Dos amigos viajaban por el desierto y en un 

determinado punto del viaje discutieron, y uno

A n a T e r e s a P a r r a S a n o j o 

(nace París, 5 de octubre de 1889 - muere Madrid, 23 de 

abril de 1936) conocida como Teresa de la Parra, fue 

una escritora venezolana, y una aristócrata. Considerada 

una de las escritoras más destacadas de su época. 

A pesar de que la gran parte de su vida transcurrió en el 

extranjero, supo expresar en su obra literaria el ambiente 

íntimo y familiar de la Venezuela de ese entonces. A la 

edad de 19, el poema que escribió para celebrar "el día de 

la beatificación de la Venerable Madre Magdalena Sofía 

Barat" le llevo a ganar el primer premio. Incursionó en el 

mundo de las letras de la mano del periodismo, escribió 

dos novelas que la inmortalizaron en toda América: 

Ifigenia y Memorias de Mamá Blanca. Su novela más 

conocida Ifigenia, planteó por primera vez en el país el 

drama de la mujer frente a una sociedad que no le 

permitía tener voz propia y cuya única opción de vida, 

según la sociedad, era el matrimonio legalmente 

constituido y escribía por aburrida y fastidiada.Por ello, el 

título de Ifigenia remite al personaje griego y al sacrificio. 

En 1930, Su novela Ifigenia fue publicada en 1924 gano el 

primer lugar en el Concurso de autores americanos en 

Francia en el mismo año y una traducción en francés 

apareció muy poco después es su segunda novela, 

publicada en 1929, considerada un clásico de la literatura 

hispanoamericana, constituye la primera gran novela de 

evocación de la literatura venezolana. Teresa de la Parra 

fue invitado a ofrecer una serie de conferencias en 

Bogotá. Publicado en 1961, estos textos se refieren a la 

influencia de las mujeres en la cultura española e historia. 

En estas conferencias de la Parra compartió sus ideas del 

feminismo y dijo que las mujeres deben ser fuertes y sanos, 

deben trabajar y ser financieramente independiente, y 

deben considerar a los hombres como a sus amigos y 

compañeros, no como su propietario o enemigos. Ella se 

llama a sí misma una feminista moderada, y argumentó 

que un cambio radical y abrupto no traería estabilidad 

entre los dos sexos. Teresa de la Parra es bien reconocido 

por su amor de una manera fácil, relajada vida y su 

pasión por la moda. Murió como consecuencia de perder 

la batalla contra la 

tuberculosis y el asma. 

En 1986 el director de cine 

Iván Feo lleva la novela a 

las pantallas de cine con 

el mismo título: Ifigenia.

-Ana Teresa Parra Sanojo 

Ana Teresa Parra Sanojo 

( Born Paris, October 5, 1889 -.. Die, Madrid, April 23, 

1936) known as Teresa de la Parra, she was a Venezuelan 

writer and aristocrat. Considered one of the leading 

writers of her time. Although much of her life was spent 

abroad, she was able to express in her writing the 

intimate and family in Venezuela at that time 

environment. At the age of 19, she wrote the poem to 

celebrate "the day of the beatification of the Venerable 

Mother Madeleine Sophie Barat" which led her to win 

the first prize. She entered the world of letters hand 

journalism, wrote two novels immortalized in Latin: 

Iphigenia and Memories of Mama Blanca. Her most 

famous novel Ifigenia, first raised in the country the

their ideas of feminism, saying that women should be 

strong and healthy, they must work and be financially 

independent, and should consider men as friends 

and partners, not as its owner or enemies. 

She calls herself a moderate feminist, and argued 

that a radical and abrupt change would not bring 

stability between the two sexes. Teresa de la Parra 

is well known for her love of an easy, relaxed life 

and her passion for fashion. She died as a result of 

losing the battle against tuberculosis and asthma. 

In 1986 the film director Ivan Feo brings the novel 

to cinema screens with the same title: Iphigenia.

María Izquierdo. Fue la primera pintora 

mexicana en exponer sus obras fuera del país en el 

año 1930 nació en San Juan de los Lagos, Jalisco, 30 

de octubre de 1902. Su primera exposición tuvo lugar 

en el Art Center de la ciudad de Nueva York. Murió en 

la Ciudad de México, el 2 de diciembre de 1955. Sus 

restos descansan en la Rotonda de las Personas 

Ilustres desde el 22 de noviembre de 2012. A los 

cinco años de edad perdió a su 

padre y desde pequeña, su 

educación fue delegada a sus 

abuelos, hasta que su madre se 

casó nuevamente. 

La infancia de María Izquierdo es 

probablemente la razón de sus 

fuerzas libertarias como artista. 

En sus primeras obras 

en 1927 a 1930 muestran su 

entorno más 

inmediato: 

retratos de sus 

seres queridos y 

amigos, como 

el Retrato de 

Belem (1928), 

o Niñas durmiendo 

(1930), el cual es el 

retrato de su hija 

Amparo y una 

sobrina; así como, 

naturalezas 

muertas y 

paisajes. Las 

pinturas revelan mucho del 

entorno que la envolvió en su 

tránsito desde su infancia rural 

y la vida adulta en la ciudad de 

México. En algunas de sus obras 

aparecen incluso algunas 

industrias, las cuales existían 

contundentemente en el entorno 

y que de esa manera, en 1930 

llevó a cabo una composición de 

la cementera La Tolteca, con la 

que participó en un concurso artístico convocado por 

la misma empresa y que le otorgó una mención 

honorífica especial del jurado. En 1927 ingresó a 

la Academia de San Carlos en donde estudió durante un 

año. En ella tuvo a algunos maestros como Germán 

Gedovius y a Manuel Toussaint, aunque cabe mencionar que 

la influencia más profunda la obtuvo de Rufino Tamayo. 

