From the Headmaster
Leadership Address 2011
When I was at school, one of the most common
events in my life was when we chose teams. I’m
sure each of you here knows what I am talking
about. The teacher or the coach says this: OK
Joe and Adam, you are the captains, stand over
here. Off you go. Pick your teams. Hands would
go up immediately. The most skilled at that activity
would be chosen fi rst, followed by friends with
skills, followed by friends without skills followed
by non-friends with allegedly no skills. It could be
a pretty brutal process. However, it was a system
understood by everyone. I remember experiencing
different things. When it was swimming or
basketball I was chosen earlier on. When it was
Rugby League or Athletics I was often chosen last.
When it was debating I was often chosen fi rst. I
remember only once in my life being chosen as the
captain of a team.
You might remember that during my last speech
I told you that I was going to my class reunion
during the holidays. All the people at that reunion
were the same people being chosen for the
teams I was in 35 years ago. The team captains
were there. The people chosen first were there.
The people chosen last were there. The biggest
discovery I made at my reunion was that, no
matter what happened 35 years ago in relation to
leadership, every single person there had become
a leader of something since that time.
Today everyone is here, except our pre-schoolers.
When talking about leadership, we can probably
divide the whole group into three.
The fi rst group is those boys who, for a variety of
reasons, do not put their hands up for leadership.
The second group is those boys who put their
hands up for leadership, and are not chosen.
The third group is those boys put their hands up for
leadership and are chosen.
No matter which group you belong to today, there
are risks and opportunities fl owing from your
decisions. If you haven’t put up your hand at all,
you have the opportunity to pursue other things or
you have the opportunity to support someone else.
If you don’t take these opportunities, you risk the
chance to grow as a contributing member of the
community.
For those of you who put your hand up but were
not elected, you have already taken a risk.
From the Headmaster - continued...
You have put yourself out there and have had to
deal with not being chosen – this time. However,
you have taken the opportunity to demonstrate
courage and confi dence. You have learned how
to absorb disappointment and embrace the next
challenge. You will be the group you will defi ne
leadership more broadly as you continue to be
proactive, assertive contributors to the school.
For those of you who put your hand up and have
been elected, you will receive a badge. You will be
in an offi cial photo. You will have a special lunch
with your parents. You have already taken a risk in
putting your hand up. However, the biggest risk or
challenge you now face is in accepting the badge
of offi ce and reading the leadership pledge. That
is because elected leaders are accountable to the
community. The very way you conduct yourselves
and work even harder for the community is under
scrutiny. You will have a public role which requires
you to speak, act and challenge in a way which
uphold the values of an Edmund Rice School – that
you liberate, include, act as Jesus did and reach
out to others.
These are both opportunities and risks.
No matter which of these three groups you belong
to, everyone here has the gifts of leadership.
No matter which group you belong to, you will be
called upon – sometimes with plenty of warning,
sometimes without notice – to be a leader.
We have a leadership system in this school for the
I encourage your attendance at the fundraiser for
be purchased on the College website.
Blood Donation
About half of all Year 11 have volunteered to give
blood this year. I have organized for the Red Cross
shuttle bus to come every Wednesday afternoon
to take students to the Blood Bank. If your son
same reasons as there are systems in all areas
of society. Human beings look for people who
exemplify the particular qualities of leadership
that are needed at a particular time. It is human
to need leadership and it is human to seek
leadership. A system is put in place when a
community does not want to lose something of
value. The challenge for these systems is that
they remain relevant, hopeful and life-giving.
Our fi rst reading today mentions the gifts of the
Holy Spirit and suggests that leadership is about
being respectful, wise, understanding, informed,
ethical and reverent human beings, that we are
enabled by the Spirit of God. These gifts were
possessed by Jesus who recognised the hidden,
untapped, emerging leadership of his disciples as
he washed their feet.
Ultimately, leadership is about liberating the
potential of others which in turn gives you more
freedom as a person.
In concluding, I put this question to all who seek
or need leadership. Are you aware of the gifts you
have? Do you think about the potential of others?
