OLIVER CROY, ALL FANTASIES, GENTLEMEN ONLY, NO BOYS, 2006.
in May, Trenkel showed a series
of paintings made during her stay
in Marfa. In them, familiar Marfa
buildings were rendered unfamiliar—shorn
of ornament, stripped of
their names, subtly altered to emphasize
the way in which their low-lying,
block-like forms absorb the brilliant
West Texas sunlight.
Petra Trenkel studied at the Hochschule
für Bildende Künste, Städelschule,
in Frankfurt am Main, Germany,
from 1988 through 1995.
She has exhibited her work in group
and solo shows at the Galerie Martina
Detterer in Frankfurt am Main;
WBD and the Kunstraum Kreuzberg/
Bethanien in Berlin; and at the Museu
de Arte da Bahia in Salvador, Brazil.
In 2005 she received a year-long
artist’s residency in London from the
Hessische Kulturstiflung. Trenkel lives
and works in Berlin.
Oliver Croy
June-July 2006
The Austrian artist Oliver Croy concluded
his residency with an exhibition
at the Locker Plant. Croy’s work
ranges across a variety of media to
playfully engage different aspects of
contemporary architecture and real
estate. He is particularly interested in
alternative or unconventional types
of housing—the sort that has been
hand-built in out-of-the-way places by
solitary obsessives or small groups
of like-minded dreamers. Croy is
interested in the sometimes utopian,
sometimes purely practical concerns
which motivate people to build these
unorthodox structures, and in the
unusual, often cast-off materials employed
in their making. In his travels
through the American West and Europe
over the past several years, Croy
mayoría aburridos y utilitarios –cajas
útiles. Los lugares son vagos – ni ur-
banos ni rurales. Los paisajes no son
realmente paisajes. Con frecuencia la
artista enfatiza esta cualidad, colocan-
do amplios espacios vacíos en primer
término. Dichas estrategias imparten a
Kulturstiflung. Trenkel vive y trabaja en
Berlín.
Oliver Croy
Junio a julio de 2006
El artista austriaco Oliver Croy conclu-
yó su residencia con una exhibición en
el Locker Plant. Su obra participa de
varios medios, combinando jugueto-
75
has visited and photographed many
such sites, including ARCOSANTI
in Arizona, the Lama Foundation in
New Mexico, and the sprawling, adhoc
hippie/bum republic known as
Slab City in the California desert.
Croy’s 2003 film “Counter-Communities”
documents his trips to a number
of these sites. The artist has shown the
film at galleries in Berlin, Copenhagen,
London, Los Angeles, and other
cities, with an accompanying exhibition
of documentary material and artifacts
retrieved from the sites featured
in the film. Inspired by the visionaries,
cranks, and cracked dreamers
encountered in his travels, Croy has
constructed and exhibited some offbeat
structures of his own, including
an “Info-hut” made of egg trays and
cardboard (shown in Berlin in 2004)
and a trio of single-occupancy “Hermitages”
constructed from wood,
concrete, Plexiglas, and soda bottles,
shown in Copenhagen in 2004.
Croy has also compiled and edited
two books. Sondermodelle (Special
Models), published by Hatje Cantz
Verlag in 2001 and co-edited by
OLIVER CROY.
ocupaciones a veces utópicas, a veces
puramente prácticas que motivan a la
gente a construir estas estructuras poco
ortodoxas y también por los materiales
raros y con frecuencia desechados que
se emplean en su construcción. Duran-
californiano.
Su película “Contracomunidades”, del
año 2003, documenta sus viajes a una
serie de tales lugares. El artista ha pre-
sentado esta película en galerías en
Berlín, Copenhague, Londres, Los An-
geles y otras ciudades, junto con una
exhibición de materiales y artefactos
de tipo documental encontrados en
los sitios que aparecen en la película.
Inspirándose en los visionarios, ex-
céntricos y soñadores con los cuales
se ha topado en sus peregrinaciones,
Croy ha construido y exhibido algu-
nas estructuras nada comunes él mis-
mo, incluyendo una “choza informa-
tiva” hecha de bandejas para huevos
y cartón (exhibida en Berlín en 2004)
y tres “Ermitas” construidas de made-
ra, concreto, plexiglás y botellas de
refrescos, exhibidas en Copenhague
en 2004.
Croy también ha compilado y editado
dos libros. Sondermodelle (“Modelos
especiales”), publicado por Hatje Cantz
Verlag en 2001 y coeditado por Croy y
