<strong>Society</strong> to continue to preserve local history in the words <strong>of</strong> each family<br />

Baronet Sir William Clarke <strong>of</strong> Rupertswood was a prominent landowner<br />

and philanthropist who was Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Melbourne International<br />

Exhibition 1880, for which the Exhibition building was built. He was a<br />

leader in many different fields, including President <strong>of</strong> St John Ambulance<br />

Association in <strong>Victoria</strong> which began the ambulance services in this State.<br />

Ballangeich and Ellerslie - Bridging the Years<br />

Ballangeich and Ellerslie districts developed rapidly with the arrival<br />

<strong>of</strong> European settlers in 1840, the indigenous population was pushed<br />

to one side. In 1865, the first land sales occurred in both districts.<br />

The influx <strong>of</strong> small farmers was the seed to the birth <strong>of</strong> these<br />

communities. This is their story.<br />
