Vik<strong>in</strong>g-<strong>age</strong> Scand<strong>in</strong>avia<br />

Relatively less popular attention has been paid to <strong>the</strong> <strong>history</strong> <strong>of</strong> Scand<strong>in</strong>avia dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Vik<strong>in</strong>g <strong>age</strong>, and a<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r problem for <strong>the</strong> English-speak<strong>in</strong>g student is that most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> detailed research has naturally been<br />

conducted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Scand<strong>in</strong>avian</strong> langu<strong>age</strong>s. The deceptively named (A33) is still <strong>the</strong> most comprehensive<br />

attempt to address <strong>the</strong> social <strong>history</strong> <strong>of</strong> Vik<strong>in</strong>g-<strong>age</strong> Scand<strong>in</strong>avia <strong>in</strong> English, even though it is now<br />

outdated on many po<strong>in</strong>ts; a better place to start would be with <strong>the</strong> sections devoted to Scand<strong>in</strong>avia <strong>in</strong><br />

many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> volumes cited above, especially (A21). For more specific work on Vik<strong>in</strong>g-<strong>age</strong> Scand<strong>in</strong>avia,<br />

as well as references to material concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> pre-Vik<strong>in</strong>g (Iron <strong>age</strong>) and post-Vik<strong>in</strong>g (mediaeval)<br />

periods, see section (C).<br />

Major series<br />

Most volumes <strong>of</strong> collected papers, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Festschriften and conference proceed<strong>in</strong>gs, are ga<strong>the</strong>red<br />

this way.<br />

The Vik<strong>in</strong>g congresses<br />

The most significant is <strong>the</strong> series <strong>of</strong> Vik<strong>in</strong>g congresses held every few years s<strong>in</strong>ce 1950 <strong>in</strong> various<br />

locations <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scand<strong>in</strong>avian</strong> significance. These are <strong>of</strong> significance not only for show<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> development<br />

<strong>of</strong> th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field, but also for provid<strong>in</strong>g numerous presentations <strong>in</strong> condensed form that would<br />
