World Environment Day
World Environment Day 2010 was celebrated on
Saturday June 5. I invite you to visit the website which
provides comprehensive information, images and
initiatives.
http://www.unep.org/wed/2010/english/
I am very proud of the steps taken by the Waverley
community to move this issue forward. Of particular
note is the formation of our Junior School Environment
Group (under the leadership of Mr Kendall Robinson).
This group has been extremely pro-active in keeping
envirnmental issues on the agenda at Waverley. They
have set up a site on ewave, produced a term program of
environmental actions, consulted with external agencies
and celebrated all this and more on World Environment
Day! (see photo below of Junior School and Pre-School
students in our new Covered Outdoor Learning Area)
The major religions of the world have an ongoing
commitment to the natural world. The sacred writings
of Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam
and others have specific teachings on the care of the
environment. In fact, there is plenty of agreement on
how we should act.
The United Nations Environment Program has issued a
publication titled: Earth and Faith: A Book of Reflection for
Action. It offers a list of agreed environmental statements
from the major world religions. These include:
* The natural world has value in itself and does not exist solely to serve human needs.
* Non-human living beings are morally significant in the eyes of God and in the universe; they have
their own relationship to God and the universe.
* Human life depends on the natural world and this should be acknowledged, appreciated and
celebrated.
* The well-being of human beings and non-human beings are inseparably connected. Therefore,
justice and compassion should apply to both.
* There are legitimate and non-legitimate uses of nature
* Greed and destructiveness should be condemned. Restraint and protection should be praised.
* Human beings are obliged to be aware and responsible in living in harmony with the natural world
and should follow the specific practices taught by their religious traditions.
It is a great sign of hope that such agreement exists. It remains our
challenge to apply these truths to our own situations.
Congratulations
I commend our Cadets (winners of
CAS Drill Event!), Theatre Sports
Teams (now Grand Finalists!), Junior
School Cantores (achieved a place
in McDonald’s Performing Arts
Challenge!), Musicians (great Music
Camp!) for their commitment and
successes in recent weeks.
Mr Ray Paxton
Last Friday the Junior School and the children from the Pre-school
celebrated World Environment Day. Under the guidance of Mr Robinson
the boys at the Junior School are trying very hard to make a positive
impact on the environment. The recycling drive is in full swing and the
boys are working hard at ensuring their carbon footprint is reduced.
Very exciting news. Hugh France from 5 Gold has made it into
the final 20 artworks (out of some 520) for the Waverley Council
Truck Art Competition and is invited to the announcement of the
7 winners. Well done Hugh and all the best in the final selection.
We wish James Mahony-Brack all the best as he represents CIS at
the PSSA Football Championships in Nowra this week. Not only is
James competing for CIS, the tournament acts as a selection trial
for the State team which is picked at the end of the tournament.
To assist the Senior School Cricket Tour a BBQ is being held on
Friday June 18. Boys will be able to buy a sausage on a roll and
a drink for $4. An order form will be sent home during the week.
Australian Government assistance for National Capital Excursion
Students from the Junior School recently undertook an
educational tour of the national capital. While on this tour they
participated in a variety of educational programmes focused
on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all
young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as
part of their civics and citizenship education. To assist you in
meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is
contributing funding under the Parliament and Civics and Education
Rebate (PACER) programme toward the travel expenses incurred.
Activities undertaken as part of the educational tour included
the tour of Parliament House, visit to the War Memorial and a
session at the Electoral Education Centre. We would like to thank
the Australian Government for their support of this program.
We hope that the excursion was a rewarding experience for all students.
The following boys have received awards for the last cycle – well done gentlemen
Study Skills Tip – Computer Skills (provided by Pure Salter
Enhanced Learning Educational Services)
Now that computers play such a large role in our lives, it is worth thinking
now and then about your computer skills. This month, one of the new
units on online Studies Skills Handbook looks at Basic Computer Skills
– you’ll find it in the For Students tab. Some of the areas covered are
firstly physical care for your computer, there are all sorts of hazards
from pets to dust that can cause problems for your computer. The unit
also suggests ways to set up your files and folders for school, nothing
worse than trying to find a file when they are all named science1,
science2 etc. And don’t forget the importance of regular back-ups and
system checks to ensure your files are protected and your computer
runs smoothly. When did you last do a back-up of your files and where
do you keep this back-up? Lastly, if you are a notebook or laptop user,
you’ll definitely want to check out the section on maximizing battery life.
