<strong>Scand<strong>in</strong>avian</strong> History <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vik<strong>in</strong>g Age<br />

TEXTBOOKS, REFERENCE WORKS, AND WRITTEN SOURCES<br />

A. TEXTBOOKS AND REFERENCE WORKS<br />

Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> major serial works on Vik<strong>in</strong>g-<strong>age</strong> and mediaeval Scand<strong>in</strong>avia have been produced <strong>in</strong> an<br />

uneasy mixture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vernacular <strong>Scand<strong>in</strong>avian</strong> langu<strong>age</strong>s and are now tend<strong>in</strong>g to look somewhat<br />

outdated. This applies, for example, to <strong>the</strong> volumes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nordisk kultur series, which never<strong>the</strong>less <strong>in</strong><br />

some cases rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> most significant guides to various aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scand<strong>in</strong>avian</strong> culture, e.g. (B900-01).<br />

A pr<strong>of</strong>oundly useful guide to virtually anyth<strong>in</strong>g anyone could conceivably wish to know on <strong>the</strong> subject is<br />

provided by <strong>the</strong> Kulturhistorisk leksikon for nordisk middelalder fra vik<strong>in</strong>getid til reformationstid (A70),<br />

although with an <strong>in</strong>evitable drift towards <strong>the</strong> mediaeval period; for a more recent, although ra<strong>the</strong>r less<br />

copious, encyclopaedia see (A73).<br />

General textbooks<br />

Due to popular <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>the</strong>re is a vast array <strong>of</strong> general handbooks available on ‘<strong>the</strong><br />

Vik<strong>in</strong>gs’, most <strong>of</strong> which say much <strong>the</strong> same th<strong>in</strong>g and concentrate extensively on Vik<strong>in</strong>g activity abroad<br />

ra<strong>the</strong>r than Scand<strong>in</strong>avia. The rise to prom<strong>in</strong>ence <strong>of</strong> archaeology as <strong>the</strong> most significant discipl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

field means that many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most useful and more recent contributions are well illustrated; (A14) and<br />

(A21) can be particularly recommended as accessible and <strong>in</strong>formative guides. For a faster-paced<br />

rollercoaster <strong>of</strong> a ride through Vik<strong>in</strong>g <strong>history</strong> (A12) has a lot go<strong>in</strong>g for it.<br />

As <strong>the</strong> subject has split up <strong>in</strong>to separate components or discipl<strong>in</strong>es, so it has become more and more<br />

difficult for <strong>in</strong>dividual scholars to master <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wide and disparate range <strong>of</strong> material available.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>gly, many recent contributions consist <strong>of</strong> contributions by specialists <strong>in</strong> particular fields; all <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g are highly recommended.<br />
