A wide range of academic scholarships are available to both graduate and<br />

undergraduate students. The endowed Lawrence Research Fellowship, the<br />

Dean's Travel Scholarship, the Class of 1973 Traveling Fellowship, and the<br />

Goldstein Traveling Fellowship supports student travel. The School and the<br />

<strong>University</strong> are committed to providing ready financial access for qualified<br />

students. More detailed information may be found in the section of this<br />

report on “Financial Resources.”<br />

There are several awards internal to the School of <strong>Architecture</strong> awarded at<br />

commencement. These awards include:<br />

The Alpha Rho Chi Medal is awarded by this national fraternity each year<br />

to a graduating student on the basis of leadership; service to the School,<br />

and professional promise as indicated by the student’s attitude and<br />

personality. The faculty selects the student.<br />

The American Institute of Architects/AIA Foundation Scholarship<br />

<strong>Program</strong> awards the American Institute of Architects Medal to the<br />

Bachelor of <strong>Architecture</strong> and a Master of <strong>Architecture</strong> I graduating<br />

student for the highest overall academic achievement, as evidenced by<br />

grade point average. A certificate is given to the recipient as well as the<br />

runner-up.<br />

The faculty of the School presents the John William Lawrence Memorial<br />

medal to a thesis student for design excellence. This award was<br />

instituted in 1971 to honor the school’s former dean.<br />

The Thesis Design Directors award the Faculty Thesis Award. The Award<br />

was instituted in 1991 in memory of Ronald F. Katz, ’63. It is awarded for<br />

outstanding personal growth through thorough ad careful development of<br />

a provocative thesis idea.<br />

The Nathaniel Cortlandt Curtis Memorial Prize is awarded to an<br />

outstanding essay relating to the theory or history of architecture.<br />

The Moise H. and Lois G. Goldstein Memorial Prize for freehand drawing<br />

is awarded annually. The faculty selects the recipient.<br />

The Samuel Stanhope Labouisse Memorial Prize for Research in<br />

Historic Louisiana <strong>Architecture</strong> is awarded to a First or Second Year<br />

student of the most complete description, through measured drawings, of<br />

any building in Louisiana.<br />

The Thomas J. Lupo Award is awarded annually to a student or class for<br />

excellence in metropolitan studies.<br />

In addition, the Associate Dean of the School of <strong>Architecture</strong> acts as the<br />

internal “clearinghouse” for external scholarships and grants awards<br />

including those specific to internship opportunities. Students have also<br />

received AIA/AAF Scholarships, National Association of Women in<br />

Construction Grants and various other fellowships and grants from<br />

professional organizations across the discipline and practice of<br />

architecture.