Maria Izquierdo. Was the first Mexican artist 

to exhibit her works abroad in 1930 she was born in 

San Juan de los Lagos, Jalisco, October 30, 1902. 

Her first exhibition was held at the Art Center in New

In some of her works are even

en Los Ángeles, CA. 

Comenzamos preguntándole sobre su 

infancia Cindy nos dijo: Recuerdo que mi 

mamá me enseñó a leer desde muy 

pequeña. Siempre tomaba el tiempo para 

leer conmigo por la noche antes de 

dormir. Nunca demostraba lo cansada 

que estaba después de haber trabajado 

muchas horas. Siempre ha sido 

mi súper mamá. Mi mamá se llama 

Edith García, y mi hermano es Anthony 

Ramírez. Mi padrastro es Cesar García. 

Cindy asistió a la primaria Cherrylee 

Elementary School y Mission Bell 

Elementary School, su secunadria en Mira 

Loma Middle School, su preparatoria en 

Jurupa Valley High School continuo sus 

estudios en la University of California, 

Los Angeles. 

Ella sobresale por su servicio comunitario 

y el apoyo a nuestra comunidad, en sus 

palabras: En el año 2012 fui parte de 

AmeriCorps, un programa que presta 

servicio a la comunidad a nivel nacional. 

Yo participé en la ciudad de Los Ángeles, 

California, en la organización, Centro de 

Recursos Centroamericanos-Los Angeles, 

conocida por sus siglas como CARECEN-LA. 

Es una organización sin fines de lucro que 

al principio ofrecía servicios solamente a 

Salvadoreños que huían de la guerra civil 

en su país, pero hoy día provee servicios 

legales de inmigración a toda la 

comunidad. Al terminar mi 

servicio con AmeriCorps 

en el 2013, CARECEN-LA 

me ofreció un puesto 

p e r m a n e n t e c o m o 

asistente legal. El año 

pasado apliqué para mi 

Fé, fortaleza, y creer en 

uno mismo. Es todo lo que 

se necesita para lograr lo 

que nos proponemos. 

Y pensar siempre que no 

hay imposibles.

acreditación para poder representar a 

nuestros clientes frente oficiales 

de inmigración, y mi solicitud fue 

aprobada. Ahora trabajo como 

representante acreditado para CARECEN-LA. 

En los años que he trabajado para la 

organización he aprendido mucho sobre 

leyes de inmigración, he representado 

clientes que están solicitando su 

residencia y ciudadanía frente oficiales 

de inmigración, y me he hecho cargo 

de casos que requieren un perdón 

provisional para que personas que tienen 

que regresar a su país de origen para 

asistir su cita de residencia no tengan 

que estar fuera del país por muchos 

años. 

Llama nuestra atención como ella ama 

ayudar a personas en su trabajo ella nos 

explica: Trabajar para una organización 

como CARECEN me he dado cuenta de 

verdad cuanto hace falta representación 

legal para personas de bajos recursos. 

Muchos casos toman tiempo, y la 

organización necesita muchos más 

abogados para que se puedan tomar 

mayor cantidad de casos. Es tanta la 

demanda que en muchas ocasiones 

tenemos que referir a los clientes con 

abogados privados, pero tristemente es 

difícil para ellos ya que los servicios en 

esas oficinas tienen un alto costo. 

Pero esto no es todo ella sueña hacer 

mucho mas, Cindy nos dice: Mi próxima 

meta es asistir a la escuela de leyes para 

aprender como servir mejor a mi 

comunidad. Soy feliz trabajando junto a 

ellos y apoyándolos en todo lo que puedo. 

Cuando le preguntamos, ¿Cuáles han 

sido los mayores obstáculos en tu vida? 

ella nos contesto: Desde mi niñez he 

enfrentado obstáculos muy personales, 

pero nada comparado con lo que mis 

clientes han tenido que enfrentar. A veces 

salgo de trabajar muy frustrada porque 

pienso en toda la injusticia por la que han 

pasado ellos. Quisiera tomar el tiempo 

para conocerlos y escuchar sus historias. 

Muchos están dispuestos a compartirlas, 

pero casi nunca hay tiempo porque 

siempre hay demasiado trabajo. Sin 

embargo, sé que todos los clientes tienen 

una historia y han tenido que enfrentar 

muchos obstáculos para llegar a donde 

están, y esto me motiva a mantenerme 

dedicada a mi trabajo. 

Cuando le preguntamos a Cindy ¿Quién 

o qué te ha inspirado en tu 

v i d a o c a r r e r a ? 

Ella muy segura nos expreso: 

Inmigrantes como mis clientes 

que están dispuestos a 

arriesgar su vida y a enfrentar 

discriminación para que su 

familia salga adelante son una 

inspiración enorme. Cada día mis clientes 

me recuerdan a mi mamá. Ella es mi 

mayor inspiración. Decidió venir a 

los Estados Unidos para que yo tenga un 

futuro mejor. Me crió sola. Cuando era 

pequeña me preguntaba a mi misma 

porque mi madre trabajaba tanto. 

