. In MSAs of 250,000 to999,999, the participation rate was 33percent and they made up 23 percentof all around-the-home recreationists.About 22 percent of around-the-homewildlife watchers lived in MSAs witha population from 50,000 to 249,999.The population of these areas had aparticipation rate of 32 percent.The participation rate for nonmetropolitanpopulations was 38 percent, higherthan for any MSA.
