<strong>Wildlife</strong> Watching HighlightsNearly a third <strong>of</strong> the U.S. populationenjoyed wildlife watching in 2011.<strong>Wildlife</strong> watching is defined here asclosely observing, feeding, <strong>and</strong> photographingwildlife, visiting public parksaround the home because <strong>of</strong> wildlife,<strong>and</strong> maintaining plantings <strong>and</strong> naturalareas around the home for the benefit<strong>of</strong> wildlife. These activities are categorizedas around the home (within a mile<strong>of</strong> home) or away from home (at leastone mile from home).The 2011 <strong>Survey</strong> counts wildlifewatching as recreational activities, asdefined above, in which the primaryobjective was to watch wildlife.Secondary or incidental participation,such as observing wildlife while doingsomething else, was not included in the<strong>Survey</strong>.During 2011, 71.8 million U.S. residents,30 percent <strong>of</strong> the U.S. population16 years old or older, participatedin wildlife-watching activities. Peoplewho took an interest in wildlife aroundtheir homes numbered 68.6 million,while those who took trips away fromtheir homes to wildlife watch numbered22.5 million people.Wild Bird ObserversOf all the wildlife in the United States,birds attracted the biggest following.Approximately 46.7 million peopleobserved birds around the home <strong>and</strong>on trips in 2011.
