Chairman’s Rumination
Dear Fellow Rolls-Royce and Bentley Enthusiasts
My thanks and congratulations go out to all in the RROC–San Diego
Region. Your attendance at our meets this year has been very strong
and consequently supportive of the club. March included our annual
gathering in the desert experienced by 27 of our members and
guests in addition to approximately 45 members from the Southern
Janice & Dennis Eickhoff
California Region. As is typical of the desert, the setting was idyllic,
the food exquisite and the activities superb. A hearty thank you to the So Cal Region for organizing
this fun event. While shopping typically occupies very little of my waking hours, this up close and
personal interaction with the shopping spree on El Paseo answered a nagging question that seemed to
have no answer! For many months I have been stumped by the question of “Where’s the Beef?” with
regard to the Bernie Madoff scandal, i.e. how could one person make $60 Billion disappear? Well…….
after spending four hours traveling ½ block in and out of merchants on El Paseo the fog is starting to
lift on a possible answer.
April which brought us record heat (100°+F) for a couple days also produced a near record turnout
for our regional event. On a warm Sunday, 63 members and guests enjoyed the personal hospitality of
Gordon and Jennifer Wangers at their RoadRunner Ranch in Fallbrook. The day was punctuated by a
beautiful facility, fi ne food and drink, fun cars from the Wangers’ collection, a long driveway fi lled with
many proper motor cars, a factual state of the American auto industry presentation by Jim Wangers,
mister GTO, and last but certainly not least the go-karts and the go-kart track. Fortunately, there was
no need for sirens and fl ashing red lights to help repair damaged bodies! It never ceases to amaze me
how young some mature people can act.
As I mentioned in our last newsletter, we the members of the national RROC have recently approved
a new set of national By-Laws and adopted a Policy and Procedures Manual. Locally we are the RROC,
not a separate organization. So I want to thank Tom Wright, Larry Davis and the now bionic Dave
Ely for participating on a regional committee to review and make recommendations for revisions, if
required, to our regional By-Laws so that they are compatible with the new national documents.
Our May meet forges new ground for our local club as we reach out to the newer members of our
region to acquaint them with our seasoned members and our Board leadership. Our club’s success
depends on the active participation of our members and our ability to attract, assimilate and retain new
members. To expedite this process we have invited all of our newest regional members to a “special”
introductory and socializing event. All of this takes place at a unique Winemaker’s Luncheon and Wine
Tasting on the beautiful grounds and facilities of the Belle Marie Winery just north of Escondido. I
strongly encourage all of you to participate in this meet. Take a short drive, meet new enthusiasts,
socialize with old acquaintances, kick tires and enjoy a wonderfully planned luncheon in a beautiful
setting. What more could you want on a spring day in San Diego?
I hope to see you all you at our May meet!
Palm Springs Get-Away Weekend
Palm Springs , CA - March 27 - 29, 2009 Meet
by Dennis Eickhoff
Photos by: Ted Struck and Al Whitley
As expected, the climate in Palm
Springs was ideal for almost anything,
especially a weekend of fi ne food, wine,
cars, shopping and even some relaxing.
The Southern California Region led by
Rick Carron organized this joint meet
with the San Diego Region. Those
staying at the meet hotel, The Riviera,
were treated to a fully refurbished
retro style, art deco, modern 50 year
old resort which reopened about six
months ago. The place was new, eye
catching, cosmopolitan, cutting edge,
with contemporary bathrooms, big LCD
TVs, shiny public furniture, wannabe
Dale Chihuly chandeliers and the most
hideous wallpaper that we have seen in
recent memory lining the dark hallways
of the guest room areas of the resort.
The appeal is defi nitely aimed at the
younger crowd which makes me a poor
judge of success.
The Friday evening event was hosted
by Chuck LaRocco and Joel Cutler at
their beautiful home in North Palm
Springs. The layout of their home and
well populated sparkling seven car
garage is ideal for a large group to
mingle and circulate. Moreover, the
spread of libations, food and chocolate
chip cookies matched the layout and
made for a fi rst class event. Pierre
Lemieux provided the wine selections
so you automatically knew that would
be superb. The evening was relaxing
with good interaction between all
participants. The San Diego Region
supplied twenty-two members plus two
guests. In addition some of you may
remember some other surprise guests:
Ray and Barbara Bain who brought
their son David this time. The Bains
are RROC members from Toronto who
attended a similar gathering hosted by
the San Diego Region in January 2006
at La Casa del Zorro (now known
as Borrego Ranch Resort and Spa)
in Borrego Springs. They obviously
read the RROC website and monitor
the upcoming events. This time they
traveled via an indirect route: Toronto
to Fort Lauderdale, boarded the Queen
Mary 2 for a trip around Cape Horn to
Los Angeles, to Palm Springs and back to
Canada the following week after three
months of traveling. It was great to see
them again and realize what devoted
RROC members will do for a good time.
