Án<strong>and</strong>a asked, "What are <strong>the</strong> nine kinds <strong>of</strong> untimely death?"<strong>The</strong> Bodhisattva Who Rescues <strong>and</strong> Liberates said, "<strong>The</strong>re may be living beingswho, although not seriously ill, have nei<strong>the</strong>r medicine nor a doctor to treat<strong>the</strong>m, or else <strong>the</strong>y meet a doctor who gives <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> wrong medicine;consequently, <strong>the</strong>y meet with an untimely death.Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m believe in worldly cults, whose deviant teachers frighten <strong>the</strong>mwith false prophecies .Unable to set <strong>the</strong>ir minds at ease, <strong>the</strong>y consult oracles to find out whatcalamities are in store for <strong>the</strong>m.In order to propitiate <strong>the</strong> spirits, <strong>the</strong>y kill various creatures.<strong>The</strong>y pray to wang liang ghosts for aid <strong>and</strong> protection. Although <strong>the</strong>y wish toprolong <strong>the</strong>ir lives, <strong>the</strong>ir efforts are to no avail.<strong>The</strong>y deludedly hold to wrong beliefs <strong>and</strong> perverse views. Thus <strong>the</strong>y meet withan untimely death <strong>and</strong> fall into <strong>the</strong> hells, never to come out.This is <strong>the</strong> first kind <strong>of</strong> untimely death.<strong>The</strong> second kind <strong>of</strong> untimely death is to be executed at <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> law.<strong>The</strong> third kind is to hunt for sport, to indulge in drinking <strong>and</strong> lust, or tobecome excessively dissipated, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n to be waylaid by non-human beingsthat rob one's essence <strong>and</strong> energy.<strong>The</strong> fourth is to be burned to death; <strong>the</strong> fifth is to drown; <strong>the</strong> sixth is to bedevoured by wild beasts;<strong>the</strong> seventh is to fall from a steep cliff; <strong>the</strong> eighth is to be harmed by poison,voodoo, evil mantras, or <strong>the</strong> corpse-raising ghosts; <strong>the</strong> ninth is to die fromhunger <strong>and</strong> thirst.<strong>The</strong>se are <strong>the</strong> nine kinds <strong>of</strong> untimely deaths generally spoken <strong>of</strong> by <strong>the</strong>Tathágata.<strong>The</strong>re are also innumerable o<strong>the</strong>r kinds which cannot all be spoken <strong>of</strong> here.""Moreover, Án<strong>and</strong>a, King Yama keeps track <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> karmic records <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong>inhabitants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world.If <strong>the</strong>re are beings who are not filial to <strong>the</strong>ir parents, who commit <strong>the</strong> FiveRebellious Acts, who revile <strong>the</strong> Triple Jewel, who destroy <strong>the</strong> laws <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>country, or who violate <strong>the</strong> precept <strong>of</strong> truthfulness, <strong>the</strong>n Yama, <strong>the</strong> king <strong>of</strong>justice, examines <strong>and</strong> punishes <strong>the</strong>m according to <strong>the</strong> severity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>of</strong>fenses.
