PREFACE<br />

This bibliography has been put toge<strong>the</strong>r for <strong>the</strong> guidance <strong>of</strong> students study<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> paper<br />

‘<strong>Scand<strong>in</strong>avian</strong> <strong>history</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vik<strong>in</strong>g <strong>age</strong>’ <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Anglo</strong>-<strong>Saxon</strong>, Norse and Celtic,<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Cambridge. Its model and <strong>in</strong>spiration was <strong>the</strong> bibliography <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>history</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Anglo</strong>-<br />

<strong>Saxon</strong> England compiled by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Simon Keynes, and like its predecessor this bibliography also<br />

makes no claim to be anyth<strong>in</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>r than an <strong>in</strong>formal and ephemeral document, <strong>in</strong> this case provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a bibliographical guide to <strong>the</strong> sources <strong>of</strong>, and major <strong>the</strong>mes <strong>in</strong>, Vik<strong>in</strong>g <strong>history</strong>.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> bibliography is <strong>in</strong>tended primarily for <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> students, it <strong>in</strong>cludes translations as well as<br />

editions <strong>of</strong> primary written sources, and <strong>the</strong> emphasis is heavily upon secondary literature <strong>in</strong> English.<br />

When items <strong>in</strong> langu<strong>age</strong>s o<strong>the</strong>r than English are listed, <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> any English summary is<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicated by (E.s.). The bibliography accord<strong>in</strong>gly makes no effort to be exhaustive <strong>in</strong> any respect, and<br />

overall concentrates extensively on more modern research; readers are never<strong>the</strong>less encour<strong>age</strong>d to<br />

delve more deeply through <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> bibliographies <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> items cited here.<br />

One f<strong>in</strong>al word <strong>of</strong> warn<strong>in</strong>g centres on <strong>the</strong> terms employed <strong>in</strong> this bibliography. ‘Scand<strong>in</strong>avia’ is here<br />

def<strong>in</strong>ed as a cultural ra<strong>the</strong>r than geographical area, encompass<strong>in</strong>g Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Faroe,<br />

and Iceland; moreover, even with<strong>in</strong> those limits ‘<strong>Scand<strong>in</strong>avian</strong>’ refers to <strong>the</strong> culture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Germanicspeak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

elements ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>digenous Lappish or Sami populations. In chronological terms<br />

‘Vik<strong>in</strong>g <strong>age</strong>’ is employed to refer roughly to a period from around 750 to around 1050; <strong>the</strong> period<br />

before 750 has been called ‘Iron <strong>age</strong>’, <strong>the</strong> period after 1050 ‘mediaeval’. These parameters are for<br />

pure convenience only, even though it is appreciated that <strong>the</strong>y are an uneasy mixture <strong>of</strong> English and<br />

<strong>Scand<strong>in</strong>avian</strong>, or archaeological and conventional historical, conceptions that can rightly be criticised<br />

as too rigid, mislead<strong>in</strong>g, or simply wrong.<br />

The vast majority <strong>of</strong> references <strong>in</strong> this bibliography are (or soon will be) available for consultation <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> libraries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Cambridge, and to some extent preference has been given to <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>clusion <strong>of</strong> such items at <strong>the</strong> expense <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs which are not held <strong>in</strong> those libraries. The bulk <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>m are naturally only accessible <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> University Library, but a fair range <strong>of</strong> material is also to be<br />

located <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> libraries <strong>of</strong> various departments, such as <strong>the</strong> <strong>Anglo</strong>-<strong>Saxon</strong> Norse and Celtic section <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> English Faculty Library, <strong>the</strong> Seeley Library <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> History, and <strong>the</strong> Haddon Library <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Archaeology and Anthropology; references to hold<strong>in</strong>g libraries and classmarks will<br />

generally be found <strong>in</strong> square brackets follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dividual items, with preference given to <strong>the</strong><br />

University Library. Students are encour<strong>age</strong>d to help build up <strong>the</strong> hold<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir college libraries<br />

and may well want to purchase some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> more general items <strong>in</strong> section (A) <strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />
