The ‘Jell<strong>in</strong>g beast’ from <strong>the</strong> larger runestone at Jell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Jutland, on which k<strong>in</strong>g Harald<br />

bluetooth proclaimed his sovereignty over Denmark and Norway as well as observ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that he ‘made <strong>the</strong> Danes Christian’. Variously <strong>in</strong>terpreted as a symbol <strong>of</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r pagan<br />

mythology or royal authority, <strong>the</strong> art-work reflects <strong>the</strong> Mammen style and is possibly to<br />

be dated to <strong>the</strong> 960s.
