Editorial
Second Wind
We’re now on our second issue—
isn’t that something? The first issue
received a warm response
from the people we value most. Yes, that’s
you, dear readers. And we continue to
come up with a better product in each issue.
This time, we’re proud to feature MUIC
students excelling in various fields—
whether in theater, debating skills, environment
protection or humanitarian work.
Learning is not confined to the four walls
of the classroom, so keep up with the
good work, MUIC students!
Don’t forget to answer this issue’s Quiz!
We have a new set of cool prizes, again
COVER STORY
And All That Jazz!
It was a class composed of 19 students, all coming
from diiferent majors but held together by a
passion for theatrical entertainment-acting, singing,
dancing, and even the production work such
a craft entailed. Last March, they presented the
musical “Chicago” as their final project for ICEG
463 Drama offered by the Humanities and Language
Division (HLD), filling up the MUIC
Auditorium, earning applause from students
and faculty members alike. What roles did
they play in the musical’s success? How was
it to work with other students they barely
knew? What life lessons have they learned?
The musical’s director and the lead cast
shared their thoughts with us.
And if you’ve got something to say, write
it down and send it to us. Who knows,
your essay might be the next one we
publish on CAMPUS Voice!
CAMPUS magazine is published bimonthly
“Velma Kelly”
Ms. Tanaporn “Pond” Lertritsumpun (International Business Major)
• The Velma Kelly role is very dynamic, intense. She killed her husband and
sister after all. She is also sarcastic, sexy, tough, yet funny.
• To prepare for the role, I watched many versions of Velma, including the 2002
movie, and the Deer Park High School and Brazilian versions.
• My “girls” and I wanted the “Cell Block Tango” number to be the highlight of
the musical. We practiced a lot.
• We had inevitable arguments in this final project, but, in the end, we all came
out as a good team.
• With determination and practice, you can do anything.
“Mama Morton” / Director
Ms. Thanita “Claire” Kaeokiatsamphant (Finance Major)
• We chose to stage “Chicago” since our class consisted of mostly girls and the
props we would need won’t be too hard to make and find.
• The hardest part of being the director is time management. We only had 6
weeks to master acting, singing and dancing.
• All my classmates were very cooperative and put in a lot of effort to make our
musical successful. I’m so glad that I enrolled in this course.
• “Chicago” taught me how to ensure that people contribute to the work and at
the same time make them feel that they were treated fairly.
Lessons in Ecotourism
Joining the Science Division’s ICEN 460: Ecotourism field trip is both fun and challenging as
several students learned for themselves after spending three days and two nights in Sai Yok
National Park last March. The students, all of them Environment Science majors, learned first-hand
how ecological principles are applied to tourism. They had lunch with Mon school kids, fixed the
school’s playground, learned about the national park’s flora and fauna as they trekked some seven
kilometers of nature trail, witnessed how villagers harvest and process turmeric, and rode kayaks
on the Kwai Noi River.
“We took a 7-kilometer hike through
a nature trail. During the trek, we were
taught [by park rangers] how to recognize
signs of elephants as well as wild pigs
and deer. From footprints, to mud rubs,
from broken bamboo to marked trees, the
guides showed where to look for signs of
wildlife.”
- Mr. Pierre-Luc Paulin -
“We stopped about an hour to
have some lunch that was prepared for us by
the locals. The meal was wrapped in banana
leaves. It’s probably the most eco-friendly
meal we’ve had during the trip. In my opinion,
it would have been a great idea to have most
of the meals packed that way to minimize any
negative impact on the environment.”
h school acting competitions in the South of Thailand when
ld. I won 1st Prize for my role as Nancy in “Oliver Twist.”
g since I was young, so my first choice was the role of Velma
my voice doesn’t suit Velma’s character, so I auditioned for
ad.
in the American Cheer and Dance Club helped me calm my
as I played Roxie, who’s supposed to be selfish and ambitious.
a musical again, I think it would be in “Dreamgirls.”
le of Billy was not that difficult, but his character is very
who I really am.
part of the show for me is the “We Both Reached for the
where we all performed together.
as technical director in this musical. I loved doing it!
rama because I wanted to balance my academics with
Turned out, we had to work hard for Chicago, but it was
mically.
-Mr. Vladislav Plotnikov -
“The water was quite deep and the current was very strong that it
was not too difficult to kayak. The environment was so beautiful with
lots of tall trees, [the riverside lined up by walls of rock] eroded by
the river; there were waterfalls and some caves. I saw a motor boat
towing floating hotels and restaurants that were full of tourists.
[Though such floating tourist areas bring revenue] I think they
cause noise pollution and strains wastewater management. Since the
river is located in a national park, the number of visitors, rafts
and floating hotels and restaurants should have been restricted.”
Helping
NEPAL
Quake Victims
The plight of the victims of the earthquake in Nepal brought out once again the innate
compassion of the MUIC community. Numerous people wrote notes of sympathy and
hung them on a “Tree of Prayer” set up at the MUIC Information Center. Cash donations
reached 40,100 Baht and were turned over to Mahidol University on May 7, 2015 as
part of the campus-wide fund drive.

Downtime with Debaters
Those guys (and gals) onstage
arguing with other guys (and
gals)—yeah, the debaters. They always
look serious. Don’t they ever
chill?
Well, they do. CAMPUS asked
three of them, in fact. Ms. Hyun A
“Hannah” Jung (International Relations),
Mr. Akash Nanik Michandani
(Finance) and Ms. Thitaree
“Natt” Lapanaphan (International
2. Hang out with other debaters
1. Pizza
2. Isaan fare (especially grilled
Favorite Drink
It’s a toss-up between coffee, beer
and wine.
Their rehearsals can be grueling—hours upon hours of honing their
arguments and testing their debating skills with fellow Club members.
Most of them consider the SMO room as their favorite hangout; talk
about combining work and play! For “Hannah,” her idea of a good downtime
is to “binge-watch” her favorite American TV series “to maintain my
sanity.” It’s either that or a good meal with Natt, Akash and the rest of
their team mates and friends in either Sri Suwan or Mama Mia, popular
restaurants which are right across MUIC. Natt said that “we are like a family;
debating has made us close to each other.” Natt and Akash both love
Isaan food. Somtam is “man’s greatest invention,” according to Akash. On
the other hand, Hannah goes for either sushi or beef steak. But if you ask
all three, pizza reigns supreme!
“Longer Library Hours a Must”
With the availability and accessibility of information technology and telecommunication
products like smart phones with unlimited Internet access, people
can now search for anything, anywhere and anytime. Some may believe that
this was the previous role of libraries, and perhaps, modern technology has
rendered obsolete a once crucial part of society.
However, in many aspects, libraries have also evolved to be able to cater to the
new, tech-savvy, generation. Our very own library at MUIC is one great example
of a new media library—it is equipped with online journals, educational
documentaries in CDs, and audio tapes for second language learning assistance.
On top of this, the library also has friendly staff members who
readily help students.
One downside, however, is that the library usually closes at 6 pm. It is
important for libraries to remain open for students for as long as possible.
Students do not always have the same schedules. Some may be early birds
or night owls, some have work during the day but their schedules free up at
night. Many prestigious institutions recognize the significance of providing a
quiet and open space for solitary, autonomous learning, and concentration.
Extending the library hours would not only benefit and encourage MUIC students
to excel in their academic studies, but would also help to enhance the
image of MUIC as an institution that recognizes the importance of autonomous
learning and exploration of knowledge.
