EDITO A mission: serving our customers
INNOVATIONS
This concerns us all, whether we are customers or suppliers …
The economy is currently experiencing a gradual expansion,
which, one way or another, has an impact on all businesses.
It is high time, you might say.
The time for grievances is over, a new era has begun …
However, it seems obvious that this economic upturn alone will
not bear the expected fruit. Above all we must do our best in
order to achieve a positive result, not only for our company but also
for our customers and partners.
Here at Faymonville, we jumped at the opportunity and the result
is very satisfactory. Our motivation went beyond the development
of our business, we also wished to reaffirm our primary mission:
serving our customers.
However, we are repeatedly confronted with new challenges, particularly
the crisis in the steel industry.
The price of this highly important metal from our point of view
has increased and remains on an ascending curve. A few months
ago this parameter was not a current issue, but now that we need
to contend with it, we do not give in, and endeavour to stay true to
our philosophy in order to confine to a minimum the repercussions
to our customers.
All the investments dedicated to state-of-the-art equipment help
us design products that are truly examples of innovation and
quality. At our new production plant located in the Grand Duchy
of Luxembourg, which has been in operation for about a year,
we have already reached a turnover that was targeted for 2007
at the earliest.
This is an even greater motivation for us to invest in new equipment
in order to increase our capacity. Not only has the Büllingen site
granted investments for production facilities and machinery, but also
for a brand new training centre, which is due to open at the end
of this year. It will accommodate those customers and drivers,
who wish to familiarise themselves with Faymonville equipment.
Your satisfaction is our success.
Alain Faymonville
General Manager
The very versati
Innovating is a daily concern at
Faymonville (see Box). These innovations
are often the result of a requirement for a
tailor-made solution, an approach totally
mastered by the Belgian Group.
The following ingenious modifications
made to the Megamax demonstrate
this quality.
Dries Holtrop (Holtrop v.d. Vlist) : “The semi-trailer is exactly what we had in mind: easy to
use, high loading capacity (particularly in Germany thanks to the Twin-Axle system), and
suitable for the transport of tower cranes thanks to a thinner gooseneck.”
le Mega
The Megamax is frequently submitted to Faymonville
engineers for modifications. This was again the case
recently, with three designs deserving our attention.
Hydro-shift bed
The first of these developments relates to the
Mega Z1+5, which features a lowbed with
gooseneck, and can be – here’s the innovation –
hydraulically widened from 2.75 m to 3.85 m,
whereas a traditional model requires handling the
manual bed expanders to achieve an extension of
255 mm on each side.
This bed, named “Hydro-shift”, provides a great
deal of advantages. It ensures safe loading, since
the fore ramps widen with the bed, substantial
time saving, as handling of the expanders is
hence avoided, enhanced stability and a higher
degree of flexibility thanks to a continuouslyadaptable
width. Worth mentioning also is the
fact that the whole width can be used, since the
extension is also included in the expansion.
With this solution, Faymonville caters for
companies, which transport wider equipment with
a design that does not allow “straddling” when
loading, and which require a high level of
stability during transport.
This semi-trailer was mainly designed for haulage
companies, which carry loads over short
distances and need to load and unload on a
frequent basis, as this system saves time by
eliminating the need to fit and remove the
expanders.
A unique solution on the haulage market for civil
engineering equipment, which is fully justified in
Thanks to the Hydro-shift bed, the semitrailer
can be hydraulically widened from
2.75 to 3.85 m.
combining an 8x4 tractor, free swing dolly and
5-axle Megamax. This semi-trailer was designed
for the haulage firm, Jan Coesens Transport de
Geeraardsbergen (B).
Twin axle,
always second to none
With this other solution designed for the Dutch firm
Holtrop V.D. Vlist in Assen (NL), Faymonville started
from a 5-axle Mega. The customer was seeking
to have at its disposal an important payload,
without having to invest in modular systems however.
As a result, Faymonville adapted the gooseneck of
its Megamax to the 5-axle tractors of the Dutch
company. With the tare of the semi-trailer at
25 tonnes, this allows the firm to legally load
65 tonnes in Germany (a solution granted for movements
between the Netherlands and Germany).
