ROTARY CHRISTMAS IN JULY, Crows Nest, 23/25 July 2010 ñ George Lake. This annual fun weekend designed to start our new Rotary year, went off with a real bang. It grew from about 20 last year, to 48 this time, with 13 caravans, one motor home, Top marks must go to Neal & Robyn for their organization, and to our own Master Chef Connor and fire pit mate Debra for the Friday night bush banquet, Beef Stroganoff and Chicken Curry, and who could forget Debraís Lumberjack cake and hot custard. It was a wonder that we could eat anything at all after the endless parade of prediner snacks handed around the fire, with everyone trying to out do the other in taste and presentation. Saturday was a ìfreeî day, but taken advantage of by shoppers in the town, bush and the rest tucked up in cosy cabins. As President Don said, ìa fantastic eventî. walks and even Mike & Melissaís journey to visit their retirement property in Warwick. Mike even brought back a rock, and spent that evening trying to establish was it natural, or a meteorite, or even filled with gold and diamonds. The Saturday night dinner in the parks licensed restaurant was a busy affair, as a vintage caravan club was also there, and with our 48 and their numbers about the same, the parkís family cooks had a very busy time. With the main hall not able to seat us all at once, we were set up in an annexe and kept cosy with three large gas heaters. Robynís secret Santa went along calmly, but the newly added raffle was an absolute hilarious hit, with most of the commotion caused by additional prizes donated by a certain baker in our club, which surprisingly nobody wanted, and they were ìrecycledî many times. Sunday morning was pack up and go time, but early starts were the go as the multitude headed for the Cabarlah Country Market, with over 200 stalls, with every thing from plants to home made cakes, and clothing to farm tools. The Clubís Event Caterer coerced his driver to call in to Schulteís Meat Tavern at Plainlands where he stocked up on all delicacies related to Pork, so if youíre short of a meal next week, drop in and see what is on his menu. Finally, as scribe of this epistle, may I be allowed the privilege of thanking all of those people who assisted me over the weekend, and particularly mention Frances my driver and breakfast chef, and ìalways thereî Yvonne, who treats me like I was her Son, or maybe her Father.