Another wet weekend, however, a few fixtures did go ahead. Both
the 1st XI Football and 1st XV Rugby sides played over at Trinity
as well as all A’s Football sides, Volleyball, and some Tennis. The
15C Rugby side also ventured out to ‘Joeys’ to play a difficult fixture.
Well done to Mr McBride and his side for representing the College
well under difficult circumstances, and thank you to the players and
parents who attended. Though there is no sport for Waverley this
Saturday, we have many boys in both Football and Rugby trialing
for representative teams and we wish all people involved the best of
luck and know that you are putting your best on the paddock every
time.
I must also make mention of the 9A and 9B Tennis sides that played
to a very high standard against a much more fancied opposition.
It was disappointing to hear though that there were a couple of
noticeable absences on Saturday for a couple of teams. Please
always make sure you check the wet weather line and are clear on
any cancellations.
I also need to reinforce the point that all supporters need to remain
off the field of play at all times, regardless of what is happening on
the pitch. Running onto the field of play, despite good intentions,
can easily flare up a situation and should never happen. It is also
important that we give all officials the respect that they deserve in
doing an often thankless and difficult job. Without these officials
there would be no games!
Well done to the 1st XI who played a great brand of Football on
Saturday and were desperately unlucky not to win. The 1st XV also
had a hard fought victory but reflected a lack of training due to the
weather. The 1st XV are playing a make up fixture against Barker
next Tuesday at 2.45pm at Queens Park. If you are available to
come down and support, please come in your Waverley colours!
Training sessions are on as normal this week, weather permitting,
and we need to prepare well due to the next fixture against Knox
on June 19. Can I also remind students and parents, that the house
Athletics Carnival is rapidly approaching on June 23 at ES Marks.
Mr S O’Donnell
Sports Master
Congratulations to Luke Persoglia Year 8 who was awarded an Academic
Medallion and Dean Jones Year 10 who was awarded an Academic Plaque.
The 6th Round of the CAS season saw Waverley once again come
up against long time rival Trinity. This has been the first fixture that
has been played out in a few weeks due to weather.
The first pairing of Ryan Azzopardi and Oscar Osborne started
strongly in their doubles but were outplayed going down 7-5 6-0.
Ryan Azzopardi had a close fought singles, however letting his
opponent get the better of him with a 6-4 loss. Oscar started off well
but was eventually taken down 6-4 in a close encounter.
The second pairing of Anthony O’Rourke and Timur Nami saw them
have a good start taking the first set but lacked the intensity needed
for the second set with the score ending up at 6-4 4-6. Anthony
played a very smart game of singles pulling off some terrific shots,
however going down 6-3 in a brave effort. Timur had a slow start in
his singles and was unable to regain any confidence unfortunately
going down 6-0.
In the seconds the first pairing of Tom Wakim and Chris Polous saw
them have a tough time with their opponents in a 6-3 6-1 loss. With
a solid consistent effort in his singles, Tom just came up short going
down 6-3. Chris played a good singles but this time lacked the
consistency he was looking for, going down 6-1.
The second pair saw Mikhail Tkatchenko come back from a long
injury playing doubles with Harry James. They lost the match 6-3
6-1 but played well in the conditions. Mikhail’s first game of the
season saw a bit of rust in his game going down 6-1. Harry had the
same problem coming back from sickness and going down 6-1.
Holiday Camps - Years 4 ~ 8 (ages 9 - 14)
Waverley College is offering a holiday camp to boys
and girls (Years 4 to 8) for the week of Monday 28th
June to Friday 3rd July.
For further details see College website or ring John
Kara, Commercial Manager, on 9369 0764
Many of our students would not have had the opportunity to attend
training over the last two weeks due to wet fields and incessant rain.
