<strong>Wildlife</strong>-Watching ExpendituresThirty-eight percent <strong>of</strong> all the dollarsspent in 2011 for wildlife-related recreationwas due to wildlife watching.<strong>Wildlife</strong>-watching participants 16 yearsold or older spent $54.9 billion, anaverage <strong>of</strong> $981 per spender. Seventyeightpercent <strong>of</strong> all wildlife watchersspent money on their avocation.<strong>Wildlife</strong> watchers spent $17.3 billionon trips pursuing their activities. Food<strong>and</strong> lodging accounted for $9.3 billion(54 percent <strong>of</strong> all trip-related expenditures),transportation expenses totaled$6.0 billion (35 percent), <strong>and</strong> other tripcosts, such as l<strong>and</strong> use fees <strong>and</strong> equipmentrental, amounted to $1.9 billion(11 percent) for the year.These recreationists purchased $27.2billion worth <strong>of</strong> equipment for wildlifewatching. They spent $11.3 billion(42 percent <strong>of</strong> all equipment expenditures)on wildlife-watching equipmentincluding binoculars, cameras, birdfood, <strong>and</strong> special clothing. Expendituresfor auxiliary equipment, suchas tents <strong>and</strong> backpacking equipment,totaled $1.6 billion (6 percent) for theyear.