La extrañaba y quería que pasara 

más tiempo conmigo. Ahora que soy 

mayor entiendo todo el esfuerzo. 

Lo hacía para que nunca nos faltara nada 

ni a mi hermano ni a mí, por lo cual estoy 

muy agradecida. 

El apoyo de la familia nos muestra una 

vez mas lo importante que es en todo, 

Cindy aclara: Cuando fui a la universidad 

por suerte sólo tenía que pagar un tercio 

del alojamiento y mis libros. Para que no 

tuviera que sacar préstamos, mi mamá 

me ayudo con estos gastos hasta que yo 

pudiera conseguir un trabajo. Ella 

siempre me ha apoyado, y no quiero más 

que merecer su orgullo. Soy quien soy 

gracias a ella, y le agradezco mucho a mi 

abuelita por haberme dado a una madre 

tan determinada a sacar sus hijos 

adelante. Mi abuelita también crió a sus 

ocho hijos sola, y estoy orgullosa de ser 

parte de una familia llena de mujeres 

fuertes e independientes. 

Por ultimo Cindy nos regala un consejo: 

Es importante permanecer unidos y 

reconocer que aunque hayan diferencias 

entre cada persona, todos merecemos 

los mismos derechos. Todos merecemos 

la oportunidad a una vida mejor. 

A la comunidad quiero decirle que nunca 

se den por vencidos, que sigan luchando 

por sus derechos, y que no subestimen 

a las mujeres, que tienen mucho que 

ofrecer a la lucha. Y por ultimo solo tres 

cosas: Fé, fortaleza, y creer en uno 

mismo. Es todo lo que se necesita para 

lograr lo que nos proponemos. Y pensar 

siempre que no hay imposibles. 

En conclusión, para Paloma Revista es 

una alegría felicitar a Cindy por su gran 

esfuerzo, su gran corazón y su humildad, 

si recordamos todos sus logros de gran 

beneficio al prójimo, ella es un valioso

We started asking about her childhood 

Cindy told us: I remember my mother 

taught me to read when I was very young. 

She always took the time to read with me 

at night before bed. She never showed 

how tired she was after working long 

hours. She has always been my super 

mom. My mother's name is Edith Garcia, 

and my brother Anthony Ramirez. My 

s t e pf ather i s C es a r G arcia. 

Cindy attended Cherrylee Elementary 

School and Mission Bell Elementary 

School, her middle school years in Mira 

Loma Middle School, her high school 

years in Jurupa Valley High School. She 

continued her studies at the University 

o f C a l i f o r n i a , L o s A n g e l e s . 

She stands out for her community 

service and support to our community, 

in her words: In 2012 I was part of 

AmeriCorps, a program that provides 

community service nationwide. 

I participated in the city of Los Angeles, 

California, in the organization, Central 

American Resource Center-Los Angeles, 

known by its acronym CARECEN-LA. It is a 

nonprofit organization 

that initially offered 

s e r v i c e s 

only to Salvadorans 

fleeing civil war in 

their country, but 

Faith, strength, and believing 

in yourself. It is all that is 

needed to achieve what we 

set out. And always think 

that nothing is impossible.

community. When I finished my service 

with AmeriCorps in 2013, CARECEN-LA. 

offered me a permanent position as a 

paralegal. Last year I applied for my 

accreditation to represent our clients in 

their interviews before immigration 

officers, and my application was 

approved. Now I work as a CARECEN-LA 

accredited representative. In the years 

that I have worked for the organization I 

learned a lot about immigration, I have 

represented clients who are applying for 

residency and citizenship before 

immigration officers, and I have taken 

charge of cases that require a provisional 

pardon for people who have to return to 

their home country to attend their residency 

interview so that they do not have 

to be out of the country for many years. 

She draws our attention as she loves to 

help people in their work, she explains: 

Working for an organization like 

CARECEN-LA, I really noticed how much 

there truly is a need for affordable legal 

representation. Many cases take time, 

and the organization needs many more 

lawyers so they can take more of these 

cases. Such is the demand that many 

times we have to refer clients to private 

lawyers, but sadly it is difficult for clients 

because services in those offices 

h a v e a h i g h c o s t . 

But that's not all, she dreams to do much 

more, Cindy says: My next goal is to 

attend law school to learn how to better 

serve my community. I am happy working 

with them and supporting them 

i n e v e r y t h i n g I c a n . 

When asked, What were the 

bi gest obstacles in your life? she 

answered: Since my childhood I have 

faced very personal obstacles, but 

nothing compared to what my clients 

have faced. Sometimes I leave work 

very frustrated because I think of all 

the injustice that they have passed. I 

would like to take the time to meet them 

and hear their stories. Many are willing to 

share, but we rarely have time to do that 

because there is always too much work. 

