Pentecost
As we approach this important feast in the
Christian Calendar, I offer a refl ection on what
it means to belong to a “church”. In the Acts
of the Apostles, the earliest group of believers
gathers in an upper room, hiding from the
authorities following the crucifixion of Jesus.
Many have experienced appearances by
Jesus and the news is spreading that he has
risen. These early gatherings by the followers
of Jesus were characterized by breaking bread together, recounting the
teachings of Jesus and helping the poor. They demonstrate courage,
great trust and an acceptance of risk as they struggle to build a church in
a very hostile environment.
These very actions are visible in the Church today. In the midst of a
secular society, we continue to gather, break bread, recount the stories
of Jesus and work for justice. Waverley College continues to celebrate
its identity as a Catholic School through learning, ritual, action for justice,
refl ection on the religious journey and celebration of tradition. In our
Strategic Plan, we highlight Beliefs and Life in our key domains. The
following challenges will be placed before parents, staff and students in
an ongoing way as we move into the future:
• Continually refl ecting on our beliefs and practices.
• Forming each other as people of faith with a sense of confi dence in
our achievements, our traditions and our mission as an Edmund Rice
school.
• Evaluating the world and contributing to change now and beyond
school.
• Forming each other as courageous, respectful, wise, understanding,
informed, ethical and reverent human beings (Isaiah 11:2-3 “The
Gifts of the Spirit”).
Our responses to these challenges present a dynamic reality of what it
means to be “church” and how a school community should contribute
to the life and development of the Church. I encourage all students
to consider the ways in which they are courageous, wise, informed,
understanding, ethical, reverent and respectful in their dealings with each
other and those they meet.
Mr Ray Paxton, Headmaster
Jesus Christ Superstar
Waverley College’s co-production with St Clare’s College of the
70’s rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar was staged last Thursday,
Friday and Saturday to acclaim from a total audience of 2,400.
Congratulations to all who
participated in the production
for outstanding performances.
Look for our special feature in
next week’s edition.
Prayer for the Week
On Sunday 12th June, Christians will celebrate Pentecost, the feast held
50 days after Easter. We give thanks to God for the gift of the Holy Spirit.
The coming of the Holy Spirit gave courage to the frightened disciples.
They went out to tell others about Jesus. The Holy Spirit helps us to carry
on the work of Jesus and gives us new life.
God of Peace,
We pray that our Church will be guided by the Holy Spirit and that all
Christians will live in peace, united by the Holy Spirit.
We ask this through Christ our Lord,
Amen.
Policy for Absenteeism
If you need to take your son out of school for an appointment (i.e., doctor
or dentist etc), can I please ask that you write a note in his diary to inform
his teacher of this and the time you need to pick him up so they can
organize to send him to the offi ce.
If your son is ill please contact the Junior School and report him as
absent. On his return to school this needs to be followed up with a letter
confirming the absence (do not use his diary for this purpose please as
we need have to keep this note on file).
If you are sent an SMS regarding your son’s absence, it is very important
that you contact the school. Failure to do this leads to him being classed
as an unexplained absence. Thank you for your support in this area.
Canteen
The canteen is trialing new lunch time specials to make the most of the
new oven that was installed earlier in the year. Your support would be
greatly appreciated. If there is adequate support the canteen will issue a
new menu sheet to all the boys. The upcoming specials are as follows:
a chance to learn, improve and develop basic and fundamental skills
including shooting, dribbling, passing, rebounding and defense as
well as being a great way for the boys to stay active during the school
holidays, in a fun and safe environment. The camp will be run by Dean
Papandreas and a range of professional coaches from a variety of
basketball backgrounds.
Edmund Rice Basketball Tournament
In addition to the basketball camp being run by Waverley College, St.
Dominic’s School in Penrith is hosting a basketball tournament for
Edmund Rice schools across Australia. Interested students are invited
to represent Waverley College in this tournament. The tournament
will be held on the 8th, 9th and 10th of July, and there is no charge for
participation.