Do you limit or restrict the potential of others by
your words, actions or attitudes? If you were
chosen to be the captain of a team tomorrow, how
would you handle that task?
Call for Clothing Pool Volunteers
We are seeking parent volunteers to help run the
Waverley College Clothing Pool. The Clothing
Pool is the College’s second-hand uniform shop,
which sells quality recycled garments.
Our operating hours are:
- Monday from 9am to 12pm, and
- Wednesdays from 2pm to 5pm
This is a valuable service to the Waverley College
community and volunteering is a great way to
contribute to College life and get to know other
parents.
Mona Sluce has run the shop single-handedly
over the past year with help from only three
volunteers. Unfortunately she will not be available
next year as she is a Year 12 2011 grandmother,
so unless new volunteers are found some
closures may occur.
We warmly welcome parents, grandparents and
carers to get involved, even those who can only
commit to helping-out once a Term.
If you can help, please contact Trisha Scibberras
on 0409 026 806.
A volunteer form is also attached to this newsletter
and can be returned by your son to the main
school reception.
Year 5 Camp
A reminder that all boys in Year 5 will be attending
the camp at Vision Valley on Wednesday
November 2 to Friday November 4. Thank you
to all the parents for ensuring that all medical
forms were returned on time. We are still waiting
on the letter from some parents. As this letter is
an important part of the camp program can I ask
you to send it in to school by the end of the week
marked “Confi dential” across the top of envelope
and addressed “To Mr Banboukjian - Year 5” with
your son’s name clearly marked on the front.
Exams
Yearly exams will be held for Year 5 in Week 3 and
for Year 6 in Week 4 of this term. The timetable is
Prayer for the Week
On 17th October, we
celebrated the one
year anniversary of the
canonisation of St Mary of
the Cross, Australia’s first
saint. Mary MacKillop loved
God and always listened
to what God was saying to
her throughout the events in
her life. She always asked
God for help and showed
extraordinary kindness and
compassion to those in need.
Response: St Mary of the
Cross pray for us.
We pray for our country
Australia, that all people will
be treated fairly:
St Mary of the Cross pray for
us.
For people who can’t fi nd
work and people who are too
poor to pay their bills:
St Mary of the Cross pray for
us.
For people who are sad and
lonely: St Mary of the Cross
pray for us.
For people who are sick or
dying and for the strength of
their families:
St Mary of the Cross pray for
us.
For people who live in families
that are unhappy: St Mary of
the Cross pray for us.
For people who leave their
own countries because of war
and violence:
St Mary of the Cross pray for
us.
We ask God who cares for us
in every way to listen to our
prayers through the help of St
Mary (MacKillop) of the Cross.
We ask this through Christ our
Lord
Amen.
A new Charter for Catholic Schools in the Edmund
Rice Tradition: Part 2 - Our Story
The revised Edmund Rice Education Australia
(EREA) Charter was launched on Monday 22
August at St James College Brisbane by Brother
Philip Pinto, the Congregational Leader of the
Christian Brothers.
Over coming weeks Nurrunga will feature the
entire Charter, section by section. This week,
the second part - Our Story. Should you wish to
read the Charter in its entirety, it can be viewed
God’s living presence
Since the beginning of time God has been present.
This presence was expressed poetically in the
biblical creation stories and can be found in
humanity’s modern understanding of the value
of creation and responsibility to live in respectful
harmony with the earth. Over the millennia, life on
earth developed to a point where it could refl ect
upon God’s presence in history leading men and
women to seek to understand the “breadth and
length and height and depth” of God’s love (Eph
3:18). They also sought to live in accordance with
this understanding and to share this gift with others.
This story of discovery is encapsulated in the story
of a people who responded to a call to listen and
be God’s people. Their wisdom brought to the
generations a concept of a God who is One and
who desires all humanity to be one also. It was into
this story that Jesus was born.
