3 Sa¤¤à – perception<br />

1 Phassa<br />

Phassa furnishes the contact between the sense object, the sense<br />

organ and the citta. For example, the contact between visual<br />

object, visual organ (eye) and eye-consciousness (cakkhu-vi¤¤àõa)<br />

is accompanied by phassa. Without phassa, there will be no senseimpression<br />

and consequently no cognition.<br />

2 Vedanà<br />

Vedanà enjoys the taste of the sense-object. It is like a king who<br />

enjoys a delicious dish.<br />

Feeling is very important to worldly people. People are<br />

struggling day and night for the enjoyment of sensual pleasure<br />

which is nothing but pleasant feeling.<br />

In the cause-effect relations of the Law of Dependent<br />

Origination (pañicca-samuppada), contact is the condition for the<br />

arising of feelings, and feeling is the condition for the arising of<br />

craving (taõhà).<br />

The whole group of feelings—past, present, future, one’s<br />

own and external—is designated as vedanakkhandha, one of the<br />

five groups of existence.<br />

3 Sa¤¤à<br />

Sa¤¤à takes note of the sense-objects as to colour, form, shape,<br />

name, etc. It functions as memory. It is sa¤¤à that enables one to<br />

recognize an object that has once been perceived by the mind
