Swearing In of the New Chief & Councillors<br />

On <strong>Oct</strong>ober 3rd, <strong>2011</strong>, the new <strong>Ermineskin</strong> Chief and four<br />

Councillors were sworn in at the Elders Centre. Lawyer Wilton<br />

Littlechild did the official swearing in and Randy Littlechild,<br />

Maskwacis Health Services, did the MC duties. Constable Perry<br />

Cardinal salutes the <strong>Ermineskin</strong> Flag during the Honour Song.<br />

<strong>Oct</strong>ober 16th, <strong>2011</strong> is World Food Day. “Price swings, upswings<br />

in particular, represent a major threat to food security in<br />

developing countries. Hardest hit are the poor. According to the<br />

World Bank, in 2010-<strong>2011</strong> rising food costs pushed nearly 70<br />

million people into extreme poverty” (www.fao.org).<br />

September 24th, <strong>2011</strong>, was the Maskwacis Cultural College’s<br />

Graduation. This was MCC‟s 23rd Annual graduation and the<br />

theme for this year was „Awina Niya-Who Am I?‟ Congratulations<br />

to Jamie Carlson and the other Designate Honours students<br />

on your achievements. The <strong>Ermineskin</strong>, Montana, Samson and<br />

Louis Bull Nations are big supporters of the college and deserve<br />

recognition for their efforts and support.<br />

On September 30th, <strong>2011</strong>,<br />

Dennis Whitebear Sr. was<br />

elected Councillor. Five<br />

hundred and sixty six (566)<br />

<strong>Ermineskin</strong> band members<br />

voted this round so that<br />

means 27.8% of the people<br />

voted in this election.<br />

Dennis captured 24.3% of<br />

the vote while second place<br />

finisher Bruce Lee got<br />

19.4%. Gordon Minde came<br />

in third and took 19.2% of<br />

the vote.<br />

new position and thanks to<br />

all the people who supported<br />

the nation through voting.

<strong>Ermineskin</strong> Adult Literacy Program Students & Staff <strong>2011</strong><br />

Pictured above is the Adult Literacy students and staff for the <strong>2011</strong>-2012 semester. There<br />

are twenty students this year and the spaces were all filled. Eleanor Roan is the Coordinator<br />

and Robin Sims, who dances Men‟s Golden Age by the way, is the instructor and Caroline<br />

Omeasoo is the Education Assistant. The program started back in 2000. This year the program<br />

began on September 26th, <strong>2011</strong>, and runs to May 11th, 2012. The students usually start off<br />

here and then move onto the Norquest College in Wetaskiwin or to the Maskwacis Cultural<br />

College (MCC) in Hobbema, which is located on the Samson reserve.<br />

Jerry Roasting used to be a student at the adult literacy program but has since graduated from<br />

there and is now working at the Adult Literacy as a Cree Language Instructor Level Two. He<br />

graduated with a diploma in Cree Language Instructor Training.<br />

Chief & Council Swearing-In Ceremony<br />

On Monday <strong>Oct</strong>ober 3rd, <strong>2011</strong>, the new Chief and four Councillors were officially sworn in by Dr. J.<br />

Wilton Littlechild at the <strong>Ermineskin</strong> Elders Centre. Newly elected Councillor Dennis Whitebear Sr.<br />

was in attendance but was not officially sworn in yet and that will happen at a later date and the <strong>Ermineskin</strong> Newsletter<br />

will bring you the details. The swearing in began with a Pipe Ceremony at 8:30am that morning and the official<br />

swearing in ceremony began at 9:30am. Wetaskiwin Mayor Bill Elliot was in attendance as well as RCMP Superintendent<br />

Curtis Zablocki.<br />

The first to be sworn in was newly elected Chief Craig Makinaw. Craig mentioned that there should be monthly<br />

meetings again with the membership and that he wants to work with the other four band Chiefs to address some<br />

problems. Next up to be sworn in was Daniel Makinaw. Sam Minde, Conrad Young and Collin Wildcat were after<br />

Daniel.<br />

Elder Gordon Lee said a few words to the people when all the Councillors and Chief were sworn in. Gordon had advice<br />

for the new leaders and afterward the Drum Group Northstar ended the ceremony with an Honor Song. Wilton<br />

Littlechild mentioned that in the old days, it was the duty of the people who witnessed the swearing in ceremony to<br />

go tell the rest of what they saw today.<br />
