CHAIR AND CEO MESSAGE 

Our 99th year of service to our 

community was the best ever 

for our YMCA. 

We served 65,000 individuals, 

towards our 2010 goal of 90,000. 

We had our best summer day camp 

program with over 6,000 camper 

weeks. We had nearly 100% 

occupancy in our 106 room housing 

program. We maintained an 

average of registered members 

of over 20,000 and served another 

average of 5,000 in general access 

in our family centres. We had our 

first full year of the service delivery 

component of Families First 

Edmonton research project. 

We completed the Straight from 

the Heart Capital Campaign, raising 

$10.2 million, the most ever raised 

by our YMCA in a community 

campaign. The construction of 

the Don Wheaton Family YMCA 

continued as the underground 

parkade was completed and the 

above ground structure began to 

be visible. 

The YMCA Strong Kids Campaign 

raised $454,000 the most ever 

raised. 

Our Centennial Celebration 

Committee co-chaired by Ed Cook 

and Bill Rees worked in earnest 

as they finalized the plans for the 

YMCA’s 2007 centenary. A whole 

range of events and activities are 

being implemented as this annual 

report is prepared. 

We honor the contributions of 

the thousands of people who have 

served as YMCA volunteers and staff 

over the past 100 years. It was their 

leadership and commitment that 

ensured ongoing renewal and 

relevance for the YMCA of 

Edmonton. Their labours are 

recorded in a book that will be 

published and released in 

April 2007. 

It is our privilege to continue to 

build on this dynamic legacy of 

personal development in spirit, 

mind and body for all in the 

community regardless of 

circumstance. Everyone is welcome 

to the YMCA. As we reflect over the 

past year, we are grateful for the 

support of our board and staff 

leadership team, the hundreds of 

volunteers, numerous community 

partners, donors and the tens of 

thousands of men, women and 

children who chose YMCA services. 

We invite you to actively participate 

in the centennial celebrations over 

2007. May these celebrations 

honoring the achievements of the 

past century re-energize and 

reaffirm our commitment for the 

next 100 years.

CHILD CARE GETS STARTED 

“The YMCA child care has been 

part of our family experience for the 

last four years. Our oldest daughter, 

Bryna, came into the YMCA when 

she was 3 years old. She has multiple 

life threatening food allergies, asthma 

and severe eczema. 

The YMCA child care was 

phenomenal about maintaining her 

safety. The staff were very aware of 

her health issues and very cautious 

yet let her experience everything in 

a safe manner. 

What has comforted us as we let go 

of that hug in the morning is that 

Bryna is going into open arms and 

open hearts of staff that care for her 

and love her as family would. 

We feel part of the YMCA family 

and they are in our hearts forever 

for caring for our beautiful and 

wonderful little Bryna. We will 

continue to be the biggest fans of 

our YMCA!”

• In 2006 the YMCA of 

Edmonton Child Care served 

over 1,460 children everyday. 

• The YMCA of Edmonton is 

the largest provider of not-forprofit 

Child Care in our city.

COLLECTIVE KITCHEN 

“The Collective Kitchen is a program 

offered through the YMCA Enterprise 

Centre in which we come together to 

cook and prepare meals. 

I have been a participant in the 

Collective Kitchen for over two years 

and it is the best investment I ever 

made for myself and my children. A 

$3.00 investment; that is what I pay. 

The rest of the program is supported 

by various community partners. 

We learn how to prepare healthy 

meals, shopping on a budget, and 

making healthy life choices. 

Other bonuses are the socializing and 

coming together to experience each 

others customs and crafts. In the 

Collective Kitchen we learn to accept 

each others differences and embrace 

those differences through the 

expression of our food.”

Kitchen program.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS 

“When the Kids Club after school 

program started in February our kids 

were all excited, except for one girl, 

Joanne (name changed), who refused 

to take part in the activities. 

It became clear that the reason 

Joanne did not want to be at Kids 

Club was because she had anxiety 

and difficulties with reading aloud. 

I explained to Joanne that Kids Club 

was a safe place for kids to work 

together toward becoming better readers. 

As Joanne continued to have difficulty, 

I noticed that she wasn’t stopping 

between sentences to breathe. After 

pointing this out, her reading 

improved and the change was so 

impressive that we all erupted in 

applause after she finished reading. 

Now Joanne is excited to come to 

Kids Club and every morning she 

asks if it is a “YMCA day today?”

• In 2006, 113 elementary 

school children from low 

income households have 

developed better reading and 

social skills as a result of the 

YMCA Kids Club.

THE YMCA 

HOUSING PROGRAM 

“The YMCA housing program 

recently lent support to a young 

woman who was pregnant and 

addicted to drugs. 

When the baby arrived, the mother 

was excited to be back at the YMCA 

to try and get off drugs and find some 

secure housing. Three days later, she 

relapsed, and to ensure the child’s 

safety, her child was taken from her by 

Children’s Services. The woman was 

devastated, but knew that the YMCA 

support system would help her to get 

clean and get her baby back. 

She started 

attending drug 

and alcohol 

counseling 

sessions, went 

into detox 

and started 

planning for treatment. She has now 

been clean for three months and has 

been reunited with her baby. She has 

transitioned out of the YMCA and 

focuses on bettering her life for herself 

and for her child. 

