SHEIKH FAISAL BIN QASSIM AL THANI MUSEUM
Greater Doha, State of Qatar, 2012 – 2013
Plan
Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani
Museum first opened in 1998 with
a vision to preserve and display the
different collections of arts and artifacts
accumulated from all around the world
over the years by prominent Qatari
collector Sheikh Faisal. The museum
houses a vast and diverse collection
celebrating and showcasing pre-Islamic
and Islamic coins, Islamic art and
various decorative artworks including
ceramics and weaponry dating from the
Omayyad dynasty to the beginning of the
20th-century.
The collection focuses mainly on Middle
Eastern and Islamic history and culture,
reflecting the interest of the Qatari
people in their national heritage and
cultural identity; a cultural movement
supported by Sheikh Faisal himself. This
Qatari heritage collection celebrates the
important components of the nation’s
history, from the fabrics and tents of
the Bedouin life through to gulf doves
and pearl fishing devises. The museum
also contains some of the finest and
most important examples of Arabic
manuscripts, fine arts and militaria.
In addition, the collection also includes
a very popular and extensive vehicle
collection comprising vintage and classic
cars, among which is a late 19th-century
steam car, besides a rare Ford-T, 1930s
Buicks, 1940s Desoto and old Dodge
utility vehicles. PROMONTORIO as
been invited to redesign the reception and
adjoin areas; namely, gift shop, cafeteria
and administration, in addition to a
temporary gallery. This is the first part
of a much more ambitious project, which
comprises the expansion of new museum
wings and restructuring of large part of
the permanent exhibition display.
