Swearing In of the New Chief & Councillors
On October 3rd, 2011, the new Ermineskin Chief and four
Councillors were sworn in at the Elders Centre. Lawyer Wilton
Littlechild did the official swearing in and Randy Littlechild,
Maskwacis Health Services, did the MC duties. Constable Perry
Cardinal salutes the Ermineskin Flag during the Honour Song.
October 16th, 2011 is World Food Day. “Price swings, upswings
in particular, represent a major threat to food security in
developing countries. Hardest hit are the poor. According to the
World Bank, in 2010-2011 rising food costs pushed nearly 70
million people into extreme poverty” (www.fao.org).

September 24th, 2011, was the Maskwacis Cultural College’s
Graduation. This was MCC‟s 23rd Annual graduation and the
theme for this year was „Awina Niya-Who Am I?‟ Congratulations
to Jamie Carlson and the other Designate Honours students
on your achievements. The Ermineskin, Montana, Samson and
Louis Bull Nations are big supporters of the college and deserve
recognition for their efforts and support.
On September 30th, 2011,
Dennis Whitebear Sr. was
elected Councillor. Five
hundred and sixty six (566)
Ermineskin band members
voted this round so that
means 27.8% of the people
voted in this election.
Dennis captured 24.3% of
the vote while second place
finisher Bruce Lee got
19.4%. Gordon Minde came
in third and took 19.2% of
the vote.
Good luck to Dennis in his
new position and thanks to
all the people who supported
the nation through voting.

Ermineskin Adult Literacy Program Students & Staff 2011
Pictured above is the Adult Literacy students and staff for the 2011-2012 semester. There
are twenty students this year and the spaces were all filled. Eleanor Roan is the Coordinator
and Robin Sims, who dances Men‟s Golden Age by the way, is the instructor and Caroline
Omeasoo is the Education Assistant. The program started back in 2000. This year the program
began on September 26th, 2011, and runs to May 11th, 2012. The students usually start off
here and then move onto the Norquest College in Wetaskiwin or to the Maskwacis Cultural
College (MCC) in Hobbema, which is located on the Samson reserve.
Jerry Roasting used to be a student at the adult literacy program but has since graduated from
there and is now working at the Adult Literacy as a Cree Language Instructor Level Two. He
graduated with a diploma in Cree Language Instructor Training.

Chief & Council Swearing-In Ceremony
On Monday October 3rd, 2011, the new Chief and four Councillors were officially sworn in by Dr. J.
Wilton Littlechild at the Ermineskin Elders Centre. Newly elected Councillor Dennis Whitebear Sr.
was in attendance but was not officially sworn in yet and that will happen at a later date and the Ermineskin Newsletter
will bring you the details. The swearing in began with a Pipe Ceremony at 8:30am that morning and the official
swearing in ceremony began at 9:30am. Wetaskiwin Mayor Bill Elliot was in attendance as well as RCMP Superintendent
Curtis Zablocki.
The first to be sworn in was newly elected Chief Craig Makinaw. Craig mentioned that there should be monthly
meetings again with the membership and that he wants to work with the other four band Chiefs to address some
problems. Next up to be sworn in was Daniel Makinaw. Sam Minde, Conrad Young and Collin Wildcat were after
Daniel.
Elder Gordon Lee said a few words to the people when all the Councillors and Chief were sworn in. Gordon had advice
for the new leaders and afterward the Drum Group Northstar ended the ceremony with an Honor Song. Wilton
Littlechild mentioned that in the old days, it was the duty of the people who witnessed the swearing in ceremony to
go tell the rest of what they saw today.