Jesus Christ
Empowered by the Spirit, Jesus named and
inaugurated his mission in the synagogue at
Nazareth drawing on the wisdom of the prophet
Isaiah:
‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’
(Luke 4:18-19)
Nurtured by his Jewish tradition in this way and
inspired by the Spirit, Jesus proclaimed a message
of justice, peace and solidarity, especially with
the poor and marginalised. The challenge Jesus
issued in Nazareth and enacted in his ministry
–the challenge to include those who are so often
excluded because of their situation in life - has
continued in the lives of his followers down the
ages. It is the same challenge that inspired
Edmund Rice to “open his whole heart to Christ
present and appealing to him in the poor” (Christian
Brothers’ Charism Statement, 1982).
Edmund Rice
Born in Callan, Ireland, in 1762, Edmund came to
the bustling city port of Waterford as a young man.
He was talented and energetic and soon became
very wealthy. Married to Mary Elliot, in 1789 he
experienced her tragic death soon after she gave
birth to their daughter Mary. Deeply saddened by
her loss, Edmund entered a time of mourning. As
his daughter continued to open the depths of his
love, his relationship with God deepened. In his
own brokenness, he was moved with compassion
to recognise the brokenness of those around him.
He entered more deeply into their struggle and
found in the story of Jesus the call to liberation that
is at the heart of what Jesus preached and in which
his church is engaged. The Ireland of Edmund’s
day was an unjust place where many lived in
poverty and social structures deeply oppressed the
majority of the population. In 1802 he set up a free
school for boys living in poverty. His aim was to
promote an education that recognised the dignity of
each individual and thus he sought to liberate them
from their ignorance of God of their Catholic faith,
while at the same time empowering them with an
education which would enable them to rise from the
demeaning poverty and sense of hopelessness in
which they were trapped. Thus Edmund sought to
liberate individuals and indeed to free his society
from oppression.
Christian Brothers
Other men were drawn to Edmund and his work
of justice for those made poor. They lived together
in community and were professed as Brothers,
along with Edmund, in 1808. By 1825 Edmund
Rice and his 30 Brothers were educating free of
charge over 5,500 boys in 12 different towns and
cities. Many boys were also being clothed and
fed. The year 1825 also saw the expansion of the
Brothers’ response to God’s call to provide the
same liberating education for the poor in countries
beyond Ireland, including the establishment in due
course of over 120 schools in Australia. Christian
Brothers and other members of the Edmund Rice
Network are now working in over 30 countries
across the globe. They are continuing to discern
the signs of the times and respond to the needs
of the poor and the earth, while working towards
a just and sustainable future for all. The work of
the Brothers continues to inspire all involved in our
schools.
Edmund Rice Education Australia
The Christian Brothers story in Australia is a vibrant
and creative response to the educational needs of
the day. The formation of Edmund Rice Education
Australia (EREA) by the Christian Brothers in 2007
continues and renews this creative response.
EREA, as part of the mission of the Catholic
Church, is charged with the responsibility for the
governance of the Christian Brothers’ schools
throughout Australia, to ensure that Edmund’s
charism lives on in this work at a time when the
Brothers are being called to new directions within a
shared vision.
Sports Master’s Report
Last Saturday some boys had sports trials or
fi xtures. Unfortunately due to the weather many
of our cricket, cycling, lawn bowls and tennis
trials were washed out. It is important that all
students are aware of their selections for teams
this weekend. It is also very important that they
attend the correct training sessions. Most teams
and sports are now on notice-boards. Can I please
reiterate the point that no teams are set in concrete
and that coaches are encouraged to make changes
based on performance but also if expectations in
training, behaviour and attire are not met.
This weekend sees the fi rst round for many teams
in CAS Summer sport. However, our 1sts, 2nds,
10A & 9A cricket teams all played last weekend.
The 2nd XI and 9A’s had comprehensive victories
with excellent performances from Darby Murphy
and Ravin de Silva. Our Water Polo teams also had
some excellent wins. Samuel Pointer in the 1st XI
was also selected this week to represent the NSW
CIS cricket team – congratulations on behalf of the
College.
Along with these events, last weekend saw
the NSW All Schools Athletics Carnival. Whilst
many boys represented the school in a range of
events, there were two stand-out competitors.
