Udayabbaya-¤àõa<br />

After attaining the Purity of Vision discerning the Path<br />

and not-Path, the yogi earnestly undertakes the<br />

vipassanà-meditation again, meditating on the three<br />

characteristic marks of existence, with particular<br />

attention to the arising phenomena and the dissolving<br />

of the conditioned things. Gradually the yogi’s<br />

Udayabbaya-¤àõa becomes matured.<br />

Bhaïga-¤àõa<br />

As the insight knowledge of the yogi gradually<br />

developed, the yogi is able to note the arising and<br />

passing away of nàma and råpa more and more quickly.<br />

Since nàma and råpa are arising and passing away at a<br />

tremendous rate of many billions per second, no yogi<br />

would be able to observe all cittas and cetasikas as they<br />

arise and perish. Even when he can note along fairly<br />

quickly, he will not observe the arising phenomena any<br />

more; all he observes is only the dissolving phenomena.<br />

Whatever he looks at, he observes the dissolution of<br />

conditioned things.<br />

The knowledge that observes the incessant dissolution<br />

of the ultimate nàma and råpa is called Bhaïga<br />

¤àõa. If the yogi can observe the dissolving instant of<br />

the Bhaïga ¤àõa, that investigates the dissolving instant<br />

of a conditioned thing, with a subsequent Bhaïga ¤àõa,<br />

then his Bhaïga-¤àõa is said to reach its culmination.<br />

Bhaya-¤àõa<br />

When the yogi observes the incessant dissolution of the<br />

conditioned things continuously, he realizes the fearful
