<strong>Scand<strong>in</strong>avian</strong> History <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vik<strong>in</strong>g Age<br />

For purposes <strong>of</strong> comparison<br />

The specific fate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vik<strong>in</strong>gs outside ma<strong>in</strong>land Scand<strong>in</strong>avia is addressed <strong>in</strong> separate sections <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

bibliography (G-J), although with <strong>the</strong> greatest concentration on areas where a <strong>Scand<strong>in</strong>avian</strong> culture took<br />

root at <strong>the</strong> expense <strong>of</strong> those regions where <strong>the</strong> Vik<strong>in</strong>g presence was more ephemeral and absorbed <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>the</strong> local populace. However, an understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>history</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> neighbour<strong>in</strong>g regions <strong>of</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

Europe <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own right is essential to an understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> both Vik<strong>in</strong>g-<strong>age</strong> Scand<strong>in</strong>avia and Vik<strong>in</strong>g<br />

activity abroad, and this brief section is <strong>of</strong>fered merely as a start<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> this direction.<br />
