From the Headmaster<br />

On Thursday evening this week, I was invited<br />

by the Mayor of <strong>Waverley</strong>, Cr Paul Wakefield (a<br />

<strong>Waverley</strong> <strong>College</strong> Pre-School parent), to deliver<br />

the address at the <strong>Waverley</strong> Council Citizenship<br />

Ceremony. On this night, over fifty people from<br />

a range of backgrounds and countries read the<br />

Pledge of Allegiance to Australia and were officially<br />

welcomed by the Australian Government. It was<br />

a great privilege to be present, to witness the<br />

emotions felt by each person and to experience<br />

the celebratory atmosphere created by friends and<br />

family in attendance.<br />

In my address, I spoke about the contribution of<br />

<strong>Waverley</strong> <strong>College</strong> to the region:<br />

“As an independent Catholic school in the Eastern<br />

Suburbs of Sydney, <strong>Waverley</strong> <strong>College</strong> shares the<br />

provision of education with other independent<br />

schools, CEO Schools and government schools.<br />

In this context, <strong>Waverley</strong> is a comprehensive,<br />

inclusive, academically non-selective school which<br />

offers a wide range of courses and co-curricular<br />

opportunities to students from all backgrounds in<br />

our Pre-School, Junior School and Senior School.”<br />

I then spoke about the goals of <strong>Waverley</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

as described in our Strategic Plan. I mentioned<br />

<strong>Waverley</strong> boys at<br />

the cutting edge of<br />

learning<br />

Last week, all Year 10<br />

students received brand new<br />

Macbook Air computers as<br />

part of ‘<strong>Waverley</strong> iLearn’, the<br />

<strong>College</strong>’s innovative blended<br />

learning program.<br />

Excited students and families<br />

received the laptops at a<br />

special evening where they<br />

were briefed on use and<br />

care of the laptops, security<br />

measures at school and<br />

on public transport, cyber<br />

safety and physical health<br />

when using and carrying the<br />

equipment.<br />

that schools are a reflection of the hopes and<br />

dreams of the broader community. As such, the<br />

goals <strong>Waverley</strong> <strong>College</strong> are essentially the goals<br />

and standards – in fact, non-negotiables - for<br />

citizenship. I referred to our commitment as a<br />

school to Beliefs, Innovation, Relationships,<br />

Resources, Environment, Leadership and Life<br />

(BIRRELL). This was expanded to an examination<br />

of how we form each other:<br />

• As people of faith<br />

• As innovative, inspired learners<br />

• As hopeful, proactive resilient people<br />

• As a community prepared to share our<br />

resources with the poor<br />

• As carers of our environment<br />

• As confident, just, compassionate leaders<br />

• As ethical and reverent human beings.<br />

These are my expectations of myself, of all students<br />

and staff, and of familes and friends of <strong>Waverley</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong>. These expectations and standards are the<br />

