BOREHOLE SEISMOMETER
The Guralp CMG-3TB borehole seismometer uses the CMG-3T transducers stacked
vertically in a waterproof stainless steel sonde. The sonde can be installed in 3.5-
inch minimum diameter up to 7 inch steel-cased holes (For diameters outside this
range please consult the factory). The velocity output is flat from 0.0008 (120 sec) to
50 Hz, (other responses availble) and the response can be set between 2*750 V/m/s
and 2*10,000 V/m/s. Refer to the separate CMG-3T specification sheet.
CMG-3TB systems have been tested by the US Geological Survey at its
Albuquerque Seismologcal Laboratory as part of the incoming inspection for the
IRIS-GSN instrumentation program. Self-noise plots from some of these tests are
available. The ASL installations are in sand without the optional lock.
The sonde includes the following components, from top to bottom.
Lifting bail with eye hole
Top cap with 1500 psi stainless connector set
CMG-3TB Vertical broadband sensor
" Optional hole lock with motor, (either single Jaw or three jaw versions
available)
Borehole Accessories and Installation
Strain Relief Fixture. Isolates the
sensors from the signal and strain
cable weight and motion.
Downhole Digitizer. The CMG-
DM24 Digitiser Module can be
mounted on the strain relief fixture.
Waterproof Cables. Analog and
digital cables are available. Fiberoptic
cables can be used in deep holes.
Azimuth Orientation Table. This
table supports the two horizontal
transducers and can be rotated
digitally from the surface.
Installation in Sand. The sensor can be
stabilized at the bottom of the hole with
sand (up to the top of the sonde) to
minimize convection around the system.
