Christchurch Earthquake
I have been shocked and disturbed by images coming from Christchurch New
Zealand during the last 24 hours. I have received the following message from
the Edmund Rice Offi ce in Melbourne in realtion to this tragic development:
This is to keep you informed about one of the
Catholic schools in Christchurch – St Thomas
of Canterbury. This school has had a long
tradition as an Edmund Rice School and still
actively expresses the Edmund Rice charism
in its school life. Our initial reports from NZ
indicate that the school itself is safe and did
not suffer any signifi cant damage. As far as
we know, the staff and students are safe. It
would be more than likely that some of the
families of students and staff would have
been affected in some way. At this point it
would be appropriate to keep the St Thomas
of Canterbury school community in your prayers. As soon as we have any
further detail we will keep you informed.
This morning at our second House Mass, we prayed for the families of those
who were killed or missing, the people of Christchurch and the New Zealand
nation. Given the natural disasters that have occurred in Australia in the past
month, there is a strong sense of solidarity with our trans-Tasman neighbours.
Through our broader EREA network, we have assured this and other New
Zealand communities of our ongoing prayerful and practical support.
Waverley College Cadet Unit Centenary Reveille Mess
It was a great privilege to be present at this highly signifi cant event. In the
all senior ranks in Years 11 and 12, together with the senior ranks’ fathers,
attended the Centenary of Foundation Reveille Mess at the Sofitel Sydney
Wentworth Hotel last Saturday night. Over 350 guests in total joined the Guest
landmark in the history of the Waverley College Cadet Unit. Other guests
included The Chairman of the College Board, Mr. P. Gillian, Br. P. Oakley
(former Headmaster) and representatives from the CAS schools, as well as
local RSL and National Servicemen’s Association of Australia members.
Waverley College Junior School Prayer for the Week
This week, as we continue our journey towards Lent, we pray especially
for the families of the Australian soldier killed in Afghanistan over the
weekend. Let us not forget all those who have lost their lives fighting for
the freedoms that we sometimes take for granted.
Pope John Paul II - Pacem in Terris: A Permanent Commitment
(Message for World Peace Day, 2003 n.10)
Almighty God, the source of all our good.
You call us from oppression and confl ict
to freedom and cooperation for the good of all.
Help people everywhere to build a world of peace
ever more solidly established on the four pillars:
truth, justice, love and freedom.
Information Night
Thank you to all the parents who managed to attend the information night
last Thursday. It was great to see our new auditorium full and I hope that
many questions regarding the day to day procedures at the Junior School
were answered.
Please remember that the P and F Cocktail Party for all parents is being
held at the Junior School this Saturday night February 26 commencing
From the Headmaster....continued from page 1...
General Cosgrove delivered The Reveille Toast honouring the spirit of the Unit
and several gifts were announced, including a re-furbished bugle donated by
Mr. T. McGrath, a set of new drums for the Drum Corps donated by Mr. M.
Higgins and a new set of fl ags, donated by the Old Boys Union. To conclude
proceedings the Unit Commanding Officer, Lt. Col (AAC) P. Frost was
assisted by the RSM as the Roll Call of each year present was announced.
I received an email from a 1977 Old Boy the following day which expressed
what I believe would be a very common response to the event:
By now I’m sure you’ve received numerous emails congratulating you on the
great night last Saturday. It truly was a wonderful event. Well organized, well
executed, a great atmosphere. I was terribly proud to be associated with the
College last Saturday – everyone and everything was at its best.
I wish to congratulate the WCCU on a magnifi cent milestone and thank the
organizing committee, led by Lt Col Peter Frost and Major Anthony Evans, for
their tireless leadership.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The Premier’s Reading Challenge aims to encourage in students a love
of reading and to enable students to experience quality literature. It is
not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more
and to read more widely. The Challenge runs from 1 February to 1
September 2011.
All students who enter and complete the Challenge will receive a
Premier’s Reading Challenge certifi cate for that year and their name will
be published on an Honour Roll.
Students who have their PRC username and password from previous
years can log on from 1 March. They do not need to be reactivated.
On their fi rst logon for 2011, students record their previous school, if
applicable. Students new to the Challenge need to contact the Librarian
to be registered. The challenge is open to students from Years 5 to 9.
Parents please encourage your sons to become a part of the Premier’s
???????????????? Problem of the Week ?????????????????
Anne and Bob each want to buy a book. Anne is five cents short, and
Bob needs another 50 cents to be able to afford it. They decide to
combine their money, but they still don’t have enough money. How much
does the book cost? Hint: Assume that 5c is the smallest denomination
of money that Bob can have.