The YMCA housing team is inspired 

by this woman’s amazing courage 

and strength. She is a positive role 

model for other women who struggle 

with the same afflictions as she has 

overcome.”

resident support worker.

FITNESS PROGRAMMING 

FOR ADULTS 

“I first started coming to the William 

Lutsky YMCA about four years ago 

as a blind mother of three young 

children. I was seeking out 

opportunities to connect with other 

parents and to improve my fitness 

level. Prior to joining the YMCA, 

I was feeling isolated because I was 

having difficulty accessing a fitness 

facility which would provide for 

my special needs and those of my 

children. 

I heard about the YMCA Opportunity 

Fund from a friend. I booked an 

appointment and the YMCA staff 

were able to provide a membership for 

the whole family. 

I have benefited tremendously 

from joining the YMCA. Since the 

beginning of my membership, the staff 

has always been empathetic, attentive 

and accommodating to my disability 

(blindness). The YMCA staff has 

truly made the YMCA facility 

a second home to my family.”

“I came to the Family Ties Program 

in low spirits, no direction, a chaotic 

household, fear of the world. I had no 

knowledge of who I was or what I 

was capable of and I did not have the 

motivation or desire to find out. 

Fortunately my family support worker 

gave me the resources and support to 

face my challenges and hard times. 

She pushed me beyond myself. She 

never gave up on me. Even though 

she presented me with what I thought 

were impossible challenges, she 

changed my viewpoint about how 

I looked at life that I'm grateful for. 

Without the Family Ties Program and 

my family support worker’s direction, 

honest opinions, useful and never 

ending resources, awesome laughter, 

and the stern “quit being so hard on 

yourself” comments, I know I would 

not be where I am today. I have 

gained more emotional stability. I feel 

more human, I feel heard, and I feel 

important. I am capable of making 

decisions, I am capable of making 

change happen, and I am necessary.”

one partner at a time 

In January 2006, the YMCA Housing 

program established a partnership with 

the George Spady Centre. The purpose 

of this partnership was to provide 

temporary shelter to clients who have 

finished detox and waiting for 

treatment. There are long waiting lists 

for treatment and clients are sometimes 

delayed a month after detox to be 

admitted into treatment. Many of the 

clients that George Spady serve are 

homeless and have no shelter after they 

leave detox. As a former employee of the 

George Spady, I often witnessed clients 

relapsing after detox because they had 

no housing until their treatment date. 

Clients often found themselves back on 

the streets and drawn back into a 

lifestyle of alcohol and drugs. Our 

partnership with the George Spady 

Centre provides the clients with a safe 

place to stay until they leave for 

treatment. During their stay at the 

YMCA, they are given the opportunity 

to participate in recovery programs such 

as AADAC and 12 Step programs. 

We have five rooms available for the 

George Spady clients. Since January, we 

have had eight clients participate in the 

program. All of those clients successfully 

made it to treatment, so far. One of the 

two that did not make it to treatment 

cancelled treatment due to medical 

reasons. Presently we have three clients 

occupying rooms from the program and 

doing well with focusing on their 

recovery.

YMCA World Peace Week was held 

November 18-25, 2006. The YMCA 

of Edmonton, together with YMCA 

Associations across Canada, urge 

people to make peace their personal 

cause and to tap into the collective 

power of people who want to make 

a positive impact in the world. 

The YMCA incorporates peace 

building activities into programs 

year- round. During YMCA World 

Peace Week special emphasis is 

placed on teaching children and 

youth about the dimensions of 

peace and on recognizing the peace 

efforts of local residents. 

Through 

games, 

activities and 

by using the 

YMCA Peace 

Building 

Activity Guide, 

children and 

youth translate values into actions 

by exploring topics such as 

cooperation, empathy, respect, 

positive communication, conflict 

resolution and parallels between 

community and global issues. 

The 2006 YMCA Peace Medals 

were awarded to Yvonne Chiu 

(Multicultural Health Brokers) and 

The Multicultural Youth Mentorship 

and Leadership Initiative (MYML). 

The YMCA Peace Medal is intended 

to recognize the achievements of 

individuals and groups in local 

communities who - without any 

special resources - demonstrate in 

their lives and activities the values 

expressed in the World Alliance of 

YMCA's 1981 Statement of Peace.

“At age 14, Bobby came to the Youth 

Transitions Program (YTP) with 

family troubles, personal issues, and 

quite a negative attitude toward 

school. He had been kicked out of his 

house, diagnosed with ADHD, had 

been involved in crime, attempted 

suicide and was battling addictions. 

Through encouragement and praise 

for his impressive writing skills, Bobby 

soon became confident in sharing 

his opinions and ideas with the rest 

of the class. 

Bobby completed the program with 

his overall attendance record being 

one of the highest in the class and 

at the present, Bobby is attending 

a Junior/Senior High School in 

Stony Plain. He has completed his 

grade 9 courses. 

When Bobby last came to visit the 

YMCA on one of his days off from 

school, he proudly told us how well he 

was now doing in school. He couldn’t 

seem to believe how far he had 

progressed from only one year ago.

experience and still stays in touch 

with the YMCA today.”

100 volunteers, over 800 donors, 

and our great staff, we have 

surpassed the $10 million mark in 

our community capital campaign. 

Our YMCA Board of Directors
