and distracted in mind. Moha-måla cittas will arise during this time.<br />

So if we take stock of moral cittas and immoral cittas in a<br />

day, immoral cittas will out-number the moral cittas by many<br />

million times. Since the immoral cittas leave seeds of unwholesome<br />

kamma which will bring about unfavourable results and<br />

unhappy destiny or rebirth, it is unwise to let the mind take its<br />

course freely.<br />

When we can differentiate the moral cittas from the immoral<br />

cittas, we can control them towards our own benefits.<br />

Ahetuka Cittas (Rootless Consciousness)<br />

Hetu : måla: cause or root-condition<br />

Akusala-hetu : unwholesome roots (lobha, dosa, moha)<br />

Kusala-hetu : wholesome roots (alobha, adosa, amoha)<br />

Consciousness without concomitant root-conditions is<br />

known as ahetuka citta whereas consciousness with concomitant<br />

root-conditions is called sahetuka citta.<br />

There are 18 ahetuka cittas. They may be classified into three<br />

groups as follows:<br />

1 Akusala-vipàka cittas<br />

unwholesome resultant cittas that arise as the inevitable<br />

results of akusala cittas – 7<br />

2 Ahetuka kusala vipàka cittas<br />

wholesome and rootless resultant cittas that arise as the<br />

inevitable results of kusala cittas – 8<br />

3 Ahetuka kiriya cittas<br />

rootless functional consciousness – 3<br />
