cial interest in the nighttime sky. To
make his pictures he uses computerized
tracking instruments, an equatorial
tripod mount, telescopes, and
film that allows for long exposures to
be taken by correcting for the earth’s
rotation. The result of a long process
of looking and waiting, Nelms’s photographs
of the sky at night are calm
and contemplative, melding astronomy
into abstraction.
Brian Kirk Nelms received his MFA
in photography from the Cranbook
Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills,
Michigan in 2004. In summer 2004
he was an artist in residence at Cooper
Union in New York, where he
participated in a group show organized
by the school. He has also exhibited
work as part of group shows
at the Cranbook Art Museum, the
Richard M. Ross Art Museum at Ohio
Weslyan University, and the University
of Texas at Austin.
Petra Trenkel
March-May 2006
Petra Trenkel is an artist from Berlin
who makes paintings and drawings
that depict the way contemporary
architecture interacts with its natural
surroundings. Trenkel’s work portrays
functional structures: office parks,
apartment complexes, row housing,
and small-scale commercial or industrial
buildings. These plain structures
show little in the way of ornament
and few signs of human presence.
Their facades tend toward the bland
and featureless. Trenkel often sets her
contemplativas y metamorfosean la as-
buildings in minimally adorned landscapes,
sometimes expressed as a
wide swath of empty space. Here or
there a tree may appear—or a bench,
or a light pole. In these unoccupied
zones, shadows elongate and light
reaches to create subtle gradations
of color. A sense of stillness seems to
hover over the paintings.
Trenkel works slowly, applying thin
layers of paint in an even hand and
with a muted palette. While using
photos as source material, she does
not take a strictly documentary approach
to her subjects. She freely
rearranges and edits the elements
in her paintings, and often the buildings
and landscapes she depicts are
composites. The models for Trenkel’s
scenes are usually to be found in her
native Germany—or, in the case of
a series of paintings from 2005, in
England. But there are no specific
referents, no details to signal country
or region. These paintings could
be set anywhere, or nowhere. The
buildings are mostly drab and utilitarian—boxes
with a use. The locations
are vague: not urban, not rural,
not quite suburban. The landscapes
pictured aren’t really landscapes.
The artist often accentuates this quality
by foregrounding large stretches
of empty space. These strategies
imbue Trenkel’s work with a subtle
ambiguity. The sites she portrays feel
both specific and generic. They are
entirely manmade, made for the use
of people, yet they appear to be deserted.
For all the signs of presence,
a sense of vacancy lingers.
Petra Trenkel
Marzo-mayo 2006
Petra Trenkel, una artista de Berlín,
hace pinturas y dibujos que reflejan la
manera como la arquitectura contempo-
ránea interactúa con su entorno natural.
Su obra representa las estructuras fun-
cionales: edificios de oficinas, comple-
jos habitacionales, casas residenciales
y pequeños edificios comerciales e in-
dustriales. Estas escuetas estructuras
presentan poca ornamentación y dan
pocos indicios de la presencia huma-
na.
Trenkel trabaja despacio, aplicando
capas delgadas y parejas de pintura
y usando colores asordinados. Aunque
parte de fotografías, no adopta un en-
foque estrictamente documental. Más
bien, reacomoda y edita libremente
los elementos en sus pinturas, y con
frecuencia sus edificios y paisajes son
vistas compuestas.