However, I know that all clients have a 

history and have had to face many 

obstacles to get where they are, and 

this motivates me to stay dedicated to 

my work. When we asked Cindy: Who or 

what inspired you in your life or career?

expressed to us: 

Immigrants like my 

clients who are willing to 

risk their lives and face 

discrimination in order 

for their family to move 

forward are a huge 

inspiration. Every day my clients remind 

me of my mom. She is my greatest 

inspiration. She decided to come to the 

United States for me to have a better 

future. She raised me alone. When I was 

little I asked myself why my mother 

worked so much. I missed her and 

wanted her to spend more time with me. 

Now that I'm older I understand all the 

effort. She did it so that my brother and I 

never lacked anything, for which I am 

grateful. The support of family shows us 

once more how important it is in 

everything, Cindy explains: When I went 

to college luckily I only had to pay one 

third of the housing and my books. 

So I did not have to take out loans, my 

mom helped me with these expenses 

until I could get a job. She has always 

supported me, and I do not want 

anything more than to make her proud. 

I am who I am because of her, and I am 

very grateful to my grandmother for 

giving me such a mother determined to 

get her children ahead. My grandmother 

also raised her eight children alone, and 

I'm proud to be part of a family full of 

s t r o n g , i n d e p e n d e n t w o m e n . 

Cindy finally gives us a tip: It is important 

to stand together and recognize that 

even if there are differences between all 

of us, we all deserve the same rights. 

We all deserve a chance at a better life. 

To the community I want to tell you never 

give up, to continue fighting for your 

rights, and not to underestimate women, 

who have much to offer to the fight. 

And lastly only three things: faith, 

strength, and believing in yourself. 

It is all that is needed to achieve 

w h a t w e s e t o u t . 

In conclusion, Paloma Magazine is a joy 

to congratulate Cindy for her hard work, 

her big heart and her humility, if we 

remember all achievements of great 

benefit to others, it is a valuable positive

Basílica de Santa María Novella 

(ITALIA) 

Es una de las iglesias más importantes 

de la ciudad italiana de Florencia, y se 

encuentra situada en el noroeste de la 

parte antigua de la ciudad, en la plaza 

del mismo nombre y próxima a 

la estación de ferrocarril. En el siglo 

IX existía un pequeño oratorio dedicado 

a Santa María de la Viña, y sobre él se 

levantó, en 1049, la iglesia de Santa 

María Novella, concedida, en 1221, 

a doce frailes dominicos, quienes, 

guiados por Fray Giovanni da 

Salerno habían llegado a la ciudad

La Misión de los Seglares 

-El otro día estábamos en familia 

platicando de algo que 

seguramente alguna vez tú te 

habrás preguntado: ¿Qué es lo 

que Dios espera de nosotros, qué 

es lo que quiere que hagamos en 

la vida? Todos los hombres 

tenemos una misión en la vida, es 

decir, algo especial que hacer, algo 

para lo que Dios nos ha creado. 

¿QUIÉNES SOMOS 

LOS SEGLARES? 

-Todos los hombres y mujeres que 

somos parte de la Iglesia Católica 

y que no somos sacerdotes o 

religiosas, nos llamamos 

SEGLARES¨. 

-Los seglares somos entonces 

TODOS: hombres y mujeres, 

ancianos, jóvenes y niños, gente 

de diferentes oficios: campesinos, 

obreros, empresarios, maestros; 

ricos y pobres, sanos y enfermos. 

-En este folleto queremos platicar 

contigo: ¿Qué es lo que Dios 

quiere que hagamos los seglares? 

¿Qué es lo que Dios quiere que 

hagas tú? 

¿QUÉ NOS DIJO JESÚS A LOS 

SEGLARES? 

-Un día subió Jesús, a un monte 

seguido de mucha gente. Una vez 

arriba, todos lo rodearon para 

escucharle. Estaba allí gente de 

toda clase: niños, jóvenes, 

ancianos, pescadores, artesanos, 

ganaderos; también había mujeres 

de diferentes edades y condición. 

-Entonces Jesús les dijo:- Esto es 

lo que Jesús nos pide a todos los 

seglares: que tratemos de ser lo 

más perfectos posibles, que 

seamos lo más buenos que 

podamos, que seamos. 

-En fin, sería muy difícil explicar 

perfectamente cómo ser santo, 

sin embargo, Jesús nos lo explicó 

muy sencillamente usando 

solamente dos frases: 

AMARÁS A DIOS SOBRE TODAS LAS 

COSAS Y A TU PRÓJIMO COMO A TI 

MISMO¨.EL TRABAJO ES UN MEDIO 

PARA SANTIFICARSE 

-Los seglares católicos deben tratar 

de ser santos siguiendo el ejemplo 

de Jesús: 

-Jesús, desde muy pequeño, 

comenzó a ayudar a su padre 

José en la carpintería. 

-Jesús quiso dar a los cristianos 

normales, que viven en el mundo 

dedicados a sus oficios y trabajos 

diferentes, una de las lecciones 

más importantes de su vida: 

QUE EL TRABAJO TIENE UN GRAN 

VALOR PARA HACERNOS SANTOS 

Y PARA SANTIFICAR A LOS DEMÁS. 

-¡Dios quiere que tú seas santo 

en tu trabajo! Pero, ¿Cómo? 

Haciéndolo lo mejor posible, 

haciéndolo de buena gana, 

haciéndolo sobretodo por amor a 

Dios y ayudando a tus hermanos. 