Considering the physical nature of the game, it is important that the
players maintain some sort of exercise routine, despite the weather
conditions. It is a known fact that a considerable degree of fitness is
lost over a two week period if little exercise and training is sustained.
Rugby players should try to include at least thirty minutes of exercise
per day in order to prevent loss of fitness.
Congratulations to the First Fifteen for a closely contested win on
Saturday and to the six CAS representatives selected from Waverley
After a mid-week Cup match that Waverley won on penalties, the
First XI looked to take this confidence to Trinity.
The travelling Waverley team started the first half well, with some
strong defending from Centre Back Michael Millett keeping the
Trinity attack’s chances to a minimum. Goalkeeper Lloyd Wood
also put in another good performance for the season, regularly
coming off of his line to clear the loose through balls and prevent
the Trinity strikers the chance to shoot on goal. The home side
had the first chance of the game, with Trinity Striker and Captain
Christopher Shelston managing to find some space in behind the
Waverley back four, yet sending his shot wide of the goal post.
Striker Jordan Kennedy played through Midfielder Fletcher Lowe
for Waverley’s first chance of the game, after a great display of
control from both players; however, Lowe’s ensuing shot was
watched wide by the Trinity goalkeeper. Not too long before the
end of the half saw the first goal of the match, and it was to be
the home side to score first. Following a corner that ricocheted of
defenders and attackers alike, the ball dropped kindly in the box
for a Trinity player to run onto and strike into the far corner of the
goal for the 1-0 lead. The score line remained 1-0 as the whistle
was blown for half-time.
The Trinity side restarted the second half of this hotly contested
match, and watched as the first chance of the half fell to
Waverley Midfielder Anthony Nappa, who fired a great shot that
unfortunately flew agonisingly wide of the top corner. Yet soon
after this, the Trinity side doubled their advantage through Captain
Shelston, who, after played through one-on-one with the keeper,
fired the home side into a 2-0 lead. Yet the advantage was soon
pulled back to just one following a goal for Waverley. An unmarked
Jordan Kennedy netted a vital header at the back post, following
a great out swinging free-kick from Midfielder Fletcher Lowe.
As the game continued, the midfield battle intensified with the
Waverley side searching for that much needed equaliser, and the
Trinity side looking to hold out their one goal advantage, which
they managed to do, with the full-time score remaining at 2-1 in
Trinity’s favour.
The Waverley side will look to immediately bounce back from this
defeat as they play at home to Knox in round 7 of the CAS season
at Queens Park this upcoming Saturday.
Waverley Cadets win the CAS Drill Competition for 2010
Last Wednesday members of the cadet unit in the VC Guard
travelled to Steele Army Barracks to compete in the annual CAS Drill
Competition. This is the premier drill competition in Sydney amongst
schools that have cadet units with each school fielding a team of 21
cadets under the command of each Unit’s RSM.
The competition consists of a formal uniform inspection by Army
Warrant Officers followed by a drill sequence that involves static drill
in the formation, then marching in both slow and quick time. This is
an extremely demanding format because the RSM must memorize
a sequence of over 20 orders and the team must carry out all these
drill movements without the assistance of drums or music. Parts of
the drill involve forms at the halt and on the march in both slow and
quick time, turns on the march and breaking from slow march to
quick march and vice versa.
Training for the event was carried out during lunch hours and before
school over a period of three months under the expert guidance of
the Unit 2IC, Major (AAC) Anthony Evans, assisted by the Unit RSM,
W01 Nathan Stone.
As usual this year the standard was very high with only a few points
separating the competing schools. Ultimately Waverley prevailed
to win the competition because the team kept strictly to prescribed
drill requirements and executed all the orders with confidence and
precision. The achievement was all the more impressive because
the bulk of the team was made up of Year 9 cadets.
The trophy was presented by the Cadet Brigade Commander,
Lieutenant Colonel (AAC) David Major, who remarked that the
standard of the drill was so high that it surpassed some drill
performed by regular Army and Reserve members at the Barracks.
This achievement by the Waverley College Cadet Unit means that
the Unit is the current holder of both the CAS Drill and CAS Military
Skills trophies.