foundations of good citizenship.<br />

Changes for End of Term 2<br />

There will be some staff changes for the end of<br />

the term with a number of teachers on leave. Miss<br />

Curriculum News: Reviewing and revising<br />

Exams and Revision<br />

It is a busy time of year at <strong>Waverley</strong> at present with<br />

much of the School doing tests and revision for end of<br />

semester tasks.<br />

Yesterday Mr Paxton and myself taught our three<br />

classes of Year 8 Critical Thinking. We had a fantastic<br />

lesson planned (Of course it was fantastic!) around<br />

watching a clip of the Berlin Wall and getting them<br />

to think about and ask questions using Bloom’s<br />

Taxonomy (see illustration at right).<br />

The aim was to move them from asking simple<br />

‘Remembering’ and ‘Understanding’ questions to<br />

higher levels of questioning involving the skills of<br />

analysis and evaluation. It was well planned, taught<br />

and delivered for most of the day. The Period 6 class,<br />

however, came in after just completing a test and for<br />

the first 5-10 minutes the chatter was about, “What did<br />

you write for that question?”, “Did you think the test<br />

was hard?”, “How do you think you went?”. Both of<br />

us laughed because we were observing the flow-on<br />

effects of the assessment period and instead of diving<br />

into the lesson we let them talk about the test that<br />

seemed more important to them than the lesson on<br />

the Berlin Wall.<br />

We eventually got to the lesson, but on reflection<br />

realized how keen this class was to discuss the test.<br />

These boys were keen. In a few weeks these tests<br />

will be marked and passed back to the boys to find out<br />

how they went and then begin the next cycle of exams<br />

and revision next term.<br />

Assessment and Exam Week is a new process at<br />

<strong>Waverley</strong> this year for Years 7-10 and as part of<br />

this process teachers and Heads of Department will<br />

discuss how things went and what could be improved<br />

for the end of the year. One of the things I want<br />

to discover is what makes this class so eager for<br />

learning and results so that we can spread this to<br />

other classes in Year 8 and the school.<br />

I would be happy to hear from any parents either by<br />

email or phone on their thoughts around exams and<br />

revision at <strong>Waverley</strong>.<br />

Last week I spoke to a Year 7 parent who wanted to<br />

know what their son needed to study for the exams.<br />

Each department summarises this information and it<br />

is placed on EWave, the internal school portal that all<br />

boys and parents have access too. Any parent can<br />

access this information using their son’s login details.<br />

Year 12 Reports and Academic<br />

Progress<br />

As we go to press the Year 12 Reports are being<br />

printed, signed and mailed out to parents. This is an<br />

important time for Year 12 boys, teachers and parents.<br />

We are into the final few weeks of Term 2 and this<br />

report data will be an important measurement tool of<br />

progress for Year 12 since the last report in early Term<br />

One. A few events are happening with Year 12 this<br />

term to assist them and prepare them for the HSC and<br />

beyond.<br />

1. Careers Interviews<br />

Mrs Kath Knowles – Senior Studies and Careers<br />

Coordinator is interviewing each Year 12 student this<br />

term to help them plan for a future career pathway.<br />

The aim is for each boy to sit with Mrs Knowles and<br />

think about University, TAFE or other options and<br />

to plan accordingly. This is a time-intensive but<br />

important task that provides the best possible to guide<br />

our students as time marches closer towards HSC<br />

Trials, then HSC exam and life beyond.<br />

2. Year 12 Academic Mentoring Interviews<br />

Each boy in Year 12 has an academic mentor, who is<br />

a member of the <strong>College</strong> Executive, Senior Studies<br />

Team, Year Master or Head of Department. This<br />

term they will again find time in Week 8 or 9 to meet<br />

with Year 12, discuss their latest report and chart a<br />

pathway to the HSC Trials. Each Year 12 boy will be<br />

asked the same questions they were asked in<br />

Term 1:<br />

• What subjects were you pleased with in your<br />

last report. Why?<br />

• What subjects were you disappointed with?<br />

• What strategies can you put into play to improve<br />

your subjects?<br />

• What goals would you like to set yourself for the<br />

next term?<br />

• Tell me about your study habits. How is your<br />

time management going?<br />

Study Skills Tip for June: Reviewing<br />

your work on a daily basis<br />

Did you know that if you don’t look at what you<br />

are learning for a second time within 24 hours you<br />

forget 80% of the detail? This is why your teachers<br />

encourage you to review what you learn each day<br />

when you get home from school.<br />

One of the best habits you can develop is the<br />

following: each afternoon, even before you start your<br />

homework, spend 10-15 minutes reviewing what you<br />

learnt at school that day.<br />

There are lots of different ways you can do this<br />

review, here are some ideas (and you can do<br />

something different every day):<br />

1. Highlight the key points in each lesson.<br />

2. Write down the top 3 things you learnt in each<br />

lesson (you could do this in a separate book or<br />

at the bottom of the day’s classwork).<br />

3. Make a mind map about what you have been<br />

learning in class.<br />

4. Try and explain what you did in each lesson that<br />

day to a family member (or even to the cat).<br />

5. Go on a Google adventure, do some quick<br />

research on one interesting thing from each<br />

lesson.<br />

6. Write up on a white board one main idea from<br />

each lesson (a whiteboard in your room is a<br />

great tool for secondary students).<br />

7. Write down for each subject a question you<br />

could ask about what you learnt that day.<br />

There will be a fabulous payoff to doing this, more of<br />

what you learn at school will stick in your head, you<br />

will have less to learn at test time, and it will make<br />

your assignments and projects easier when you can<br />

recall what you have been learning.<br />

Social Justice: Red Shield Appeal supported<br />

I spoke to a parent of a year 11 student last week<br />

and she was surprised to hear that our students<br />

are involved in at least six outreach experiences<br />

every week.<br />

Over the past couple of weeks we have had year<br />

7-10 students train to be buddies to disadvantaged<br />

kids in a reading program. We had twenty students<br />

take part in the Salvos Red Shield Appeal in<br />

locations all over Sydney.<br />

Every week, students attend the Matt Talbot Kiosk,<br />

bowl with the disabled, help out at Waterford<br />

Preschool and play Bingo with the elderly at<br />

Charingfield.<br />

Over 100 boys have offered to donate blood this<br />

year which is a new record.<br />

This week Night Patrol will go out on Friday night<br />

and year 11 students will attend a Social Justice<br />

Day at Christian Brother’s School Lewisham. Next<br />

week, 15 boys will spend the evening at a Street<br />

Retreat in Kings Cross. They will get the chance<br />

to hear first hand what it is like to be homeless<br />

on the streets of Sydney. Our students and staff<br />

should feel very proud of the huge contribtion they<br />

are making to their community.<br />

Year 7 and 10 Vaccinations Next Week<br />

<strong>College</strong> Music Festival<br />

21 June: Book early to<br />

avoid disappointment<br />

Next week <strong>Waverley</strong> <strong>College</strong> students in Years 7 and<br />