Oh by the way, Sir Orville Bingley let it
slip out that last November he traveled
to Athens, Greece to run in a (real 26.2
mile) marathon in honor of his 80th
birthday. Congratulations Bing! He had
to watch his intake on Friday evening
because he was participating in a 5k
charity run on Saturday morning. The
thought of all this running makes me
tired enough to sit down with a stiff
drink and fi gure out whether I have even
run a cumulative total of 26.2 miles in
my fi rst 65 years?
Saturday morning brought another
outstanding day to the desert, this time
at the El Paseo Shopping District in
Palm Desert. Rick Carron put together
a shopping delight beginning with a
complimentary continental breakfast
San Diego and SoCal regions shared a
wonderful evening together dining al
fresco at Cuistot in Palm Desert.
The pool, with it’s cabanas, lounge chairs
and fi re pits was popular throughout the
day and at night time.
at the Daily Grill. This was followed
by a shopping opportunity at select El
Paseo stores along with fashion shows
during this Fashion Week on El Paseo.
Select merchants extended offers of free
gifts, libations and signifi cant discounts
on signifi cant purchases. In addition
to the Daily Grill the following stores
participated in this event: Bottega
Veneta, Burberry, Chicos, Cos Bar,
Gucci, Leggiadro, Optical Shop of Aspen,
Ralph Lauren, St. John, Soma Intimates
and Vilebrequin. During this shopping
spree Rolls-Royce and Bentley vehicles
(our eye candy) were prominently
parked on El Paseo in front of the
participating merchant stores. This was
a very colorful and unique event which
achieved broad participation by the
approximately 70 RROC members in
attendance.
After eating, shopping, eating and
shopping once again we fi nally headed
back to the hotel for some much
needed rest before the next eating
event. Saturday evening provided
outstanding food, drink and camaraderie
on the large outdoor patio at Cuistot
restaurant in Palm Desert. Chef
Bernard Dervieux provided excellent
main course choices of “Onglet Sauce
Croute”. Of course the meal began
with his world famous Mushroom
Soup with Chives and the entire meal
was accompanied by excellent wines
selected by none other than Pierre
Lemieux. The meal concluded with
a Taster Plate of the Pastry Chef’s
Creations. The table discussions were sincere
and lively. The company was good and the
setting was relaxing and comfortable.
Sunday morning brought more blue skies and
good times – continental breakfast at the
Polo Club’s unique residence/stables of Brent
Hartman and Ernie Riffenburgh. Then off to
the Eldorado Polo Club fi eld for a day of polo
matches (including the Lt. Governor’s Cup) and
Time to go home and get some rest!
Generous thanks are extended to Carol Deeter,
Rick Carron, Chuck LaRocco, Joel Cutler and
Pierre Lemieux together with the Southern
California Region for an outstanding and unique
weekend in the desert – warm sunshine,
fun events, fi ne food, exquisite drinks and
Roadrunner Ranch
Fallbrook , CA - April 19, 2009 Meet
We had a beautiful, sunny Southern California day
for our April RROC outing. At least 20 cars met at
North County Fair to drive together north on I-15
to Fallbrook. Our destination was the RoadRunner
Ranch, home of Gordon and Jennifer Wangers. Once
we exited I-15, the winding, live oak lined, one lane
road returned us to backcountry nostalgia. Lots of
bumps or bruises. Jennifer Wangers was pouring
a champagne welcome, and appetizers awaited us.
The Wangers’ garage was emptied and set up for
our speaker’s slide presentation. It was perfect
for getting in out of the sun. The sparkling pool,
umbrellas, and green landscaping kept us thinking
cool even as temperatures rose.
Gordon began with a brief introduction to
RoadRunner Ranch. He shared his business and
marketing background and his early interest in (fast!)
cars. Two of his cars were parked in the patio with
ours. One was the 1936 Rolls-Royce Phantom III
V-12 Barker Coupe that graced the cover of our
Sept-Oct 2008 Silver Coast News. The other was a
1979 McLaren, one very hot car!! He talked briefl y
about them before we walked down to see the six
cars he selected from his collection to share with us.
We would get back to the McLaren later. The day
was heating up and some elected to stay under cool
cover and perhaps drink more champagne.
Gordon selected a variety of cars for us to see up
close. All were exceptional cars, often for several
reasons. His narrative about each car usually
included stats too numerous for me to remember.
