ists who have combined old and
new elements.
Mr. Press, a relief eight feet across
and four deep, is in part a diagonal
mass across a vertical one and
is in whole a radiating, swastika
structure. A dish cloth of red stripes,
several fragments and a right angle
of a bumper, which trips the rotation
from the center, which is the highest
part of the relief. The lower half
of the diagonal is a white fender
and a cream one, joined to leave
a straight, fast cut. The high half
is a cream door, folded once. Its
chrome is pulled across the fold
to make a reverse continuation of
the lines of the fenders. The vertical
section extends at the top and
at the bottom and is made of dark
colors, red above and a dull brownish-red,
a deep yellow and a violet
below. The color, as is apparent, is
structural. The combination of pastel
colors and dark and intense ones is
characteristic, novel, and excellent.
The details are decidedly structural.
A cerulean stripe on a hood, for
example, one of the many radial
elements and intermediate between
the two main sections, is canted
from the horizontal slightly, partially
causing the vertical mass to tilt and
the whole to rotate.
Essex, another relief, is a large,
dense bow-shaped mass with a
pendant keel. Huzzy is mainly a
diagonal slash flipped free at the
top in reversing flukes. There is one
sculpture in which a white climbs
and folds and a black drops as a
cumbrous point. These are all magnificent.
The free-standing pieces often
have offset or dropped sections,
horizontal parts which truncate vertical
ones or parts thrust in or out
of a mass or wrapped around it.
The structures and the shapes are
those of the movement of things. The
surfaces depict this movement. The
imagery is either this alone or is
organic as well. The resemblance
to everything, because of the close
means and the objective aspects, is
remarkably remote. This allows the
turbulence of the material an independent
power.
“YOUNG ARTISTS
AT THE FAIR”
ART IN AMERICA,
AUGUST 1964
John Chamberlain was the first to
use automobile metal and to use
color successfully in sculpture. He in-
La mitad in-
ferior de la diagonal es un guardafan-
go blanco unido a otro color crema.
do tienen secciones desviadas hacia un
lado o hacia abajo, partes horizontales
que truncan partes verticales, o partes
que entran o salen de la masa o que la
envuelven. Las estructuras y las formas
son las del movimiento de las cosas. Las
superficies representan este movimien-
to.
24
troduced the developments of American
expressionism into sculpture
and challenged the prevailing idea
of sculpture as a solid mass. The
appearance of chance and casualness
and the insolidity have perhaps
destroyed the old idea of sculpture.
There is a strong polarity in his
sculpture between the bent and voluminous
automobile metal and the
structure which it forms. There seems
to be more metal and space than
the structure requires. Chance and
a casual freedom seem to exceed
the order within the work. Reality
seems considerably more capacious
than any order it holds. This disparity
between reality and its order is
the most radical and important aspect
of Chamberlain’s sculpture. The
order that is present is highly developed,
comparable in kind and
excellence to Baroque sculpture. The
large scale of the pieces at the exhibit
required the expansion of the
usual elements of each artist’s work.
Chamberlain’s relief is constructed
on a truck chassis.
“IN THE GALLERIES”
ARTS MAGAZINE,
SEPTEMBER 1964
Chamberlain’s sculpture involves a
considerable discrepancy between
its expressionistic composition and
its neutral appearance as smashed
automobile metal, and also between
the composition and the voluminousness
of the metal, the appearance of
redundancy. In most of the pieces in
the show, most small, around a foot
and a half by two, the composition
dominates. Chamberlain’s composition
in itself is not so remarkable,
and so neither are these pieces.
They aren’t up to Chamberlain’s usual
work. A medium-sized sculpture,
Bags Down, a yard or so around,
is much better. Chamberlain’s sculpture
needs at least this size. In the
smaller pieces the materiality and
voluminousness of the metal show
less and the parts and their arrangements
show more. Also, instead of
using the color as it comes, Chamberlain
has sprayed purple, red,
blue and other automobile colors
on the pieces. This cleans them
up—they obviously aren’t scrap metal—and
further defines their parts.
Also, so far, this color is fairly pretty.
Chamberlain can probably do a lot
with the sprayed paint, but to do
this he may have to change some of
the other aspects of his work.
lain. Una escultura de mediano tamaño,
Bags Down, con una circunferencia de
aproximadamente un metro, es mucho
mejor.
partes. Además, hasta ahora, este color
es suficientemente agradable. Cham-
berlain probablemente puede lograr
mucho con la pintura en aerosol, pero
hacerlo así implicaría cambiar algunos
otros aspectos de su trabajo.
