studio course: a Professional Concerns Course (APFC 420), a Digital<br />

Modeling/Graphic Skills course (ADGM 410), an Integrated Technologies<br />

course (ATCS 420) and a Case Studies/Analysis Course (AHST 420). With<br />

this approach students are granted a comprehensive view of the variable<br />

components that go into the process of designing architecture.<br />

Additional opportunities are included in the ATCS 332 Studio in the Woods<br />

course (Professor Eean McNaughton) and the GREENbuild Thesis Studio,<br />

under the direction of Professor Coleman Coker (DSGN 510/520).<br />

29. Architect's Administrative Roles<br />

Understanding of obtaining commissions and negotiating contracts,<br />

managing personnel and selecting consultants, recommending project<br />

delivery methods and forms of service contracts.<br />

DSGN 320.<br />

In addition, <strong>Architecture</strong> and Social Engagement (APFC 630) and<br />

<strong>Architecture</strong> and the Underserved (APFC 433) both focus architect’s<br />

administrative roles.<br />

30. Architectural Practice<br />

Understanding of the basic principles and legal aspects of practice<br />

organization, financial management, business planning, time and project<br />

management, risk migration, and mediation and arbitration as well as an<br />

understanding of trends that affect practice, such as globalization,<br />

outsourcing, project delivery, expanding practice settings, diversity and<br />

others.<br />

The bulk of this material is covered in the first Professional Concerns<br />

required course, APFC 410 and is reinforced in the second course, APFC<br />

420. This material is also covered in several other required elective<br />

courses, including Professor McNaughton’s Studio in the Woods course<br />

(ATCS 332), which is linked to APFC 332. Professor Byron Mouton’s<br />

URBANbuild microscale (DSGN 410/420) and Professor Coleman Coker’s<br />

GREENbuild design studio (DSGN 510/520) also deal with the issues<br />

surrounding architectural practice.<br />
