Appendix B.2010 Participation of 6- to 15-Year-Olds andHistorical Participation of Sportspersons:Data From Screening InterviewsThe 2011 National Survey of Fishing,Hunting, and Wildlife-AssociatedRecreation was carried out in twophases. The first (or screening) phasebegan in April 2011. The main purposeof this phase was to collect informationabout all persons 16 years old andolder in order to develop a sample ofpotential sportspersons and wildlifewatchers for the second (or detailed)phase. However, information was alsocollected on the number of persons6 to 15 years old who participated inwildlife-related recreation activities in2010.It is important to emphasize that theinformation reported from the 2011screen relates to activity only up to andincluding 2010. Also, these data arereported by one household respondentspeaking for all household membersrather than the actual participants. In addition, these data are based onlong-term recall (at least a 12-monthrecall), which has been found in Surveyresearch (see Investigation of PossibleRecall/Reference Period Bias inNational Surveys of Fishing, Huntingand Wildlife-Associated Recreation,December 1989, Westat, Inc.) to addbias to the resulting estimates. In manycases, longer recall periods result inoverestimating participation and expendituresfor wildlife-related recreation.Tables B-1 through B-4 report data onfirst-time participation and the mostrecent year of hunting and fishingfor participants 6 years of age andolder. Tables B-5 through B-8 reportdata specifically on 6- to 15-year-oldparticipants in 2010. Detailed expendituresand recreational activity data werenot gathered for the 6- to 15-year-oldparticipants. Table B-9 lists the trenddata for 6- to 15-year-old participants.Because of differences in methodologiesof the screening and thedetailed phases of the 2011 Survey, the estimates of the two phases arenot comparable. Only participants 16years old and older were eligible forthe detailed phase. The screening phasecovered activity for 2010 or earlier; thedetailed phase has estimates for only2011. The detailed phase was a seriesof interviews of the actual participantsconducted at 4- and 8-month intervals. The screening phase was a single interviewof one household respondent whoreported household events with oneyear or more recall. The shorter recallperiod of the detailed phase enabledbetter data accuracy.100 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Census Bureau