Other Edmund Rice Schools from all over Australia will be attending and
the level of competition is sure to be high. This will be a great opportunity
for students to compete in a national competition with schools outside
of the CAS competition, and is a great way for the boys to experience
playing a high standard of basketball.
It was a cold night on the streets on Friday night but the warmth and
friendliness of the homeless people more than compensated. I know
many of the homeless people from taking students to the Matt Talbot
Hostel every week. The students on Friday night were surprised at
how open many of the homeless people were. One client I know from
the Talbot shared the story of a schizophrenic episode he had that
week. He spoke of the importance of human contact for men such as
him without home or family. I often say to the boys, Night Patrol is not
about sandwiches and coffee it is about offering the hand of friendship
to our fellow human beings. I feel that we get back twice as much as
we give. Many thanks to Geraldine and Stuart Rutherford for helping
us make the sandwiches.
Twenty fi ve young mentally and physically disabled people had a
wonderful time at Funky Sunday in the College Hall. Thanks to Matt
Young and Simon Black for helping me prepare the morning tea and
dancing with our guests. Funky Sunday is always a very upbeat, feel
good experience for everyone involved.
Last Saturday saw some great results, including outstanding victories to
the 2nd XI, 3rd XV, 15A rugby and 9A Football. There were also some
unfortunate losses, including the 1st XV.
There is no sport this weekend to cater for representative teams.
We have had a number of students recently selected as part of the
representative groups - I would like to congratulate and acknowledge
the following students and staff:
• Rhys Beccaris – NSW Tennis
• Samuel Negus – NSW Water Polo
• Will Paterson – CAS Rugby
• Jack Johnson – CAS Rugby
• Haynes Wileman – CAS Rugby
• Nathan Steyn – CAS Rugby
• Andrew Coles – CAS Rugby
• Tobias Cipolla – CAS Rugby
• Chris Talakai – CAS Training squad
• Charles Ingram-Melson – CAS Training squad
• Max Sherry – CAS Football
• Jordan Kennedy – CAS Football
• Justin Hazelbrook – CAS Football
• Mr Patrick Darvill – CAS I Football Coach
• Mr Hugo Engele – CAS U’16 II Coach
These students will be representing not only the school but the CAS and
have some great opportunities to go even further.
In this edition of Nurrunga I have included the CAS guidelines for players
and spectators and strongly encourage all members of the school
community to thoroughly acquaint themselves with these. Please apply
your best behaviour to every Waverley game, whether as a player or a
spectator.
I would like to remind you that Waverley College also has a strict
IT Code of Conduct which forbids the posting of inappropriate or
defamatory comments on social networks and websites.
Mr Steve O’Donnell, Sports Master
• Recognise the value and importance of coaches.
• They give of their time and resources to provide recreational activities
for your son and other boys and deserve your support.
Spectators
• We encourage boys to support their school teams and to be dressed
in the school’s uniform while doing so.
• We expect barracking to be enthusiastic but not to be fanatical or
designed to heckle or belittle or disturb the opponents.
• For example, barracking, for or against, during a kick at goal is
always bad sportsmanship.
• Boys should be encouraged to barrack for their school rather than for
an individual team member.
• Booing, whistling, playing or beating musical instruments are in bad
taste and wholly unacceptable.
• Vocal support for any team should never encourage violence or rough
or illegal play.
• Encroaching onto the fi eld of play, the shouting out of suggestions for
players, referees or umpires to hear are not allowed.
• It is never acceptable to express disapproval of a referee’s or
umpire’s decision - no matter whether the referee be adult or
schoolboy.
• There is a complete ban on all alcoholic drinks at grounds where
games between Associated Schools’ teams are being played.
• We expect our players to be modest in success and generous in
defeat, not showing in either case undue emotion.
• Good play, by our own school and by the opposing school, should be
applauded willingly and openly.
• At all times spectators should leave the area tidy and free of rubbish
when they leave.
• We look to adults (parents, Old Boys and other spectators) to set an
example by their self-control at matches.
CAS CODE OF CONDUCT
Players
• Play by the rules and in a spirit of good sportsmanship
• Play for the “fun of it” and not just to please parents and coaches.