10 will be provided with free vaccinations in the PAC<br />

on the afternoon of Thursday 7 June.<br />

NSW Health offers the vaccines recommended by<br />

the National Health and Medical Research Council<br />

for adolescents in this school-based vaccination<br />

program.<br />

Year 7 students are provided the following<br />

vaccinations:<br />

• hepatitis B vaccine in a 2 dose schedule, except<br />

where the individual had received a course of<br />

hepatitis B vaccine in childhood<br />

• varicella (chickenpox) vaccine in a single dose<br />

schedule, except where the individual has<br />

acquired immunity through previous varicella<br />

infection<br />

• diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (whooping cough)<br />

vaccine (dTpa) in a single dose schedule.<br />

Year 10 students are provided the following<br />

vaccination:<br />

• diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (whooping cough)<br />

vaccine (dTpa) in a single dose schedule.<br />

Free vaccination is only available to students who<br />

have a signed parental/ guardian consent form and<br />

who commence the vaccine course while they are<br />

in Year 7 or Year 10. Notes have already been<br />

distributed to students for these vaccinations; please<br />

contact the <strong>College</strong> as soon as possible if you have<br />

not completed the appropriate forms.<br />

Students who miss vaccine doses due to absence<br />

on the day of the clinic will be offered catch-up<br />

vaccination at subsequent clinics wherever possible.<br />

Sports Master’s Report<br />

Last weekend saw a big round of sport against<br />

some well-drilled Barker sides. Our 1st XI<br />

Football were gallant and very unlucky in their<br />

2-2 draw. Our 1st XV went down to a big Barker<br />

side that were simply more hungry for the victory<br />

on the day, however, we did have some other<br />

great results including winning the 16A’s; 15A’s;<br />

14A’s and 13A’s rugby. The 15A’s have gone<br />

from strength to strength but come up against a<br />

determined St Aloysius side this week and will<br />

need to keep improving. All teams need to be on<br />

their game this coming week and will need to train<br />

and play well to secure victory.<br />

A reminder that CAS Codes of Conduct apply to<br />

both participants and spectators at our games.<br />

Any student involved in on-field behaviour that<br />

does not fulfill CAS and <strong>College</strong> expectations will<br />

face either a sports tribunal or will be dealt with<br />

appropriately.<br />

I would like to emphasise that parents and<br />

spectators should not approach opposition or<br />

<strong>Waverley</strong> <strong>College</strong> coaches directly on a Saturday.<br />

