When I took seven years off from working with
painted metal I did three kinds of sculpture: I
squeezed and tied foam rubber; I melted plexiglass;
I wadded aluminum foil.
Cuando dejé de trabajar con el metal
pintado durante siete años, me de-
diqué a hacer tres tipos de escultura:
apretar y amarrar el hule espuma,
derretir el plexiglás y arrugar el papel
de aluminio.
I deal with new material as I see fit in terms of my
decision making, which has to do primarily with
sexual and intuitive thinking. I am told, to a lesser
degree, what to do by the material itself. As an
artist I am aware that I have to know when to stop,
but the deciding factor has more to do with what I
present myself with; that is, with the position I get
into to deal with new material.
Manejo el material nuevo como mejor
me convenga, tomando en cuenta mi
proceso de toma de decisiones, que
tiene que ver principalmente con el
pensamiento sexual e intuitivo. En gra-
do menor, el material mismo me dice
lo que debo hacer con él. Como artista
estoy consciente de que necesito saber
cuándo parar, pero el factor decisivo
depende más que nada de lo que yo
me presento a mí mismo, es decir, la
posición que asumo para manejar el
nuevo material.

Sexuality is the childlikeness in me and the articulation
comes through my intuition. My sense of
nature is my ability to make decisions based on
the sexual and intuitive aspects of my psyche. The
intellectual and emotional aspects have little role
in my work.
La sexualidad es la cualidad infantil en
mí, y la articulación se manifiesta por
medio de mi intuición. Mi sentido de la
naturaleza es mi capacidad de tomar
decisiones con base en los aspectos
sexuales e intuitivos de mi psique. Los
aspectos intelectual y emocional jue-
gan un papel menor en mi obra.
I’ve done pieces, for example, on which were
piled as many as 40 to 50 parts, but none was
totally interlocked, or welded. That is the sexual
fit. Intuition, however, may have made me remove
some, or many, of the parts.
He hecho ciertas piezas, por ejemplo,
en las que se hallan apiladas hasta
40 ó 50 partes, ninguna de las cuales
encajaba totalmente con las demás
ni estaba soldada. Ése es el acomodo
sexual. Sin embargo, la intuición tal
vez me haya obligado a quitar algu-
nas o muchas de las partes.
Intuition will indicate when something is not acceptable,
even though it might work. That it works
is not necessarily enough. It can be acceptable,
but something more is needed. The fine line is that
it is either junk, or art materials, or it is a piece of
work.
La intuición indicará cuando algo no
es aceptable, aunque ese algo pueda
funcionar bien. El que funcione no es
necesariamente suficiente. Puede ser
aceptable, pero hace falta algo más. Es
muy tenue la línea divisoria entre una
porquería, un simple montón de mate-
riales artísticos y una obra de arte.