-De hoy en adelante, antes de 

empezar tu chamba del día, piensa: 

Dios mío, haré este trabajo porque 

te amo¨. Sí, Jesús quiere que 

compartas todas esas cosas que 

has aprendido sobre tu religión y 

todas esas cosas que puedes leer 

en el evangelio, con otras 

personas; que las enseñes a tu 

familia, a tus amigos, a tus 

compañeros de trabajo. 

-Que no te dé pena o miedo hablar 

de Jesús a los demás; lo más 

hermoso que puedes hacer en la 

vida es ayudar a otras personas a 

acercarse a Dios nuestro Señor, 

ayudarles a conocer a Jesús y el 

camino que Él nos ha dejado para 

llegar al cielo. 

PROPÓSITO DEL MES: 

-Este mes has un BALANCE 

todas las noches: 

+¿Este día he tratado de ser 

santo? ¿Este día he hecho todo 

por amor a Dios? 

+¿Se lo he ofrecido todo a Él: 

mi trabajo, mi descanso, lo que me 

gusta hacer y lo que no me gusta 

tanto? 

+¿Qué es lo que no me deja ser 

más perfecto? ¿Cómo puedo 

hacer para cambiarlo? 

+¿He amado hoy a mis 

hermanos? ¿Los he tratado bien, 

los he ayudado? 

+¿Les he hablado a mis hijos, a mi 

esposo/a, a mis amigos, a mis 

compañeros de trabajo, de Dios, de 

Jesús, de lo que está bien y lo que 

está mal? Que no te de vergüenza.

about something as a family 

surely you've asked yourself: 

What God expects of us, what he 

want us to do in life? All men have 

a mission in life, that is, to do 

something special, something for 

which God created us. 

WHO ARE THE SECULARS? 

All men and women who are part 

of the Catholic Church and that are 

not priests or religious, we’re 

called 

SECULARS. 

-The Seculars then are all men 

and women, the elderly, youth 

and children, people of different 

occupations: farmers, workers, 

business people, teachers; rich 

and poor, healthy and sick. 

'In this brochure we want to talk 

to you: What is it that God wants 

us to do the seculars? 

What is it that God wants 

you to do you? 

WHAT DOES JESUS 

SAY TO SECULARS? 

One day Jesus went up a 

mountain followed by many 

people. Once up, they all 

surrounded him to hear him. 

There was all sorts of people: 

children, youth, seniors, 

fishermen, craftsmen, farmers; 

there were women of different 

ages and condition. Then Jesus 

said to them: 

-This is what Jesus asks us all 

secular people: that we try to be 

as perfect possible, that we are as 

good as we can be, to be holy "In 

short, it would be very difficult to 

explain exactly how to be holy, 

but Jesus explained it very simply 

using only two sentences: 

Love God above all things 

and your neighbor as yourself. 

Work is a mean to sanctify 

-The Catholic seculars must strive 

to be saints following the example 

of Jesus: 

Jesus, very young, began 

helping his father Joseph in 

carpentry. 

Jesus wanted to give ordinary 

Christians living in the world 

dedicated to their trades and 

different jobs, one of the most 

important lessons of his life: 

That work is very valuable to make 

us holy and to sanctify others. 

God wants you to be holy in your 

work. 

But How? Doing the best, doing 

it willingly, making it especially 

for love of God and helping your 

brothers. 

-From now on, before you start 

your day, think: My God, I do this 

job because I love you. Yes, 

Jesus wants you to share all 

those things you have learned 

about your religion and all those 

things that you can read in the 

Gospel, with others; that teach 

your family, your friends, 

your co-workers. 

That does not give you grief or 

fear to speak of Jesus to others; 

the most beautiful thing you can 

do in life is to help people come 

closer to God our Lord, help them 

know Jesus and the way He has 

left us for heaven. 

PURPOSE OF THE MONTH: 

-this Month you have a balance 

every night: 

+ This day have I tried to be 

holy? This day have I done 

everything for the love of God? 

+ Can I have offered everything 

to Him: my job, my rest, what I 

like and what I do not like so 

much? 

+ What is it that will not let me 

be more perfect? What can I do 

to change it? 

+ Have I loved my brothers 

today? Have I been kind, helped? 

+ Have I talked to my children, 

my husband / wife, my friends, 

my colleagues, of God, of Jesus, 

of what is right and what is 

wrong? Do not be ashamed.

Porque hablar de esto, simplemente 

porque es algo que va a pasar de seguro 

a todos y no sabemos cuando, y lo mejor es 

no tener miedo y estar preparados con el 

testamento, invertir en la casa final a 

nuestro gusto, bueno es solo un consejo. 

Testamento acto jurídico, unilateral (porque 

solo una persona debe hacerlo), individual 

(porque no se puede realizar en grupo, solo 

una persona puede decidir a quien le hereda), 

personalísimo (porque no puede realizarlo un 

apoderado o representante, necesariamente tiene que 

asistir ante el notario el testador), libre (porque no es válido 

si existe alguna violencia o presión en contra del testador), solemne 

(porque se hace ante un fedatario que se asegura de la identidad 

de la persona y se cerciora de que no existe presión), revocable 

(porque el testador lo puede modificar tantas veces lo considere 

conveniente), mediante el cual quien lo realiza dispone, para 

después de su muerte de lo que haya de hacerse de sus bienes y 

derechos transmisibles, y expresa su voluntad sobre todo aquello 

que, sin tener carácter patrimonial, pueda ordenar, 

de acuerdo con la Ley. 