The advantage of the solution is that it can load
INNOVATION TO THE MAX
A decade of innovations
• 1994 : Variomax – Modular lowbed
semi-trailers, combining typical axles in the
rear and a swing-axle bogie in the front
• 1995 : Twin-Axle – half axle with
independent suspension, mainly designed
to give the Variomax the same advantages
as those offered by a system with
modular axles
• 1996 : light removable gooseneck
• 1997 : ISO 9001 Certification
• 1999 : introduction of Demand Flow
Technology (DFT) production method
• 1999 : automatic shot-blasting
• 2000 : SNT Multimax gooseneck
• 2001 : Air Push / Meca Push –
Fastening system for the transport of glass
• 2001 : Telemax with interchangeable
axles between two semi-trailers
• 2002 : the aerodynamics of the
Floatmax
• 2002 : introduction of zinc chromat
surface treatment
• 2003 : removable SNT gooseneck
on Megamax
• 2003 : Timbermax AA with 2-axle
directional bogie for maximum stability
on dirt roads
3
4
12 tonnes per axle instead of 10 thanks to Faymonville’s
Twin axle, which is cheaper to purchase
and maintain than traditional swing axles. In any
case, this system has convinced Holtrop, since the
Dutch company has also ordered 3-axle semitrailers
equipped with the Twin axle.
More compact, and lighter
Faymonville now offers a “light” version of its 2-axle
Mega, the range’s best-seller. The aim was to achieve
a compact, very low product, featuring an optimised
loading platform whilst observing the legal limitations
in terms of length, i.e. 16.5 m. With the new design,
valuable centimetres can be secured at various
levels. For instance, the thickness of the gooseneck
has thus decreased from 680 to 400 mm, the
turning circle from 2,350 to 2,100 mm,
and the length of the rear axles from 3,200 to
2,800 mm. As a result, the length of the loading platform
increases from 5,700 to 6,850 mm. All these
centimetres gained are multiplied in the case of simple
or double extendable semi-trailers. Another visible
gain concerns loading height, which is reduced from
450 to 300 mm (for the simple extendable loading
platform).
The importance of the new gooseneck deserves to be
mentioned here. It is based on Screw Neck Technology
(SNT), and includes external beams and hooks to
facilitate loading. This system also offers higher
adaptability to the lengths required by the customer’s
The 2-axle Mega is now available in a more compact version,
whilst optimising the loading bed.
INNOVATION TO THE MAX
equipment. In addition, this new configuration is suitable
for the transport of 40’ container on the extended
lowbed, whilst remaining within the 16.5 m limit in
a non-extended state, which was impossible in the
traditional version. It is available with a double extension
and removable deck (for the transport of vessels
and boats for instance).
In the last ten years,
continuous development
regarding:
• the full range in “high-yield
stress steel”
• design of the compact hydraulic
control unit for auxiliary steering
• maintenance-free oscillating
ring for removable and hydraulic
goosenecks
• evolution in the transport of
rail vehicles with our Multimax
semi-trailers
• adjustable steering accelerator
in the gooseneck
• and, of course, we always strive
to increase load lengths and reduce
the heights of the lowbeds
Tele-Z3LAAAX
It all started, as is often the case, with the specific
requirements of a customer. In this case,
the customer was the German firm Gutmann
G. Spedition, which specialises in the transport
of long cargo, in this instance the blades of
wind turbines, which may measure up to 65 m
in length. The customer’s concern was to be
able to transport these components, whilst
complying with the regulations for maximum
authorised payload in Germany and in
France, which is 40 tonnes for divisible parts.
The solution developed by Faymonville was
to build a semi-trailer, i.e. a Telemax, equipped
with 3 axles, but with the option of removing
one axle, thus reducing the weight of the vehicle.
Where necessary, the removed axle may
be added to a second semi-trailer of the same
PRODUCT TO THE MAX
The semi “transformist”
Take two semi-trailers, each
with three axles and,
depending on the
assignments, remove one
axle from one semi-trailer
and add it to the other. Such
is the original solution that
Faymonville developed for a
German customer, who
needed to gain weight in
order to carry wind turbine
components. More details
below.
