Georgeís account which follows later in this Bulletin. The result of the Raffle
raised $212 from the 48 ìrevellersî. Neal also told us about the inauguration of
the Mick Matthews Perpetual Trophy. The shirt, which is a hang over from the
ì60sî party was offered as a prize in the Raffle. Itís such a horrific prize that it will
be raffled each year at the same function. Roy Buckley is this yearís proud
wearer. We wonít talk about another prize - the kangaroo skin ìwarmers for ???
President Don called up the organiser for
Mudflat Toys. Vince Gordon and presented him
with a cheque which will enable Mudflat Toys to
purchase of a new compressor for their
enterprise. Mudflat Toys had donated a Dollsí
House to the Club. The Board had decided that
it will be donated to a Childrenís Hospital ñ
Maybe the new one being built at
Woolloongabba.
PDG Nick Curry sought
leave to present two
awards to President Don
representing PP Mick
Matthews. The first was a
Rotary International
President, John Kennyís
Citation for outstanding
achievements within
Wynnum and manly during
Mickís year as President.
The second was the presentation of the RAVE Medallion (Rotary Award for
Vocational Excellence) which was given to Graeme Wescombe for his
outstanding service through The New Generations Directorship over the past
four years. Well deserved but totally unexpected by the recipient.
Kate Bardsley and Liam Scanlan spoke to the
Club on their experience of RYLA. Kate
suggested that it was the ìcraziestî camp she
had ever been on. She did not really want to go
but after the third day she realised what a
privilege she had been able to experience which
changed her whole approach to the way she
lived her life.
Liam endorsed
Kateís comments.
He said a young
person, he was
concerned how he was going to do without a
telephone or a computer for eight days was
unthinkable. Yet he found that like the other 43
participants he had experienced a different
perspective on life and a renewed sense of
purpose. Both Kate and Liam were full of praise
for the work of Rotary in this direction.
**** **** **** ****

This was followed by a short talk by Ryan
Blunden on the joys of RYLA and G.S.E. trip to
Canada. His emphasis was on the experience
and value of all Rotary based initiatives for young
people. He thought that the time spent in the
homes of people overseas had truly enriched his
appreciation of the qualities of other people. He
continues to put this appreciation into daily
practice in his new found job opportunities which
he attributes to his involvement in Rotary.
Graeme Wescombe introduced the Awards for Citizenship in our Secondary
Nathan Jackson ñ Moreton Bay Boys College
wonderful ambassador, both for his school and Australia.
enthusiasm to succeed. Nathanís strength of character is reflected in the mature
relationships that he has developed with his peers and as a result of a number of
personal challenges this past year, including the death of his father. He has
been a great support to his mother and younger sister through this difficult time.
Nathan is planning a trip to Canada to celebrate the end of year 12, before
pursuing his chosen study path.
Rebecca LíBarrow - Brisbane Bayside State College.
contribution to the school and wider community. She
cooperates with others in achieving scholastic & school
community objectives, has positive life attitudes, &
enjoys good relationships with staff & fellow students.
Rebecca is an excellent student who has participated
in many extra curricular activities with the school
community including the school musical, the Spring
acknowledged and recognised for her selfless contributions to the school and
the wider community.
Murray Manning - Balmoral State High School
Murray arrived at Balmoral State High School in
2006 and over the last five years has maintained
exemplary standards of attendance, personal
presentation and conduct.
He is a diligent student who is motivated and
committed to his studies. Over the years Murray
has developed outstanding leadership skills which
have been recognised by his appointment as
Head of House for Apollo in 2010. He is an
excellent ambassador representing his House and
the school, and is contributing significantly to the
development of a positive student culture and community image. Murray is
Murray is a keen advocate for a better environment, is active member of
Balmoral Highís Environment Committee which hopes to expand its recycling
program. He is also an Australian Youth Climate Coalition representative.
Murray has demonstrated significant initiative and an ability to work
independently as a member of the Balmoral State High Schoolís Boeing
Enterprise Team for the past five years. This ëcross-ageí team is a designated
class in the schoolís curriculum where students are given the opportunity to work
on completing various projects for Boeing defence Australia. This industry link
developed out of the schoolís alliance with the Gateway Aerospace Schools
Project. As a member of this team, Murray has
developed a number of essential ëemployabilityí
skills which are transferable to the workforce.