Testamento Abierto: El testador manifiesta su última voluntad en 

presencia de las personas que deben autorizar el acto, quedando 

éstas enteradas de su contenido. 

Testamento Cerrado: El que testador, sin revelar su última 

voluntad declara que se haya contenido en el pliego que presenta 

a las personas que han de autorizar el acto. 

Testamento Común: El que la ley regula para que sea otorgado 

en circunstanias normales y con formalidades de idéntico carácter. 

Testamento Hecho en País Extranjero: El otorgado fuera del 

territorio de la nación del testador, bien con arreglo a las leyes 

del lugar en que lo otorgue, bien ante un agente diplomático o 

consular de su país. 

Testamento marítimo: El hecho a bordo de un buque de guerra o 

un buque mercante o con ocasión de naufragio. El otorgado con 

menores solemnidades que el ordinario por la persona que se haya 

a bordo de una nave en viaje. 

Testamento especial: El otorgado por cualquiera de las personas 

que vayan en un buque. La participación en una guerra configura 

circunstancias especiales que en cierta medida pueden equiparse 

con las que pueden derivar de un viaje por el mar. La navegación 

en alta mar determina muchas veces la imposibilidad de recurrir 

a las formas contempladas por la ley como normales para la 

expresión de la última voluntad. La Ley facilita también el acto 

de testamento a quienes se encuentran en un viaje por mar y 

determina a si mismo su capacidad de caducidad. 

Testamento Militar: Es el otorgado en tiempo de guerra por los 

militares en campaña, voluntarios, rehenes y prisioneros. 

Testamento Ológrafo: Es el escrito de puño y letra del testador 

Testamento Privado: Es el en que el testador realiza el acto sin 

asistencia de personal revestido de carácter oficial ni testigos. 

Testamento Público: Es el que la declaración de voluntad 

ha sido hecha ante un Notario. 

Ventajas: 

1.Usted puede cambiar en vida su testamento y actualizarlo 

a su conveniencia, siendo vigente el último firmado y atestado. 

2. Los bienes que se transfieren a un cónyuge (si es ciudadano de 

EE UU) o a organizaciones caritativas no están sujetos a impuestos 

sobre la herencia. Contrario a la creencia popular, si usted muere 

sin testamento, no todo pasa automáticamente al estado. 

3. Puede nombrar un tutor un familiar o persona de confianza, 

si tiene hijos menores de edad, para que se haga cargo de ellos. 

Desventajas 

1. Si muere sin un testamento (también conocido como intestato), 

la ley testamentaria de California determinará los beneficiarios 

de su caudal hereditario. 

2. El Estado de California es el beneficiario de su caudal hereditario 

si usted muere intestato (y su cónyuge o compañero doméstico 

fallecido) y usted no tiene parientes vivos. 

3. Las desventajas del proceso de la corte testamentaria es que es 

público: las disposiciones de su testamento y el valor de sus bienes 

pasan a ser información disponible al público. Además, debido a 

que los honorarios del abogado y las comisiones del ejecutor están 

determinados por ley, los gastos pueden ser mayores que el costo 

de un caudal hereditario comparable administrado y distribuido 

conforme a un fideicomiso vital. 

Fideicomiso: De inversión: Que tiene por finalidad la inversión 

de recursos financieros, fondos, negocios, De Garantía: 

Que se utiliza para garantizar algún tipo de pago o cláusula 

de cumplimiento. Administrativo: Se utiliza para ceder la 

administración personal a alguna persona natural o jurídica

Capítulo 11 

La vecina, la del esposo borracho

Me acuerdo, de vez en cuando, de aquella 

vecina, la de los cinco niños y el esposo borracho. 

En aquel entonces, creo que vivíamos por la Acosta 

Plaza, o por la Williams, aunque en otras ocasiones 

con gran astucia la recuerdo por la Sanborn, o la Del 

Monte, bueno, me equivoco, ahora la recuerdo bien, 

ella vivía por Paseo Grande. 

La señora estaba mayor, y yo estaba en quinto 

grado, su hijo, el de cómo de mi edad era mi amigo. 

De la señora, me acuerdo que siempre llevaba ropa 

vieja; unas playeras desgastadas como las que te 

regalan en festivales o en la escuela, también llevaba 

unos pans viejos y tenis blancos como de enfermera. 

Su pelo era canoso, siempre lo llevaba en una colita 

deshecha, eso si, a rostro cansando y algo 

desgastado nunca le faltó una sonrisa. Me acuerdo, 

como una de los pocas mañanas que pasé por su 

hijo para ir a la escuela, ella me invitó a pasar a su 

casa. En eso, ella me ofreció un taco de papas 

guisadas; la tortilla hecha a mano cobijando el rico 

sazón de las papas. También por la casa había toda 

esa otra comida que llevaba nombres de otras 

personas y no el de los cinco niños, después me 

enteré que era la comida de los niños que cuidaba. 

La casa era humilde, las cobijas hechas en 

camas a falta de colchones, el comedor de sillas de 

plástico, de esas blancas, como las que van sobre el 

pasto o asfalto en días de sol. Ella nunca salía de la 

casa, pues todos sabíamos que ella no podía, su hijo 

nunca nos lo dijo pero según los chismes, sabíamos 

que una vez que la señora salió a tirar la basura 

(la cual estaba como a veinte pies de su casa) su 

esposo se fue detrás de ella y la metió de los pelos. 