David Buckland won the U/16 100m and Brendan
Madeira won the U/15 Long Jump and 100m
Hurdles. Both of these young men will now
represent NSW and the College at the national
titles. Not only are all of the athletes that competed
from Waverley College last weekend good
athletes they are also fi ne assets and demonstrate
the commitment and determination typical of
Waverley’s reputation in sport.
This Friday night, our 1st V Basketball will play
St Aloysius away and also Trinity will host the
fi rst swim carnival of the season. Good luck to all
students involved in these events.
This week all of the captains of the summer sport
were announced, along with the 1sts teams.
Congratulations to the following:
• Cricket – Ryan Faulkner-Hogg (1st XI captain)
• Cricket – Will Paterson (captain)
• Basketball – Patrick Byrne (1st V captain)
• Basketball – Patrick Duffy (captain)
• Tennis – Timur Nami (1st IV captain)
• Tennis – Victor Moffroid (captain)
• Water Polo – Jesse Johnston (captain)
• Lawn Bowls – Chris Theos (captain)
• Diving – Mitchell Rawson (co-captain)
• Diving – Will Hannigan (co-captain)
Cricket Report: Round 1 v St Aloysius College
1st XI v SAC Day 2
The day started on time with Waverley in deep
trouble at 7 for 47. Opener Jack Whitaker was still
at the crease and partnered by James Healey.
Unfortunately in just the third over James Healey
popped one to short leg. This saw Dean Jones
stride to the crease and he denied the bowlers for
49 minutes and was out caught behind. Jordan
Wilson fought hard and helped the score to 96
before he was trapped lbw leaving Jack Whitaker
unbeaten on 29. A rare feat for an opener to carry
his bat through the innings. Waverley was asked
to bat again and had to survive 10 minutes before
lunch, this they did and the lunch score stood at 0
for 5. Soon after the break with the total on 9 Jack
Whitaker was bowled and just 2 balls later James
Maunsell guided the ball to slip. Two overs on with
only 2 added to the score Christian Cuenca was
caught behind. This saw Ryan Faulkner-Hogg and
Sam Pointer come together and begin a promising
partnership. Then, just one over before tea with the
total now on 82, Ryan Faulkner-Hogg was bowled
again playing back.
After the tea break the score moved to 109 before
William Paterson fl ashed at one to be caught
behind. Ben O’Donnell joined Joey Zieme and the
score had reached 118 when he attempted to hit
over midwicket only to sky for a well taken catch.
Joey Zieme looked very comfortable and posted
50 runs only to hit a catch back to the bowler
just 2 balls before drinks. This left Waverley at 8
for 144 with an hour to play to avoid an outright
loss. James Healey did a fi ne job until at 4.28pm
he was bowled for 34. Dean Jones and Jordan
Wilson set about batting out the fi nal 30 minutes
however this was not to be as Dean Jones skied
one to be caught and bowled at 4.39pm with the
Waverley total on 168. The second inning showed
some good elements and has given everyone
plenty to work on before this week’s game against
Cranbrook at Queens Park.
The 2nd XI had a fi ne victory. Batting fi rst they
posted a total of 175 with Harry Pepper 40 and
Justin Hazelbrook 38. Waverley began well in the
fi eld with Nathan Burt and Thomas Duffy each
claiming an early wicket. Darby Murphy was the
match winner bowling his leg breaks, fi nishing with
the fi gures of 5 for 29 from 14 overs to dismiss
SAC for 81.
The 10A side chased a total of 4 dec for 221 and
at 2 for 40 were in the game. Wickets tumbled
and only Joshua Burke with 14 showed real
resistance. The side was bundled out for 76 and
asked to bat again found themselves again in
trouble at 7 for 27. Thankfully the tail held out to
fi nish the day at 7 for 40, giving SAC 1st Innings
points.
The 9A had a solid victory with skipper Ravin De
Silva having a great match. He was involved in a
fi ne opening partnership with Jackson Eldridge
(69 not out) contributing 49 out of the Waverley
total of 1 for 169. He then turned the ball square to
claim 5 for 9 and take the side to victory with SAC
all out for 120.
