8. SHAMELESS NEW PRODUCT ANNOUNCEMENT—From Para Publishing.
Write your book by-the-numbers: just fill in the blanks.
You have heard of paint-by-the-numbers. It means filling in the blanks according to a pre-determined
plan. PAINT-by-the-numbers is a step-by-step outline that makes you look like a master. This system
in a binder shows you how to WRITE-by-the-numbers.
Writing books is hard work—unless you have a plan. Without a roadmap, it is easy to get lost.
Without noticeable progress, it is easy to become discouraged and lose momentum.
Dan Poynter will supply you with a 33-page book-writing template in a 3-ring binder. You just fill in
the blanks. Each page of the frontmatter, chapter headings and backmatter tells you what to put on
that page—your book is structured and ready for your material. See
http://parapublishing.com/sites/para/information/writing.cfm#mbp
Writing-by-the-numbers will accelerate your book project by helping you visualize the entire project
and by guiding you through the writing process.
In the past, we've told you about The Yack (www.theyack.com) and Shelfari (www.shelfari.com),
sites for social networkers who feel the tiny "books" sections of MySpace and Facebook don't
adequately reflect their love of the printed page. Here's a new one we found: www.goodreads.com.
It has a simple, attractive design and, like the above sites, connects you with a community of
bibliophiles looking for something good to readand talk about. Go here
(http://www.goodreads.com/author/program) to learn how to designate yourself as a published
author on Goodreads, at which point you'll be able to post information on your work and your tour
schedule, or even whet some appetites with a sample chapter.
2. MY MANUSCRIPT WAS EDITED, SO I DON’T NEED PROOFREADING
-- Michele DeFilippo, www.1106design.com
A commonly heard statement, but it just isn’t so. When preparing your book for press, proofreading
the final page layout is an essential quality-control step that should not be skipped, even though your
manuscript has been carefully edited. There’s no such thing as too much proofreading. For some
reason, typos and punctuation errors are just more visible in typeset text than they are in a
manuscript. Formatting inconsistencies and composition issues, such as tight and loose lines and
kerning are also easier to see on paper, as the book will be printed, than on a computer screen. All of
these things should be corrected before your book goes to press. Some typesetters include
proofreading in their per-page fee, and others don’t. Since proofreading adds between 10 and 20
hours to the job, depending on the book, their per-page fee will be higher, but the extra cost and
effort assures you of a quality product that you’ll be proud to market and sell.
4. WHEN WRITING AN ARTICLE FOR A MAGAZINE
--Pam Lontos, PR/PR, http://www.prpr.net
A successful format for an article is to open with a story that presents the problem the article will
solve. Give 3 to 8 tips, strategies, or steps that the readers can take to solve the problem. Give a
very brief, one paragraph summary with a call to action: “When you use these tips, you will....” In
the resource box at the end of the article is where you put your contact information and highlight the
aspect of what you do that you want the readers to know about. It can be your book, your
consulting practice, hiring you as a speaker for their conference, etc.
5. DO COLLEAGUES ASK YOU FOR BOOK ADVICE? Tell them about our f.ree InfoKits. Each will give
them all they need—in writing. See
6. THE TEAM: SELF PUBLISHERS AND BOOKDESIGNERS
--Kareen Ross Be It Now! Book Design http://www.bookdesign4U.com
We're a team! We each bring our strengths to the table when we meet. It's amazing to me how it
happens when it happens. The call comes in and I'm told "I'm self publishing my book and I don't
know anything about it, but my manuscript will be back from the editors next week and I just
ordered my ISBN......! HELLO! That doesn't sound like they don't know anything... they are mostly
unfamiliar with the design process.
Where writing is the authors' strength and passion... design and imagery is the designers. Which
really is a process of parts and pieces that fit neatly together like a wonderfully inspired puzzle. One
that catches the attention and motivates the customer to pick up the book, turn it over or open it up,
and eventually purchase it... they are mesmerized by the combination of passions of both author and
designer. This is the response we both desire and work to achieve. One cannot function without the
other.
There are as many ways to accomplish this as there are people doing it, each with their own style
and technique for getting the attention. And fiction and not-fiction books have a unique look and feel
to them as well. It's important that your vision is achieved.
For a lot of authors, price is another important factor in choosing the designer to work with. Pricing is
as unique to each designer as writing is to each author. Some designers find that a flat rate works
best, where others price with a base rate for production time and special services are added and
priced based on the work and time they will take. One is not better than the other just different, like
each book is different. And as it applies for your project is how the choice is made.
What is important for the author is that the recipe of the two of them fits. The phone conversations,
the advice freely given, tone of voice, suggestions and responsiveness.
Does their pricing structure, time-line, ways-of-doing business and focus match. I suggest an author
make a list of what's important for their book and or cover or interior design and use when
contacting designers as a base for their discussions.
The coming together of author and designer is the last step before the actualization of the book... the
printing! Which is another process to be discussed at a later date.
7. GET YOUR DOMAIN NAMES NOW!..... DON'T WAIT
8. TO SELL MAXIMUM COPIES, WRITE YOUR BOOK FOR YOUR AUDIENCE
--BookCoach Judy Cullins judycullins@cox.net, www.bookcoaching.com
It's always best to write the book your audience wants rather than write a book and hope others will
buy. When your picture your specific audience while writing each chapter, you will engage them
more because you speak personally to them. General information for all audiences doesn't sell nearly
as well, and your writing is not nearly as clear as with specific solutions for a specific audience.