No sé si esto fue realidad pero los chismes de la 

cuadra así lo decían. Lo que sí sé, fue de su falta de 

dinero y esposo, recuerdo que de los casi cinco años 

que vivimos ahí, sólo vi al padre unas cuantas veces, 

de él recuerdo la alacena llena de vasos con el 

logotipo “Presidente” ya que mi amigo nos lo enseñó 

con orgullo, diciendo miren, todos los vasos que tiene 

mi padre, como para comprobar que sí tenía padre 

chingón, pues claro está, el señor había podido 

tomarse todo eso. Ahora que lo pienso bien, ya con 

una mirada desde el presente, la señora cuidaba a 

muchos niños, y sólo así logró comprarle lo que pudo 

a sus hijos, a pesar de sus circunstancias. Me 

acuerdo, cómo la mañana después de Santa Claus, 

todos los de la cuadra salimos a la cancha de 

basquetbol para presumir regalos. Recuerdo, que el 

niño de la señora, intentaba presumir su reloj de 

plástico con calculadora y un suéter negro, usado, de 

rayas amarillas, rojas y anaranjadas, no le hicimos 

mucho caso, pues todos los demás presumíamos 

carritos de control remoto, videojuegos nuevos, 

zapatos y ropa. El regalo de mi amigo tenía mucho 

valor, tenía mucha más importancia, pues fue del 

mérito de su madre, fue a pesar de su padre, a pesar 

de no estar, creo que estaba en la cárcel por algo 

que había hecho. 

Las pocas veces que el padre sí estuvo en la 

casa, el humor de mi amigo cambiaba, siempre 

estaba malhumorado, siempre tenía como un coraje. 

Una vez nos llegó a decir que él no le tenía miedo a 

su padre y que hasta él le podía ganar a pelear, nos 

lo comprobó diciéndonos que en una ocasión cuando 

su padre estaba tomado, intentó pegarle a su madre, 

y mi amigo, sin pensarlo se le lanzó y lo golpeó hasta 

que su padre se calmó. Quizá, esa fue la razón por la 

cual el padre dejó de estar. Con el tiempo, después 

de la falta del padre, la señora se fue haciendo de 

cosas para sus hijos, y más que nada para ella 

misma, y si mal no me recuerdo, formalizó su trabajo 

de cuidar niños, sacó licencia para hacerlo, con el 

tiempo logró comprar su casa, amplió su negocio de 

niñera, logró salir adelante. 

Viéndolo desde ahora, cínicamente, desde el 

principio su esposo le enseñó a ser niñera al tener 

que cuidar de un hombre-niño, caprichoso. Tenía que 

acoplarse a las necesidades del hombre-niño, pues 

para no hacerlo enojar, pues para no desagradarle el 

día; pero una madre, o más que nada una mujer 

¿hasta cuándo permite esto? ¿Hasta cuándo se vale 

aguantarle a un hombre, todas sus faltas?, 

¿hasta que punto dice una mujer basta ya, esto ya no 

puede ser así?, ¿será hasta el día que pueda ver e 

imaginarse que todo puede ser de otra manera? 

Y se diga, eso. Pero sin más no poder imaginarse lo 

antes dicho, nunca podrá cambiarlo. 

Si el niño de quinto grado con la experiencia 

de casi treinta, podría haberle dicho algo a la vecina, 

la del esposo borracho le hubiese dicho lo siguiente: 

en México, en las partes del país donde abunda la 

falta de educación y dinero, el maltrato a la mujer 

suele ser más común, y por lo tanto la mujer se 

aguanta. Pero aquí en este país, a las niñas se les 

enseña que son personas, que pueden pensar, sin 

miedo, y pueden ser y hacer a su gusto porque 

también pueden soñar, porque también pueden ser 

líderes, pueden tomar las riendas de sus vidas y la de 

sus seres queridos, porque aquí, en este país, la 

mujer ya no es sombra del esposo, ya no sólo agacha 

la cabeza ante el hombre, no espera a que el hombre 

de la casa le diga, “ten esto para la casa” después de 

él haberse paseado, haberse ido a comer su plato de 

caldo de camarones y unas cuantas cervezas, en uno 

de los tantos restaurantes mexicanos, a solas, sin su 

familia, mientras la señora de la casa lo espera, pues 

para ver qué es lo que van a hacer cuando él regrese, 

sabiendo ella, desde un principio lo que ella tiene 

qué hacer como mujer, como madre, para así 

mantener su propia dignidad, así como logró hacerlo 

la vecina, la del esposo borracho…….

Chapter 11 

My neighbor, the one with 

the drunken husband

I remember, from time to time, that neighbor, 

with five children and a drunken husband. I think 

she lived on Acosta Plaza, or Williams, although 

sometimes I remember it took place on Sanborn, 

or Del Monte, no, wait, now I remember well, 

she lived near Paseo Grande. 

The lady was older, at that time I was in fifth 

grade and her son who was my friend was about my 

age. I remember she always wore old clothes; worn 

out t-shirts like the ones given at festivals or at 

school. She also wore white sneakers and old 

sweatpants. 


