Strengths<br />

The School of <strong>Architecture</strong> has many exceptional qualities and strengths that must be<br />

maintained as the program seeks to increase enrollment and achieve national<br />

distinction:<br />

● Location of school within post-Katrina environment<br />

● Correspondence between the School of <strong>Architecture</strong>'s curriculum and the<br />

education modifications sought by the <strong>Tulane</strong> Renewal Plan, in particular as it<br />

responds to Service Leaning opportunities, a liberal arts foundation and the<br />

initiation of a capstone experience across the <strong>University</strong><br />

● High student academic quality<br />

● High faculty teaching quality<br />

● Positive and productive faculty-student relationships<br />

● High degree of student involvement in the life of the school<br />

● Location within a highly-respected research university<br />

● Location within a highly diverse urban area<br />

● Regional relationships with Latin American and Caribbean regions<br />

● Ongoing series of special events that attract students and local<br />

professionals, and act as added educational forums, a high degree of which will now<br />

involve historic opportunities for the discipline and professional in the post- Katrina<br />

environment<br />

Weaknesses<br />

The School of <strong>Architecture</strong> must aggressively attack several weaknesses in order to<br />

increase enrollment and achieve national distinction. They are:<br />

● Insufficient financial resources related to difficult fundraising environment<br />

(see "Architectural Education," above)<br />

● High tuition as compared to other institutions that house Schools of<br />

<strong>Architecture</strong><br />

● Lack of entrepreneurial 'spirit' on the part of the faculty<br />

● Small staff size relative to aspirations for development<br />

● Small student body<br />

● Poor physical facilities<br />

● Inadequate information, digital, material and media technologies<br />

● Weak graduate programs<br />

● Underperformance in the area of national distinction and reputation<br />

● Low faculty and staff salaries<br />

● Location within a city that has an overwhelmingly poor and<br />

undereducated population<br />

● Modest faculty research and practice productivity<br />

● Relative lack of funding for graduate programs<br />

● Lack of diversity among members of the faculty and student body, in<br />

particular given the population of the city and region<br />

The School of <strong>Architecture</strong> has a variety of opportunities to increase enrollment and<br />

achieve national distinction. They are:
