CLASS DEFINITIONS Entries may be in any class or category, but to qualify as British Columbia Photographer of the Year, the maker’s four accepted entries must be in two or more categories. Commercial Category: Portrait Category: General Category: 1. Architecture 5. Portrait of a Woman 14. Pictorial 2. Fashion 6. Portrait of a Man 15. Unclassified 3. Illustration 7. Portrait of a Child 16. Animals - Wild or Domestic 4. Industrial 8. Portrait - 1 or 2 persons 17. Press 9. Group - 3 or more persons 18. Fine Art 10. Wedding Portrait -1 or 2 persons 19. Freestyle 11. Wedding Group -3 or more 23. Editorial 12. Figure Study 13. Photojournalistic The following definitions of various classes are for the guidance of photographer and judge alike. Entrants are warned that the Image Salon Committee will not undertake to reclassify images which are obviously misdirected. In Classes 1 - 18, image enhancements and manipulations must be done by the maker or under the direction of the maker. COMMERCIAL CATEGORY Architecture (Class 1) More than an image of a building, an architectural photograph successfully defines and/or portrays outstanding architectural features of the building by the clever use of point of view, perspective, scale and light. Fashion (Class 2) Through expert use of lighting, props, posing, a fashion image should show the basic flow and shape of a garment in such a way as to excite and interest the viewer. Illustration (Class 3) An illustration is an image which shows a product in an attractive and appetizing way to stimulate interest and purchasing appeal or clearly portrays a message in a clever or original way. Industrial (Class 4) A successful industrial image draws the viewer’s attention to an industrial process or product photographed under industrial conditions. Many industrial images make use of scientific and research facilities which can have a great bearing on the impact of the image. PORTRAIT CATEGORY Portrait (Classes 5, 6, 7, 8) A good portrait should portray the subject in such a way as to reflect the appearance and/or personality of the subject and the style and technique of the photographer, whether traditional or contemporary, either in the studio or a natural environment. May feature 1 or 2 persons. Group Portrait (Class 9) is the same but with 3 or more persons. Wedding (Class 10) A portrait, black & white or colour, depicting people or events involving a wedding. May feature 1 or 2 persons. Wedding Group (Class 11) is the same as Wedding (Class 10) but with 3 or more persons. Figure Study (Class 12) A class for black and white or colour images of nude figures. Images will be judged as portraits of the human body. Photojournalistic Wedding (Class 13) The image must be casual in nature and require the photographer to have been in the right place at the right time to capture a moment of interest, emotion and/or action with neither posing nor prompting. No obviously staged or posed images will be accepted. Traditional considerations (posing, lighting and composition) are secondary to interest, emotion and/or action. Exposure, however, must still be correct.
GENERAL CATEGORY Pictorial (Class 14) A fine scenic image that illustrates the natural and man-made geographical features relating to our environment. Landscapes, seascapes, mountains and aerials are acceptable. Successful images MUST be a cut above ordinary scenic images. Unclassified (Class 15) Images which defy classification into any of the other categories, including abstracts and special manipulations. (Not all special effect images must go into this class. A posterized industrial photo, if recognizable as industrial, should be entered in Industrial, not Unclassified. Animals (Class 16) A mixed class covering wild animals photographed in their natural habitat and domestic animals photographed in a location of the photographer’s choosing (in-studio or on-location). Press (Class 17) Press images will be judged less on technical excellence and more on viewer impact. Images should evoke direct viewer response because of the emotional, humourous or unusual nature of the subject matter. No alteration, manipulation or staged images allowed in this class. Basic colour and brightness adjustments, cropping, dodging and burning-in are allowed. Fine Art (Class 18) Unusual images, individual images or a series of images on one entry. Conventional beauty, formal design and familiar subjects are often not components of fine art images and can include: classic B&W scenes, painterly effects, soft focus, journalistic, bizarre images and other unconventional approaches. Free Style (Class 19) A complete image that makes use of, and builds on, photographic imagery. While another may produce components of the image, the entrant is responsible for all elements of the “post-image” production. The obvious strength of the composition is based on what is created from the components. The image is still recognizable as a photograph following normal conventions of light, shading, perspective etc. Entrants may declare themselves as the maker of all image components by placing the bracketed capital letter (M) at the end of the image title. Editorial (Class 23) Depicting lifestyle or business environments and their story-telling activities, these images typically accompany an article or caption description. In successfully invoking a viewer’s interest, these featureoriented photographs include executive portraiture, annual reports, business activities in general, and may present images of an emotional, humorous or unusual nature. The time of your email will be on the email itself which will serve to qualify your digital submission - do NOT leave emailing your images to the last minute as there may be server issues which will prevent your images from arriving on time.