Her gray hair was always 

worn in a messy ponytail; her tired 

and somewhat worn-out face never 

lacked a smile. I remember, that 

one of the few mornings I passed 

by to get her son to walk to school; 

she invited me into her home. She 

offered me a taco of potato hash; 

I remember her handmade tortillas, 

the flavor of the potatoes, but I also 

remember all of that other food 

around the kitchen, with names of 

other people and not of her five 

children, it was the food for the 

children she cared for. I remember 

the humble house, blankets made 

into beds in the absence of mattress 

beds, white plastic chairs as 

dinning room chairs, like the ones 

that go on the grass or asphalt on 

sunny days. I remember that she 

never left the house, because we 

all knew that she was not allowed. 

Her son never told us, but 

according to gossip, once the lady 

went out to take the trash out 

(which was about twenty feet from 

her house) and soon after her 

husband dragged her by the hair 

back into the house. Actually, I do 

not know if this was true or mere 

gossip, but I do know there was lack 

of money and a father. I remember 

that in the almost five years we 

lived there, I only saw the father a 

few times. I also remember the 

cupboard full of glasses with the 

logo "Presidente" that my friend 

showed us with pride, those were 

his father’s glasses from drinking 

bottles of brandy. Now that I think 

about it today, the lady took care of 

many children, and that was the 

only way she could manage to care 

for her children, despite her 

circumstances. I remember, how 

the morning after Christmas, the 

entire block went out to the 

basketball court to show of their 

gifts. I remember, the son of the 

lady trying to show off his plastic 

watch with a calculator and a used 

black sweater with yellow, red and 

orange stripes. I remember we did 

not pay much attention to him, 

because all of the other boys were 

to busy showing of remote control 

cars, new videogames, shoes and 

clothes. Now that I think about it, 

that gift from my friend must have 

been meaningful to him and was 

much more important as it was a 

symbol of his mother’s merit, as she 

was able to provide in spite of her 

father. 

The few times that the father 

was home, my friend’s house 

lacked peace, lacked smiles, my 

friend's mood changed, he was 

always grumpy. Once he told us he 

was not afraid of his father and that 

told us that on one occasion when 

his father was drunk, he tried to hit 

her mother, and my friend, without 

even thinking about it launched at 

hit until his father calmed down. 

Perhaps that was the reason why 

the father was no longer around; 

some believed he was in jail. 

Eventually, after the failure of the 

father, the lady began to take 

charge of her life and did things for 

her children, and most of all for herself. 

She formalized her daycare job 

by getting her license to do so, and 

in time she managed to buy a 

house, expand her business, and 

managed to get by. 

Thinking about this now, 

from a cynical perspective, from the 

beginning her husband taught her 

how to be nanny. She had to care 

for a stubborn man-child. She 

to tend to the needs of a 

man-child, so he would not get 

angry; but a mother, or a woman for 

how long can she allow this to happen? 

How long will she put up with 

a man, and all of his faults?, to 

what extent does a women say 

enough is enough, this can no 

longer be?, it will be until the day 

she can see and imagine that 

everything can be otherwise? And 

she says to herself, all this has to 

be otherwise. But those who could 

not imagine this will never be able 

to change this situation. 

If the fifth grader with the 

experience of an almost thirty year 

old, could have said something to 

the neighbor, the one with the 

drunken husband, then I would 

have told her the following: in 

Mexico, in parts of the country were 

the lack of education and money 

abounds, the abuse of women 

tends to be common, and therefore 

woman is taught to endure. But 

here in this country, girls are taught 

that they are people, who can think, 

without fear, and can be and do as 

they please, and that they can 

dream, they can be leaders who 

take charge of their lives and their 

loved ones, because here in this 

country, women are no longer the 

shadow of their husbands, or must 

bow her head to the man, waiting 

for her man of the house to tell her, 

"keep this for the house" after he 

has gone to eat a bowl of shrimp 

broth and a few beers in one of the 

many Mexican restaurants, alone, 

without his family, while the lady of 

the house patiently waits for him to 

see what she must do next, while 

knowing from the beginning what 

she has to do as a woman, as a 

mother, in order to maintain their 

dignity and managed to do what the 

neighbor with the drunken husband

Como es común, tratamos de estar siempre 

a la moda usando los colores, estilos, 

formas y texturas que recién salen al 

mercado, o bien, según la temporada en la 

que nos encontremos. Y uno de los estilos 

más usados por las mujeres son los zapatos 

de tacón alto. Sean estos descubiertos o 

cerrados, siempre brindan un toque de 

elegancia a todas nuestras prendas y 

siempre hay un par para cada ocasión.

reacción en cadena, porque la posición 

del pie hace que el apoyo de la rodilla se 

corra hacia atrás y para compensar la mala 

posición, la persona dobla la rodilla 

produciendo una flexión de cadera que 

puede producir dolor. 

–Por cada 5 centímetros de tacón que 

se suman, hay unos 8 kilos que se suman 

a la presión que sufre tu pie. 

Un consejo para que el uso de tacos altos 

no sea tan doloroso, busca aquellos que 

sean altos pero que también sean un poco 

anchos, porque esto evitará que las 

articulaciones estén forzadas. 

Cuando vayas de compras, no dudes 

en probártelos todas las veces que sea 

necesario para asegurarte que no 

te dañaran tanto.