Kristy Palmer - Lourdes Hill College
Kristy is a quiet achiever. She is Academic
Leader of McKee House, and has received an
Academic Award every semester since
beginning at the College in Year 8. This is a
difficult award to achieve in any year level, and

in Years 11 and 12 a student is required to achieve an ëAí standard in at least
five of the six or seven subjects studied, to receive this award.
In many ways Kristy is a very positive role model for younger students. In
addition to her academic achievements, she is a dedicated musician and
member of the College Concert Band, participating in various Queensland
Catholic Schools and College competitions, the Rock Eisteddfod and the
Cabaret. She is also involved in kayaking, aerobics and drama.
Her care and concern for others is obvious in her membership of various College
service groups, including the College chapter of St Vincent de Paul Society,
Rosies and the year 11 Outreach Program.
In the wider community, Kristy has recently achieved the prestigious Queenís
Scout award which requires applicants to demonstrate significant achievements
in the areas of Adventurous Activity, Community Involvement, Leadership
Development and Personal Growth. Kristy has been working on this award
since Year 10 and says the best part of undertaking the award was ìthat it gave
me the chance to experience new thingsÖ.Iíve become more confident and
aware of who I am as a person.î
Tyron (TJ) Tauroa - Wynnum State High School
Tyron, known to the school as TJ, is considered a
pleasure to teach by all his teachers and
academically has been a great role model to other
students. He is smart, dedicated and always quietly
persistent.
In the past two years, TJ has taken on the
responsibility as leader of a large group of students
who have formed a Dance Crew at Wynnum State
High. TJ has been outstanding in leading this group
of 50 students, teaching them how to cooperate with
each other and staff. He has broken down barriers
between multicultural groups and strengthened
school pride. The Dance Crew has successfully participated in the ëBring it Oní
dance competition for the last two years. He has been able to take his love of
dancing to a new level in 2010, representing Queensland, and now Australia, in
the varsity section of Hip Hop dancing.
Because of TJís leadership, commitment, energy and persistence, the school
has been awarded $300 from the Vietnamese community of Australia from a Hip
Hop competition in 2009, and $500 from the Bring it On Secondary Schools
Dance competition in 2009. His contribution to Wynnum High and its students
gives many a reason to turn up to school each day. It is a wonderful sight to see
him leading his group on the oval at 7.00 a.m. each day.
TJís commitment to teamwork has seen him welcome three other students to
support him in the leadership of the dance crew.
Wynnum High is very pleased and proud to be able to present this outstanding
young man to the Wynnum & Manly Rotary community.

Jemma Payne - Moreton Bay College
Since starting in Year 8 at Moreton Bay College in
2006, Jemma has aimed to uphold the values of
the College and work to develop cooperative
relationships with her teachers, fellow students and
the wider College community. Always a positive
role model, Jemma provides support for staff and
students alike.
After being elected by her peers and teachers into
the role of House Worship and Service Captain,
Jemma has shown initiative, motivation and
leadership as she has worked closely with the
College and House Captains, as well as all members of the senior cohort and
staff, to achieve the seniorís Legacy of Unity.
In conjunction with other Worship and Service Captains, Jemma was
instrumental in coordinating an appeal to raise funds for the victims of both the
Haiti and Chile natural disasters raising just under $3000 which has been
donated to Doctors without Borders.
With body image being an ever-growing issue amongst teenagers, Jemma felt
that the House Service Project should focus on promoting positive self-esteem
amongst the girls at the College. She liaised with both The Butterfly Foundation,
and the locally run charity, Isis, as focus groups to support, and gathered
promotional materials. These were then promoted throughout the Senior
College to increase awareness, empathy and understanding of these issues. So
far $1000 has been raised to donate to these worthy causes.
At a House level, Jemma has provided guidance and support as she worked
with student volunteers to organise and present both a Year 11 and Year 12
Chapel Service focusing on self acceptance, and recognising and working with
your individual strengths.
Joseph Roberson - Iona College
Josephís list of achievements, involvement and
efforts over the last three years are most
impressive. He is obviously a well organised
and caring member of the College community.
Since he was in Year 9, Joseph has been
involved in tutoring younger students, and in
Year 11 started the ëJunior ñ Senior Linkí
Tutoring Program. This involved the
coordinating of boys from Years 10, 11, and 12
to tutoring Years 5 & 6 boys in Maths before
school. There are now 60 tutors from years 10
to 12, tutoring 50 Junior school students.
He has also coordinated various Fund-raising activities for Rosies (a volunteer
group providing comfort for Brisbaneís homeless). Funds raised grew each year
from $250 in 2007 to $1400 this year.