• Control your temper. Verbal abuse of offi cials or other players,
deliberately fouling or provoking an opponent, and throwing
equipment are not acceptable nor permitted in any sport.
• Work hard both for yourself and your team. Your team’s
performance will benefi t, so will you.
• Treat all players as you would like to be treated. Do not interfere
with, bully or take unfair advantage of another player.
• Co-operate with your coach, team mates and opponents. Without
them there would be no game.
Parents
• Focus upon the boy’s efforts and performance rather than the
overall outcome of the game.
• This assists the boy in setting realistic goals related to his ability by
reducing emphasis on winning.
• Teach your son that an honest effort is as important as victory,
so that the result of the game is accepted without undue
disappointment.
• Encourage your always to play according to the rules of the game.
• Never ridicule or yell at your son or another boy for making a
mistake or losing a game.
• Remember boys are involved in organised sports for their benefi t
and enjoyment, not yours.
• Remember that children learn best from example. Applaud good
play by both teams.
• If you disagree with an offi cial, raise the issue through the
appropriate channels rather than question the offi cial’s judgement
and honesty in public.
• Remember most offi cials give their time and effort voluntarily for
your son’s benefi t.
• Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from
sporting activities.
Cross Country Meet 4 June 2011
St. Ignatius College hosted this Meet at home on their grounds at
Riverview on a tough course that was still holding a fair bit of moisture
making it tougher still.
165 runners contested the U/14 race which saw Finn Mergler run into 3rd
place (2nd CAS by Age) overall, followed by another good run from Jake
Bartholomaeus (9th CAS by Age) in 30th place and then Josh Causer
getting stronger.
Waverley had only Oscar Osborne trying for CAS honours in U/16’s and
he came in 51st place, just on the cusp of selection. The Open race
had 119 runners and Jordan Dunlop ran strongly to fi nish in 34th place,
followed by Elliot Toms in 58th place.
This was the Meet to decide the CAS Representative Team to compete
at the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) Championships at Eastern
Creek on Thursday week. The following boys were confi rmed in the team
to represent CAS at the time of this report:
U/13 - Finn Mergler
U/14 - Jake Bartholomaeus
U/16 - Jethro James (wild card)
U/17 - Jordan Dunlop
Open - Elliot Toms
Congratulations to these boys on their selection in the CAS team.
There is no Meet this long weekend. Next Meet is the Trinity Relay on
18th June at Ewen Park.
Mr. Peter Auer, MIC Cross Country
The Waverley College Music Festival will be
held on Thursday 23rd June at 7:30pm in the
Performing Arts Centre.
Please contact Mrs Stamatellis
on Ph. 9369 0623 to purchase tickets.

Round 4 of the CAS tennis was against reigning champs St.Aloysius. The
team took some time to adjust to their style of game to the classic clay
courts on which they were to play. At the end of the day the 1st team was
unable to match their stronger opponents whereas the 2nd team claimed
a well fought win.
In the doubles, Oscar Osborne and Dean Jones couldn’t match the St
Aloysius doubles pairing, losing 1-6 in both sets. Timur Nami and Alec
Adler tried different tactics but lost 1-6, 3-6. Oscar Osborne and Timur
Nami couldn’t secure their matches, going down to superior opponents.
Dean Jones and Alec Adler also unfortunately they went down 2-6.
Mikhail Tkatchenko and Marcus Wise played great tennis in a close
match with a 5-7, 2-6 result. Chris Poulos and Aaron Chew played
spectacular tennis in their doubles crushing their opponents 6-1, 6-0.
In the singles Mikhail, Chris and Aaron all had solid wins at 6-2, 6-0, 6-0
respectively. Marcus had a tough match and eventually lost 5-7.
In Round 5 of the CAS against Cranbrook, both teams showed a positive
display of tennis. The end result saw Waverley 1st and 2nd teams go
down to superior opponents.
The 1st doubles pairing of Timur Nami and Marcus Wise played some
extended rallying tennis but could not hold off the stronger opponents.
Dean Jones and Alec Adler took the fi rst set 6-4 however, couldn’t keep
up with the pace losing the second 3-6.