If you have a complaint or a concern then we<br />

certainly encourage all to voice these but in the<br />

correct manner and through the school rather than<br />

at a venue.<br />

Alcohol is banned at all school grounds and those<br />

caught drinking alcohol will be removed from the<br />

venue.<br />

Let’s hope that this weekends’ sport is conducted<br />

in a manner that brings credit to the school.<br />

Cross Country: Sydney Park - the Year’s<br />

toughest course<br />

Cranbook and St. Aloysius hosted this Meet on<br />

a freezing morning at Sydney Park; arguably the<br />

toughest course for the year.<br />

177 runners contested the U/14 race with Connor<br />

McGrath best performed for <strong>Waverley</strong> in 4th place<br />

overall (1st CAS U/13), followed by Nick Blakey in<br />

25th place (1st CAS U/12), hotly pursued by Luca<br />

Reiners in 26th place (6th CAS U/13), with Angus<br />

Baird coming in 48th place (3rd CAS U/12), and<br />

Latham James (15th CAS U/14). The team did<br />

great; coming 5th overall (2nd CAS team behind<br />

Barker). Well done to all the boys.<br />

The U/16 race had 163 runners and Oscar<br />

Osbourne ran a fine race to finish 7th overall (2nd<br />

CAS U/16), followed by Jake Bartholomaeus in<br />

13th place (3rd CAS U/15); another great effort.<br />

These boys were followed by Jake Foster, Josh<br />

Causer, Leandro Moore and Michael Chan.<br />

Congratulations to all the boys who ran to their best<br />

ability on a hard course.<br />

Unfortunately captain Jethro James was unable to<br />

run in the Open race, but was there to support the<br />

team. Next week’s Meet is at St. Ignatius <strong>College</strong>,<br />

Lane Cove. It is the CAS selection race for the CIS<br />

Championships.<br />

The Rugby Report: Good results against Barker<br />

CAS round 4<br />

After a few Saturdays of lovely Autumn weather,<br />

last week saw the first of the big westerly winds<br />

that can make Queens Park a difficult place<br />

to play rugby. Barker <strong>College</strong> were the visitors<br />

– undefeated in 1sts and traditionally strong<br />

throughout all age groups. A tough day of rugby<br />

beckoned.<br />

16Bs showed glimpses of good play but the<br />

reluctance to tackle was again in evidence at<br />

crucial stages and a good Barker side took the<br />

honours. The <strong>Waverley</strong> boys proved their ability<br />

when they beat Knox away from home three weeks<br />

ago and need to believe that they have the ability<br />

to play like that again.<br />

The As were up for the challenge and worked<br />

hard against the breeze in the first half to be 5-all<br />

at the break. The boys had trouble playing the<br />

ball in Barker’s end in the second half but kept<br />

persisting and were rewarded at the death with<br />

a controversial try to front-rower Ben Gan, to<br />

steal the win. The C’s had their issues but battled<br />

gamely and the D’s started well but faded late in<br />

the game.<br />

The 13s showed their depth with solid<br />

performances in each grade. The A’s produced<br />

excellent passages but lapses in concentration and<br />

ill-discipline at the breakdown saw Barker come<br />

storming back to get level with 5 minutes to play.<br />

A final try to <strong>Waverley</strong> gained the win – this team<br />

has plenty of potential but needs to keep focused<br />

for the whole game. The B’s , D’s and E’s won hard<br />

fought matches but the C’s and F’s were unlucky<br />

to lose.<br />

The standout 14s had outstanding wins up at<br />

Barker. Still struggling with injuries, the boys<br />

showed great character to totally dominate. A’s<br />

were clinical with a 48-5 victory while the E’s<br />

racked up 50 points in a fine display. Excellent<br />

work by all players and coaches!<br />

The 15s is traditionally a difficult age group<br />

against this opposition and the D’s, C’s and B’s<br />

were outclassed. The A’s however, kept up their<br />

unbeaten run in CAS by winning 33-20. The boys<br />

are relating well to the coaching of Mr. McBride and<br />

their commitment to training is reaping rewards.<br />

The Opens promised to be tough as Barker<br />

had defeated Knox in all games for the first<br />

time in memory and have real depth. 5th’s<br />

were disappointing with a number of unsavoury<br />

incidents spoiling the game. 4ths, however,<br />

gained a stirring victory 26-12. 3rds went down<br />

and 2nds gained their second victory by downing<br />

their previously unbeaten opposition 12-7.<br />

The 1sts knew they were in for a tough day trying<br />

to emulate the feat of the 2007 side who gained a<br />

famous victory at Queens Park on the way to an<br />

undefeated CAS season.<br />

Our guest speaker on Saturday was Captain of<br />

that particular side, Tom Wallace, who spoke of<br />

the reverence he holds for the ‘Double V’ and of<br />

fond memories at QP. Our boys, however, were<br />

not able to respond to the challenge set down by<br />

the visitors who used their size and speed to great<br />

advantage. Barker rolled two lineouts from 25m to<br />

score two converted tries running with the breeze<br />

to lead 14-0 at halftime. <strong>Waverley</strong> were not able to<br />

put a dent in the Barker defensive line who played<br />

with great intensity and purpose. Barker crossed<br />

the line early in the second half and the game<br />

seemed over. To <strong>Waverley</strong>’s credit, they kept<br />

trying to find holes in the defence and a converted<br />

try with 15 minutes to go gave hope to the home<br />

supporters. Unfortunately, Barker’s defence held<br />

strong at the Waves went down 21-7. Outplayed<br />

on the day but unbowed – <strong>Waverley</strong> still believe<br />

the CAS title is up for grabs as all sides are<br />

capable of winning on any given Saturday.<br />

This week we are away at St. Aloysius which<br />

promises to be yet another weekend of tough,<br />

uncompromising rugby. Good luck to all teams.<br />

Thanks again to the Rugby Supporters Club who<br />

work wonders on a Saturday at Queens Park. As<br />

usual for ‘away’ games we need volunteers from<br />

the 14’s and 15’s parents to assist. If you can<br />

spare some time, it would be gratefully accepted.<br />