Joseph completed his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award and started his Silver in
Year 10. For the last two years he has assisted Bronze participants in their
various activities. In Year 11, Joseph completed his Silver award, commenced
his Gold, and received the Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation K2
Encouragement Award for his Duke of Edinburgh participation.
Throughout the years Joseph has been involved with Ionaís environmental
group, TUNZA; assisted in the Junior school office; completed several grades
in piano studies and in 2008 compiled the Iona Old Boys Jubilee calendar ñ
class of 1972.
In Year 11 Joseph participated in a Residential Project at Toomelah, an
aboriginal community on the Qld/NSW border. Living in the community he
assisted with teaching (pre-school) and tutoring maths and spelling.
This year Joseph became a College Prefect (faith portfolio) and House Leader
(spiritual portfolio). Amongst other things his tasks include Playground duty,
Years 5/8 Orientation programs and Eucharistic Minister and alter service.
Alex Bey - Alexandra Hills State High School
Alex has enriched the Alexandra Hills State High
School community through his service orientated
approach to leadership. As a Year 12 student he
serves the school through active leadership roles
in welfare and curriculum for younger students.
As a Senior leader, he has taken a keen interest
in the welfare of students in his Year 8 form class.
He has helped their transition into high school
with advice, tips and tricks to make their
experience more enjoyable.
As a Literacy Mentor, Alex has helped Year 8 & 9
students struggling with literacy to improve their
reading & writing, giving them a better chance of success for the years ahead.
As English Mentor, he has conscientiously supported the Head of English with
many of the programs run by the English Department for students. He and his
co-mentor also initiated visits to Year 8 English classes in their spares to present
an example of the first high school oral Year 8ís would have to do.
Alex has also tutored Year 11 Economics students and represented the school
at the ìAustralian Computational and Linguistics Olympiadî. He has been a very
reliable and successful member of the Year 12 Debating team.
He has also helped out at Open Days for Year 8, Years 9 & 10, and Years 11 &
12; and represented the school at ANZAC Day ceremonies. Alex is also school
representative for the ìFutures Leaders Writing Prizeî.
Outside school Alex is assistant coach of a PCYC under 14s Basketball Team.
ROTARY CHRISTMAS IN JULY, Crows
Nest, 23/25 July 2010 ñ George Lake.
This annual fun weekend designed to start
our new Rotary year, went off with a real
bang. It grew from about 20 last year, to 48
this time, with 13 caravans, one motor home,
Top marks must go to Neal & Robyn for their
organization, and to our own Master Chef
Connor and fire pit mate Debra for the Friday night bush banquet, Beef
Stroganoff and Chicken Curry, and who could forget Debraís Lumberjack cake
and hot custard.
It was a wonder that we could eat anything at all after the endless parade of prediner
snacks handed around the fire, with everyone trying to out do the other in
taste and presentation.
Saturday was a ìfreeî day, but taken advantage of by shoppers in the town, bush
and the rest tucked up in cosy cabins. As President Don said, ìa fantastic eventî.
walks and even Mike & Melissaís journey to visit their retirement property in
Warwick. Mike even brought back a rock, and spent that evening trying to
establish was it natural, or a meteorite, or even filled with gold and diamonds.
The Saturday night dinner in the parks licensed restaurant was a busy affair, as
a vintage caravan club was also there, and with our 48 and their numbers about
the same, the parkís family cooks had a very busy time. With the main hall not
able to seat us all at once, we were set up in an annexe and kept cosy with three
large gas heaters.
Robynís secret Santa went along calmly, but the newly added raffle was an
absolute hilarious hit, with most of the commotion caused by additional prizes
donated by a certain baker in our club, which surprisingly nobody wanted, and
they were ìrecycledî many times.
Sunday morning was pack up and go time, but early starts were the go as the
multitude headed for the Cabarlah Country Market, with over 200 stalls, with
every thing from plants to home made
cakes, and clothing to farm tools.
The Clubís Event Caterer coerced his driver
to call in to Schulteís Meat Tavern at
Plainlands where he stocked up on all
delicacies related to Pork, so if youíre short
of a meal next week, drop in and see what
is on his menu.
Finally, as scribe of this epistle, may I be
allowed the privilege of thanking all of those people who assisted me over the
weekend, and particularly mention Frances my driver and breakfast chef, and
ìalways thereî Yvonne, who treats me like I was her Son, or maybe her Father.
Thanks to everyone who made this a great weekend, of fun and fellowship.