Each car was unique in some way and for Gordon,
worth collecting and preserving. From the fancy
Caddie and lovely Jaguar and Corvette to the hot
orange GTO called The Judge and down to the
Holden, all were interesting. Especially beautiful was
the vintage 1933 Marmon Sixteen in a pearly gray
with, oh, so subtle pin striping. We all marveled at
the quiet engine. The Holden story was particularly
good. The car was manufactured in Australia but
the engine was made in New Jersey and shipped to
Australia. Interesting way to run a business.
Now, back to the McLaren. After Robert primed
the 8 carburetors with cans of Diet Coke (actually
alcohol, right?), Gordon fi red up the McLaren. Flames
shot out the exhaust, the roar was deafening, and the
ground shook! It was quite thrilling and a great segue
into Jim Wangers’ presentation.
Our special speaker was Gordon’s uncle, Jim
Wangers. His presentation, titled THE FALL OF
AN INDUSTRY ICON was particularly timely in
this time of the TARP and government bailouts. Jim
took us through the early years of GM to its current
monetary problems. Jim has written a couple of
books about the auto industry, including “Glory Days:
Jennifer Wangers welcomed
mimosas and lemoned water.
personal
stories about
his Corvette.
Page 12
This beautiful, 1959 Cadillac
Eldorado Biarritz was one
of the very special cars in
Gordon Wanger’s collection.
When Horsepower and Passion Ruled Detroit” in it’s
5th edition, and a coffee table book called “Pontiac
Pizazz”. He worked with GM in marketing and
advertising from the mid 1960’s, through the Iacocca
years and into the muscle car era. His enthusiasm for
those years was very apparent.
From 1931 to 2008, GM was the largest automaker
in the world. Founded by Will Durant in 1908, GM
sought to represent a certain lifestyle to attract
buyers to its cars. Jim mentioned the Cadillac as the
premier luxury car, the Buick as stylish and impressive
with a lower cost than the Cadillac and fi nally the
Chevrolet. The Chevrolet would take you wherever
you wanted to go in the USA with sporty speed. It
was much more geared to the younger crowd with
less money to spend on a car.
Dennis Eickhoff
excited to listen
to Jim Wangers
-- telling us
all about Jim’s
incredible, 50-
industry.
Gordon Wangers and Robert fi re up
the McLaren. They stress that the
key to the McLaren’s speed is the use
of tennis balls and Diet Coke. ;)
Jim Wangers shares
his thoughts about the
automobile industry,
with his audience in rapt
atention.
Jim, at 83, has been around for many of the changes
brought to the auto industry. He presented slides
and statistics pointing out when the demise of the
American car industry started many years ago,
and not just with this current monetary crisis. It
began when they stopped looking at the things that
brought them success in the beginning: selling styling,
distinction and lifestyle. Picturing yourself behind
the wheel of a particular car, sells cars. Now all cars
tend to look alike. Brands have lost their individual
distinction and appeal to the customer. The news
tells us it will only get worse before it gets better.
There were so many questions that eventually we
had to break for lunch, with Jim promising to answer
more questions during or after lunch.
Lunch provided by the Wangers was served by Laurie
Waid and her kitchen crew. It included Caesar salad,
plates of fruit and vegetables, tortilla wraps, chips and
a variety of dips, cold drinks and beer with delicious
chocolate cake or fruit tart for dessert. Scrumptious
in a beautiful setting. Many thanks to both Jennifer
and Gordon for their hospitality and to Uncle Jim
Winning at the Santa Anita Concours Again
San Diego Region RROC members Ken
& Ann Smith of Rancho Santa Fe were
awarded Best of Show, Post-War for their
entry in the recent 2009 Santa Anita Picnic
With The Ponies Concours d’Elegance at
Santa Anita Park.
Congratulations to Ken and Ann Smith and their PMC
Their car is an extremely rare Rolls-Royce Phantom V State
Landaulette, one of only fi ve PVs made to Mulliner Park Ward
design number 2052. The design was made in response to requests
by heads of state for a more formal open car for parade and
ceremonial use. The entire rear compartment of the car, from the
division rearward, has a convertible top, which when lowered is
covered by a large leather boot cover. This particular car, 5VD83,
was the second made and was the London show car for Rolls-
Royce in 1965 alongside the newly introduced Silver Shadow. It
was subsequently delivered to the Emir of Bahrain in August, 1966.
The PMC was previously featured in the Peterson Museum display
of cars of heads of state. Last year, John Ellison’s 1972 Phantom VI
received this award, as well as the Peoples’ Choice Award.