Email your solution to growling@waverley.nsw.edu.au or hand in to any
member of the Mathematics staff. The fi rst correct solution drawn each
week will win a prize. Every correct solution will go into the draw to win
a major prize at the end of term. Congratulations to last week’s winner,
Alex Michaux. The correct answer was 16 games.
Kolkata calling
Last week I recalled how Dane Inman and I visited the school at the city
garbage tip. After this we were brought to a shanty town erected close
to Howrah train station. Our fi rst stop was the school. It was constructed
of hessian mats strung together. The noise from the main road was very
distracting. After the children sang for us we took a tour of the housing
area. The homes were very basic wooden structures with tarpaulin roofs.
What struck us was the number of unsupervised young children sitting in
these homes. It was explained to us that the mothers go begging in the
city or at the station and they leave some of the children at home. This
disturbed me greatly even though I appreciated that they had little choice.
I am going to propose that Waverley College, through our Easter Appeal,
help build schools at Howrah Tip and Howrah Station.
Geraldine Cullen, Social Justice Coordinator
Last weekend saw a challenging round of sport for many teams against a
strong Barker opposition. There were many good individual performances
and our Water Polo teams in particular had some very impressive results.
However, a few teams underperformed and some of this was due to either
a lack of application at training the week before or due to some noticeable
absences from a few teams.
It is imperative, especially when we are at away games, that all players
attend unless there is a genuine and suitable reason. The sports policy
clearly indicates that absence on a Saturday should be followed up with a
medical certifi cate due to illness. Simply not showing up is unacceptable
and is not only unfair on other team members but is embarrassing for the
school and its CAS commitments. Many teams are playing away at Knox this
weekend and appropriate transport arrangements need to be made. For our
Year 12 students, this is the penultimate round of summer sport for Waverley
College. I am sure that everybody will be in attendance and give their best.
The following week we are home to Aloysius and all players, parents and
supporters are invited to come and watch the last round of summer sport and
see the 1st V basketball in the gym and the 1st XI cricket and Queens Park.
This coming Saturday night is also the annual Christian Brothers Swim
carnival at north Sydney Pool. I wish the swimmers who have been selected
to swim the best of luck. I also want to thank all of the swimmers on their fi ne
efforts last Friday night and give a special thanks to the parents who attended
and also assisted in timekeeping. We are rapidly approaching the CAS swim
carnival on March 10 to which all of Years 8, 10 & 12 attend. We also have
our invitational at Des Renford on Friday March 4.
I wish all of our teams the best of luck this coming weekend.
The 9A team fell to some good early morning swing bowling and good fielding
to be rolled for 47. Barker passed the total for the loss of only 1 wicket.
The 9C were rolled for 77 with Edward Riley scoring 66 of these. Barker
passed the total without losing a wicket and with 4 overs remaining.
The 8A team bowled Barker out for 98 with Jackson Elridge 3 for 4 and Harry
Vass 2 for 2. In reply Waverley looked like getting the runs only to fall 8 runs
short due to some tight Barker bowling.
The 7A team restricted Barker to 6 for 122. In reply Waverley fi nished at 7 for
113 with Nathan Shepherd 32 and James Mahoney-Brack 48.
Waverley 7B’s made 133 off 29 overs. Barker passed the total in the 27th over
for the loss of 5 wickets.
The 7C’s restricted Barker to 127 however couldn’t quite make the total falling
20 runs short.
Mr. J. Boyd MIC
Round Eight of the CAS Tennis was played against a formidable opponent in
Barker College, who seem to always have an abundance of talented players to
choose from.
The Waverley team consisting of Rhys Beccaris and Oscar Osborne were
humbled on court, by a much more dominant and structured Barker pairing,
boasting the top seeded player in the CAS competition.
The fi rst match got under way and was over very quickly, seeing our team
going down to love in both sets. This was followed by another humbling
performance in the singles, with Rhys fi ghting hard to lead 2-1, only to be
overpowered and lose 2-6. Oscar had an off day with the racquet and was
beaten convincingly by his opponent to love.
The other doubles pairing of Timur Nami and David Buckland played a terrifi c
and dominant fi rst set winning 6-2 however lacked concentration and were
outplayed in the second losing 2-6
The other singles started with a dominant display of tennis skill and tactical
play to David winning with ease 6-3. Timur played a much closer match
than the score indicates, stepping up into the #3 position, he outplayed his
opponent in many aspects, however could not convert the close points, being
beaten 3-6.
