The late tenth century<br />

Harald bluetooth was driven out by a rebellion around 986 and succeeded by his son Sve<strong>in</strong> forkbeard;<br />

various causes have been mooted for this, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g an economic crisis (N70 ff.), a reaction aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

Harald’s overbear<strong>in</strong>g demands, and <strong>the</strong> loss <strong>of</strong> face eng<strong>in</strong>eered by <strong>the</strong> German <strong>in</strong>vasion and occupation<br />

<strong>of</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn Jutland from 974 to 983. See:<br />

The <strong>Anglo</strong>-Danish empire<br />

After a series <strong>of</strong> ‘s<strong>of</strong>ten<strong>in</strong>g-up’ raids <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> late tenth and early eleventh century, Sve<strong>in</strong> forkbeard<br />

achieved a political conquest <strong>of</strong> England <strong>in</strong> 1013, only to die almost immediately. His success was<br />

promptly followed by up his son Knut, who <strong>the</strong>n ruled over England and Denmark from 1016 to 1035.<br />
