North America<br />

The Norse discovery <strong>of</strong> North America <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early eleventh century has naturally attracted all k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong><br />

attention. Although <strong>the</strong> literary traditions enshr<strong>in</strong>ed above all <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> V<strong>in</strong>land sagas have <strong>of</strong>ten been called<br />

<strong>in</strong>to question (cf. (B330, B332)), <strong>the</strong> fact that many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> essential po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se traditions are already<br />

found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> works <strong>of</strong> Adam <strong>of</strong> Bremen (B73) and Ari (B255) lend <strong>the</strong>m some credibility.<br />

L’Anse aux Meadows<br />

Not until <strong>the</strong> excavation <strong>of</strong> an <strong>in</strong>disputably Norse farmstead complex at L’Anse aux Meadows on<br />

Newfoundland was def<strong>in</strong>itive pro<strong>of</strong> discovered <strong>of</strong> a Vik<strong>in</strong>g presence <strong>in</strong> North America; for fur<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

clearly fake, forms <strong>of</strong> material evidence, see any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> general items above.<br />

The V<strong>in</strong>land question<br />

Much debate has r<strong>age</strong>d over exactly where Vínland or ‘W<strong>in</strong>e-land’ was; no def<strong>in</strong>itive answer is likely to<br />

be found, but for those who accept <strong>the</strong> tradition at all, somewhere fur<strong>the</strong>r south <strong>of</strong> L’Anse aux Meadows<br />

looks most likely.<br />