In the seconds Victor Moffroid and Kurt Von Hofe fought hard in another
extended doubles match with the score 6-4 7-6 getting the team off to an even
start, Mikhail Tkatchenko and Alec Adler were simply outplayed losing 1-6 0-6.
Victor again showed a dominant display in his singles match winning 6-2, and
pushing for selection in the fi rst’s team. Kurt again was solid, however simple
unforced errors proved costly losing 4-6 in a tight match. Alec and Mikhail lost
in a similar fashion with many unforced errors, and lots of shots going into the
net.
Similar results across the whole of Tennis resulted in Barker showing
dominance in Tennis. They are a formidable opponent in every age, and show
why they are the benchmark in the CAS competition.
We head to Knox for round 9, being a crucial weekend for the First team, with
a solid win likely to put us in a good position to steal away the second placing
on the CAS ladder. Good luck to all players next week.
Mr K. Brown, MIC Tennis
Round 8 v Barker
The 1st XI lost the toss and batted on what was a well grassed Barker
wicket. Luke Phillips and Jordan Kennedy started well and had 25 on the
board before Luke Phillips feathered on through to the keeper. Thomas
Wakim received a cracker fi rst delivery to have his off stump removed. Daniel
Kitto and Jordan Kennedy moved the total to 64 before Jordan Kennedy
was dismissed. This saw Andrew Coles come to the crease and the score
progress to 96 for 3. Both these batsmen fell with the score on this total and
the next 5 batsman could only see the score climb to 107 before Waverley
was dismissed. Daniel Kitto 37 and Luke Phillips 21.
Barker lost a wicket in the fi rst over. In the next six overs Waverley let
opportunity slip through their fi ngers. Five catches went down behind the
wicket in this time thanks to some hostile bowling from William Paterson,
Jack Rains and Harry James. Barker could quite easily have been 5 for
10. This was not the case and Barker edged to the total for the loss of only
2 wickets with 14 overs to spare. Hopefully the fi nal two games will see
improved results.
The 2nd XI began in fi ne form having Barker at 7 for 30 after 14 overs with
skipper Jackson Coutts 4 for 16 and Dean Jones 3 for 20. Barker recovered
to post 9 for 93. Waverley must have thought they had victory in the bag and
a lack of commitment saw the team bowled out for 64.
The 4th XI had a fi ghting win. Barker was all out for 66 with Louis Mieville
taking 6 wickets for just 6 runs. Waverley passed the total for the loss of 8
wickets with Roy Talpadi making 19.
The 10A side started well but lack of concentration saw them all out for 106.
Barker smashed the runs in only 15 overs for the loss of just 1 wicket.
The 10B side bowled Barker out for 57 with Mark Polyblank 3 for 11 and Liam
McDonagh 2 for 10. They passed the total for the loss of just 5 wickets.
A reminder to all water polo players that the presentation will be
held at the college pool on March 5, after the completion of the days
games. All boys are expected to attend the presentation to receive
their awards. There will be games, raffles and prizes to be won.
Last Saturday, the Opens, Year 8 and Year 7 teams travelled to the Brickpit
to play games against Barker College. In the 1sts, the inability to fi nish off
the team’s offence cost them dearly. The 1sts constructed many scoring
opportunities, but were unable to keep the scoreboard ticking over with the ball
continuing to fall the wrong way. This was not the case for the Barker 1sts,
who appeared to make every shot. Despite this, Patrick Byrne controlled the
tempo, organised the team and contributed with 12 points. Adam Danckert
top scored with 13 points, but was unable to convert all of his scoring
opportunities. John Sommerville and Patrick Duffy defended strongly, while
Oscar Heidrich assisted off the bench with 8 points. James Sekhas provided 7
points and Haydn Johannson 6. The 1sts lost 54 – 94.
The 2nds were up against a much taller and faster team. Despite this, their
offence created scoring opportunities, which helped to please the scoreboard.
Andrew Gaitero provided 10 points, Christian Terry 6, Tom Chamberlain 5,
while Billy Wright, Ryan Dorian, Dylan Sweeney and Jackson Farley scored
4 points each. The 2nds lost 37 – 63. This team has been unlucky; as they
have had many opportunities over the last few weeks to prove their ability.
Unfortunately each time they have fallen short.
This weekend is the second last game for the season and we are hosting Knox
Grammar School. Best of luck to all teams this weekend. Go the Waves!
