VOLUME 34 No. 25 26th August 2010
Limited places exist in Years 7-12 in 2011
Last week, I outlined the first three priorities addressed at the Parent
Forum held on Tuesday August 10. I have included the remainder
of these priorities below:
Over the weekend I was part of the Executive team that met to discuss the
strategic plan for Waverley College and give my view on the direction of the
College over the next few years. It was a very worthwhile meeting and builds
on the input from all stakeholders at the College – parents, staff and students.
The news that we have been waiting for come through today – our Wakakirri
team has successfully progressed through to the Grand Final on September
15 at the Entertainment Centre. This is a great effort as there are over 100
schools that compete in our division.
Strengthening our RELATIONSHIPS to enrich learning
Do we believe that hopeful, positive relationships are essential for
successful, effective learning?
What processes are in place so that learners can develop resilience
and overcome obstacles?
Do we learn through conflict resolution and relationship building?
Nurturing an ENVIRONMENT which affirms the learner
Are our learning spaces conducive to effective learning?
Do our professional learning spaces promote collegiality and
collaboration?
Do our learning programs challenge students to be intentional with
their learning?
Generating LEADERSHIP which challenges the learning culture
Do students have the opportunities to lead the learning process?
Is there greater potential for staff leadership of learning in the
college?
Do we challenge each other to become better learners and teachers?
Celebrating a LIFE of learning enabled by the spirit of God
Are we moving from “describing and observing the world” to
“evaluating and participating in the world”?
Can learning contribute to change – within ourselves and in the
world?
Does learning at Waverley have the intention to form us as
courageous, wise, respectful, understanding, ethical, knowledgeable
and reverent human beings? (Isaiah 11:2-3 “The gifts of the Spirit)
Executive Strategic Planning Days
On Friday August 20 and Saturday August 21, the College Executive
spent significant time working through feedback from staff and
parents in order to develop a clear understanding of the issues
facing the school community. This was a very positive opportunity
for this key group to formulate a clear direction for Waverley. Again,
I appreciate the openness in which everyone has engaged with this
planning process.
Mr Ray Paxton, Headmaster
The Book Week Character Parade was a big hit with the boys last Wednesday
with many of the boys putting in a tremendous effort with their costumes.
We had clowns, wizards, witches, spies, football players, and many other
characters represented. Bindi Irwin (Ms Robinson) and Rapunzel (Mrs Roden)
also made a special appearance. Thank you to all the boys who participated
with great enthusiasm.
Last week Thomas Serhon (6 Gold) represented CIS in the State PSSA
Rugby Tournament. Tom was member of the winning team managed by our
own Mr Harris. Congratulations to both Mr Harris and Tom on an outstanding
performance.
This week sees another PSSA Carnival been held at Gosford. Patrick Pellegrini
(6 Gold) will be representing CIS at the State Touch Football competition. Mr
Stephen Ghattas will be managing the team and Mr Matthew Ryan is the
convenor for CIS. We wish both Mr Ghattas and Patrick all the best of luck
at the Carnival.
Our athletics squad competed at the Barker Invitational Carnival on Saturday.
This carnival and all the training is part of the lead up to the IPSHA Carnival
on August 31 at Homebush where the boys will compete for a place on the
CIS team. Although only a short season the boys are working hard to ensure
they perform their best at each carnival.
Our Father’s Day Mass and lunch is fast approaching. Your son should have
returned his reply slip by now. If you haven’t done so and would like to attend
please contact the office. The mass is to be held at 11.00am at Mary Immaculate
Church followed by a BBQ lunch at the Junior School on Thursday September
2. The Father’s Day Stall will be held on Wednesday September 1 with gifts
ranging from $5-$20 available for the boys to purchase.
12 Parents and their son are in attendance at this meeting. The
meeting will be addressed by Ms Kim Owens Board of Studies
Liaison Officer outlining documents the students receive from the
Board of Studies at the end of the year and how the HSC mark is
calculated. The meeting will also address College expectations
and procedures for the remainder of the year.
