Shipbuild<strong>in</strong>g and ship design<br />

The design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> various k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> Vik<strong>in</strong>g ships naturally reflects <strong>the</strong>ir various functions; hence warships<br />

had a lower draught than merchant ships, enabl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m to beach easily on undefended territory or sail<br />

quite a way up river routes.<br />

Navigation<br />

The question <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> navigational techniques employed by <strong>the</strong> Vik<strong>in</strong>gs is a tricky and hotly disputed one,<br />

but probably reflects a comb<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> factors, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g: a knowledge <strong>of</strong> tides and currents; observ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

cloud formations and bird-flight; a recognition <strong>of</strong> key landscape features; a vague estimation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sun’s<br />

pass<strong>age</strong> enabl<strong>in</strong>g an approximation <strong>of</strong> a latitud<strong>in</strong>al (but not longitud<strong>in</strong>al) position; and good oldfashioned<br />

guesswork and luck.<br />

Art-styles<br />

<strong>Scand<strong>in</strong>avian</strong> art is traditionally def<strong>in</strong>ed with reference to a series <strong>of</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>ctive ‘styles’, most <strong>of</strong> which<br />

developed gradually out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> common Germanic animal art. The criteria are both stylistic and<br />

iconographical. Although naturally <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g for its own sake, <strong>the</strong> trends <strong>in</strong> art-styles are <strong>of</strong> crucial<br />

importance for purposes <strong>of</strong> dat<strong>in</strong>g all k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> archaeological rema<strong>in</strong>s; this also <strong>in</strong>cludes decorated<br />
