The Society of Fire Protection Engineers was established in 1950 and incorporated as in independent<br />

organization in 1971. It is the professional society representing those practicing the field of fire protection<br />

engineering. The Society has approximately 4500 members in the United States and abroad, and 57<br />

regional chapters. The purpose of the Society is to advance the science and practice of fire protection<br />

engineering and its allied fields, to maintain a high ethical standard among its members and to foster<br />

fire protection engineering education.<br />

IAFSS was founded with the primary objective of encouraging research into the science of preventing<br />

and mitigating the adverse effects of fires and of providing a forum for presenting the results of such<br />

research. The International Association for Fire <strong>Safety</strong> Science perceives its role to lie in the scientific<br />

be they concerned with application or with the sciences that are fundamental to our interests in fire. It<br />

will seek to promote high standards, to encourage and stimulate scientists to address fire problems, to<br />

provide the necessary scientific foundations and means to facilitate applications aimed at reducing life<br />

and property loss.<br />

ITA-COSUF the Centre of Excellence for world-wide exchange of information and know-how<br />

regarding safety and security of underground facilities.<br />

The mission of the international nonprofit NFPA, established in 1896, is to reduce the worldwide burden<br />

of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by providing and advocating consensus codes and<br />

standards, research, training, and education. The world's leading advocate of fire prevention and an<br />

authoritative source on public safety, NFPA develops, publishes, and disseminates more than 300 consensus<br />

codes and standards intended to minimize the possibility and effects of fire and other risks. NFPA<br />

membership totals more than 81,000 individuals around the world and more than 80 national trade and<br />

professional organizations.<br />

The FDNY Foundation is the official 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to benefit the New York City Fire<br />

Department. The funds raised assist the FDNY in its mission to prevent and respond to fires, medical<br />

emergencies, disasters and terrorist acts, protecting the lives and property of residents and visitors in<br />

New York City. The FDNY Foundation funds programs to help meet the Department's training, equipment,<br />

and education needs.<br />
