hardship of the pioneer families of Mansfield & District. It enables the
Society to continue to preserve local history in the words of each family

Sir William Clarke, first President of St John

Baronet Sir William Clarke of Rupertswood was a prominent landowner
and philanthropist who was Chairman of the Melbourne International
Exhibition 1880, for which the Exhibition building was built. He was a
leader in many different fields, including President of St John Ambulance
Association in Victoria which began the ambulance services in this State.
Ballangeich and Ellerslie - Bridging the Years

Ballangeich and Ellerslie districts developed rapidly with the arrival
of European settlers in 1840, the indigenous population was pushed
to one side. In 1865, the first land sales occurred in both districts.
The influx of small farmers was the seed to the birth of these
communities. This is their story.