Academic Awards
Congratulations to the boys presented at the Academic Assembly
Ms D Grigson - DHM (Curriculum)
Launch of World Youth Day Madrid 2011
Last Thursday (19/08/10) six Year 9 students represented
Waverley College at the Sydney Archdiocesan One Year Out
Celebration “Madrid, aqui vamos!’ launch of WYD Madrid 2011
at Holy Cross College, Ryde.
Dr Dan White, Executive Director of Catholic Schools, welcomed
all of the students and Gary Pinto led the students in a catechesis/
music event. Mass was then celebrated by Cardinal George Pell.
Following lunch the students were treated to some Spanish music
and dancing before embarking on Spanish language lessons.
The day finished with the commissioning ceremony in which each
school received a WYD Madrid 2011 candle and flag.
I would like to thank our Year 9 Students: Matthew Conlon,
Andrew Ferrier, Aidan Lindsay, Aaron Smith, Erik Sarmento and
Yuki Takeda for their fine behaviour and cooperation at this event.
I would also like to thank Mr Ian Laing, Marcellin College Youth
Ministry Coordinator, for allowing us to travel to and from the event
on the Marcellin bus.
Mr P Davis - DHM (Religion)
Towards the end of last year, the Swiss soccer player, Stephan
Keller, who currently plays for Sydney FC, came in to school to
talk to the HSC German students. On Wednesday 18th August,
Mr Keller very kindly invited students from the Year 10 and Year
12 German classes to a tour of the Sydney Football Stadium,
Sydney FC’s home ground. The tour was conducted entirely in
German and there was lots of opportunity for the boys to practise
their speaking with Mr Keller and their accompanying teacher,
Mr Heners.
At the conclusion of the tour, the students presented Mr Keller
with a Waverley soccer ball, as a token of our appreciation. We
are extremely grateful to him for giving up his time and wish him
and his team every success.
Mrs C Evans - HOD Languages
Problem of the Week
If it takes six people six hours to dig six holes, how long will it take one
person to dig one hole?
Email your solution to growling@waverley.nsw.edu.au or hand in to
any member of the Mathematics staff. The first correct solution drawn
each week will win a prize. Every correct solution will go into the draw
to win a major prize at the end of term. Congratulations to last week’s
winner, Brandon Chin. The correct answer was 2 to the power of 6
minus 63 equals 1.
The HSC Drama Showcase has been a primary focus for the Department
for much of this term. Last Thursday over 180 parents and friends attended
the boys’ Showcase and showed their support. Thank you to Mr Paxton,
Ms Grigson, Mr Chen, Mr Davis, Mr Kara, Mr Kling and Ms Sutton-Pryce
for their attendance and support also. Thanks also to the boys of Year
11 Entertainment for the work on lighting, sound, staging and Front of
House. Mr Davis commented that he remembered the first Showcase in
2004 when about 12 people came to the night and was reflecting on the
journey of acceptance and inclusion into the curriculum of this new, for
Waverley, subject called Drama.
It is a busy time in the arts world at the College with Music students
performing on the Friday night and the foyer filled with all the energy and
vision of the Visual Arts Exhibition.
The boys have worked collaboratively, creatively and also independently
to create works which at once reflect the concerns of our times, the
practitioners they have studied, their own concerns and the context of
the College in our community. They have valued the relationships and the
hard work which have been at the core of this ‘real world’ deadline and
process, and hopefully have formed some approaches which will help
them on the journey to the young men they aspire to be.
Many final touches, both artistically and technically, will be added before
their final performances and examination next Friday 3rd September.
We wish them all the best on this final part of the HSC performance and
project journey in Drama
We look forward to seeing you at one of the performances this term….
Patrick O’Shea - HOD Drama
The Music Department would like to wish all Year 12 music students
the very best of luck for their HSC studies. These Year 12 students
have been excellent leaders and role models for the younger members
of all the ensembles and their contribution has been exemplary. We
wish them well and thank them for all their service.
Term Three promises to be another busy and exciting term with some
of the following events scheduled:
Author Visit: Gabrielle Lord - The week kicked off with a visit by local
author, Gabrielle Lord, who has written the newly released “Conspiracy
365” series.