The Tele- Z3LAAAX
in short
• length :
triple extendable to 46.8 m
• height : 1,230 mm
• width : 2,550 mm
• coupling height : 1,020 mm
type in order to obtain a 4-axle vehicle. The
result is a vehicle in compliance with regulations,
whilst allowing the haulage firm to
increase the loading capacity.
In the twinkling of an eye
Modifying a 3-axle semi-trailer into a 2-axle,
and that is also the beauty of the Faymonville
solution, can be carried out in record time,
thanks to the bolting system. It takes less than
30 minutes to complete the transformation,
whether the axle is being removed or added.
This semi “transformist” is suitable for combining
with a 6x2, 4x2, 6x4 tractor with a
lowbed hitching system (1,020 mm in this
instance).
Mario Gutmann from Gutmann G. Spedition:
“We were looking for a very specific vehicle
for our activities, and this is what Faymonville
has grasped extremely well. The potential uses
are incredible!”
Sales Manager for Spain, Juan Manchado
“2004 starts with
a bang”
Now established in Spain for almost 4 years, Faymonville
is building up, day in day out, a reputation that will soon be
on a par with the one it enjoys in the North of Europe.
Sales Manager for Spain, Juan Manchado, is one
of the architects of this success.
The Spanish market has been experiencing growth
in exceptional transport in the past few years,
as Juan Manchado verifies: “The market for
exceptional transport is growing, and the outlook
is very good for now, in particular in the very
specialised area of the transport of wind turbine
components. The needs for specialised vehicles
are multiplying.”
In this setting, the role of Faymonville as a player
is growing. According to Juan Manchado:
“In the first four months of 2004, we sold as many
vehicles as in the first six months of 2003. This is
due to the fact that Faymonville’s reputation is
expanding and that we offer innovative or
different products. Faymonville surpasses its competitors
when it comes to solutions.”
The Spanish firm Transgranollers is one of the major companies specialised
in exceptional transport ... and of Faymonville’s faithful customers.
A significant potential
Even though Faymonville is finding a place under
the Spanish sun, the potential for development is
still significant: “The major companies specialising
in exceptional transport know Faymonville,
but there is a vast number of small transport firms
that, also, have specific needs. They too must
benefit from our expertise.”
To reach this group, a specific communication will
be gradually put into place. It has already begun
with advertising campaigns in specialised publications
and the mailing of press releases. Attendance
at the major domestic trade fairs is also on
the cards.
As regards infrastructure, Faymonville’s visibility
in Spain is the responsibility of the firm
COA TRUCKS, which is based in Lleida, and deals
with vehicle approval, delivery, after-sales
service, and 24-h assistance for spare parts and
warranties. Worth mentioning is the fact that this
distributor has just launched a new repair facility
for Faymonville products.
Last but not least, the whole range of Faymonville
products is available to the Spanish market, and the
Telemax (due to the transport of wind turbines),
Megamax and Multimax are the most popular
models.
Bauma 2004
Increasing success
Bauma is really THE meeting point for anything relating to
construction. Everything there is on a huge scale: the products
exhibited, the exhibit areas, and the number of visitors.
Faymonville did not miss this very ... interesting appointment.
Bauma 2004 : a success definitively
worth the investment.
To attend Bauma for a constructor of equipment
designed for exceptional transport is somewhat
comparable to being in Cannes for a filmmaker.
It’s an international showcase, a unique opportunity
to exhibit one’s expertise. The reward is not a
“Palme d’or” award, but contacts that are
worth their weight in gold. Arnold Luxen,
Sales manager: “Bauma is an excellent fair, which
is internationally renowned and attracts more visitors
each time. We have established interesting
contacts, with eastern companies in particular,
recorded a great deal of requests and concluded
many sales agreements. This success was definitively
worth the investment.”
It must be Belgian!
Another important trade fair: Transpotec in Verona.
Once more, Faymonville secured some interesting
contacts in a market, which has evolved positively
for the Belgian constructor. Faymonville has
been active on the Italian market for two years
and already boasts a reputation of competence,
which was confirmed during the Transpotec show.
According to Arnold Luxen: “The Italians are surprised
at the level of Belgian quality. They discover
innovative solutions, a know-how and quality
of finish on the equipment that are second to
none.”
With the Air-Push system launched
three years ago, Faymonville had
brought about a significant innovation
to the transport of glass.
The system in question was a
