Disseminated Intravascular<br />

Coagulation<br />

• Skin lesions may be the initial manifestation<br />

• Wide spread petechiae, ecchymoses, ischemic<br />

necrosis of the skin, <strong>and</strong> hemorrhagic bullae<br />

• <strong>Purpura</strong> fulminans may supervene <strong>and</strong><br />

progress to symetrical gangrene<br />

• DIC results from unregulated intravascular<br />

clotting resulting in depletion of clotting factors<br />

<strong>and</strong> bleeding<br />

• The primary treatment is to treat the underlying condition