The boys have been loving her fast paced, action packed books and were
delighted to hear that she would come and speak with them.
“Gabrielle Lord is an amazing author for everyone. She writes about
action, adventure, excitement and a lot of suspense.” Ryan Lewis 5W.
A big thank you to Liam Wood in Year 5 who helped to make this visit
possible.
Gabrielle was accompanied by a manager from Scholastic who spoke
to the boys about the process of writing and publishing books. It was
fantastic for the boys to get this insight from someone within the industry.
Gabrielle has since contacted our school to let us know how impressed
she was with the boys.
“It was a pleasure visiting you all. I found the boys lively and intelligent and
the questions they asked were among the very best I’ve ever encountered
at a school.”
“I think Gabrielle Lord is a wonderful author because she writes books
that are easy to read, yet they never get boring. She writes adventurous,
romantic and fast paced action books.” Joshua Tabuena
Conor Stamatelatos in 5 Gold prepared the following interview with
Gabrielle Lord...
Q. What made you think of the idea for this series? A. You catch young
male readers by making it as suspenseful as possible.
Q. Are the locations throughout the book series real? If yes would you
put Waverley in it? A.No, it’s too late but my series Jamalincan series
is based around the Eastern suburbs.
Q. Does Callum Ormond represent anyone you know? A. No, he’s just
a spunky kid.
Q. What type of music do you like? A. Classic and a little bit of AC/DC.
Q. What is your favourite movie made this year? A. Ummmm I think
it’ll be AVATAR.
Q. What inspired you to write the series? A. Scholastic Publishing
inspired me and encouraged me to write a series to hook young readers.
Q. How long does it take to write a book? A. It took me 4 years because
I had to go to Ireland (Tipperary) so I could study the scene for book 12.
Q. What’s your favourite food and drink? A. Guava juice and hot Chinese
noodles.
Q. What is your favourite book series? A. Harry Potter.
Q. What can we expect from Winter Frey? A. I think you’ll have to read
and find out but all I can say it is shocking.
Q. After reading July (book 7) does the book increase in violence? A.
I only wanted him to land on a cactus but the Editor said ‘no way, let’s
kill him ‘.
Q. How can we expect book 12 to end? A. With an amazing thrilling finish.
Character Parade:
On Wednesday afternoon we held a character parade on the playground.
The boys looked amazing and many put a great deal of thought and effort
into their costumes.
Thank you to our junior school parents for supporting this event.
“The character parade this year was terrific! There were some great
costumes and a lot of “DIARY of a Wimpy Kid’s. The best costume was
the Mad Hatter.” Alex Morris-Mikardo, 5 Green.
“The Character Parade produced a lot of different costumes ranging from
a big fluffy wolf coat to just plain jeans and t-shirts going as Greg Hefley
in Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It was a fun afternoon and the best moment
was when Hayden Rawson said he was Ron Weasley from Harry Potter.”
Ben O’Sullivan - 6 Red
Below are the Character Parade winners from each class.
Book Fair:
We had a record number of parents who offered to help run the Book
Fair. A big thank you goes out to all the parents who were able to
come in and help. The Book Fair was very successful and the boys
really seemed to enjoy selecting books from the fair.
“This year’s Book Fair was great. There was a large selection of books
and a lot of variety.” Harrison Delaney, 5 Green
Linda Roden, Librarian, Junior School
Last week’s meet was the second for the season at SOPAC (Homebush).
All CAS schools competed and it was a very competitive meet. A large
number of Waverley students competed with some very encouraging
performances. Waverley recorded some excellent results, with the Track
team (sprints and middle distance) having a much improved carnival from
last week with many of the boys recording PB’s (personal bests).
The next three weeks of training and competing are very important for the
team, with the CAS carnival fast approaching. Boys need to make sure
they are working hard at training, are turning up to all training sessions
and compete in all events on Saturday over the next three weeks. The
boys attitude and work ethic at training has been excellent and this needs
to be maintained.
This Saturday’s meet is at ES Marks.
It is very important all boys attend and compete in all events. The program
for this weeks carnival will be available at training.
IMPORTANT:
PLEASE also note the attached training schedule.