Timur showed his usual power and determination on court but was
unable to get into his normal rhythm against their top player, losing 2-6.
Dean played a hard fought match taking advantage of his opponent and
won the set 7-6. Alec was beaten 3-6, despite his tenacity on court.
Marcus, playing in his very first match for our 1sts team, delivered some
great baseline ground stokes but unfortunately lost 1-6.
The 2nds pairing consisted of Mikhail Tkatchenko and Harry James. The
two Year 12 students complement each other on the court. They lost the
fi rst set only to regain form and take the second in a punishing score of
6-1. Chris Poulos and Aaron Chew fought valiantly but succumbed with
a 3-6, 2-6 result.
Mikhail played a solid set of tennis however he was defeated 3-6. Chris
battled out his singles with the game eventually swinging his opponent’s
way, 3-6. Aaron played well but couldn’t fi nd his rhythm. Harry playing
up from the 3rds worked hard in his set but was unable to reel in the vital
games.
It is important for our teams to start to take a dominant stand at the net,
and move in with aggression. Our teams have the ability to do well and
make our opponents work hard for their points, we must start to better
utilise the training and tactics we are working on.
With the long weekend ahead, the boys can relax and start fresh with a
positive attitude for the rest of the season.
Timur Nami – Captain of First IV Tennis
Waverley 1st XV travelled to nearby Cranbrook for Round 5 of the CAS
last Saturday. We were expecting a tough game and knew we would
have to play well to win as Cranbrook has been unlucky with a number of
close losses already this season.
Waverley started confi dently and consistent pressure lead to a try to
hooker Nick Brbot , converted by Will Paterson who also kicked a penalty
goal. It was 10-0 at halftime. A number of turn-overs allowed Cranbrook
to pressurize Waverley’s line and a clever ploy around the front of the
lineout resulted in a try next to the posts. The conversion reduced the
score to 10-7 and ill-discipline gave Cranbrook the chance to equalize
scores with a penalty goal. Waverley went back into the lead with
another Will Paterson penalty goal. Will Paterson then made a great
break from his own 22 but a drop ball in front of Cranbrook’s posts gave
the Cranbrook centre a 95 metre run to score under the posts. Another
three points from a penalty saw Waverley trailing 20-13 with 12 minutes
to go. Good ball retention saw Andrew Coles score in the corner – the
conversion sailed wide and Waverley were still behind by 2 points. In a
heroic attempt to snatch the win after the bell had sounded, Waverley
moved the ball from deep in their half to Cranbrook’s 22m line. The ball
squirted out of the ruck and Cranbrook cleared to win the match 20-18.
Congratulations must go to Cranbrook for fantastic determination and
will-to-win. The Waverley boys were disappointed with the loss but look
forward to the challenge when Cranbrook visit Queens Park in the last
round next term.
The 2nd XV were ahead when the game was called off due to an injury
(thankfully no major damage occurred) and the 3rd XV had an excellent
win. 16A’s continue their impressive form and both 14 A’s and 15A’s had
good wins. I think all boys would agree that Cranbrook rugby is on the
improve and their determination in all games was evident.
Congratulations to Will Paterson, Jack Johnson, Andrew Coles, Nathan
Steyn and Haynes Wileman who were all selected in the CAS 2nd XV to
play CHS this Thursday at Cranbrook. Will Paterson was named Captain
and he, Johnson and Wileman are still Year 11’s so selection is a great
achievement.
Under 16’s who will play in the South Harbour v North Harbour CAS
trial this Thursday include Lindsey Stevens, Nicholas Koutsoukis, Fred
Fiala- Motu, Jarrod Smith, Tom O’Connor, Jack Whitaker, Ben O’Donnell,
Jack Worthington and Tayleb Hassan. Congratulations to those boys and
good luck to all our representative players.
This weekend sees no schoolboy rugby due to the long weekend and
we return on June 18 for the home clash with Barker. It would be
great to see continued support of our own Supporters Club with people
volunteering for an hour or so on the BBQ. Thank you in advance.
